Microsoft Unveils Windows Phone 8

Microsoft Corporation India Pvt. Ltd. today announced the launch of Windows Phone 8, the latest version of the company’s smartphone operating system. Windows Phone 8 offers a truly personal phone experience, connecting you to the people and things that matter most.

As part of the announcement, Microsoft revealed new features, including Kid’s Corner and Rooms, along with details of a range of beautiful new smartphones from Nokia, Samsung and HTC, each with their own differentiated designs, colors and features. Starting with the Windows Phone 8X by HTC, Windows Phone 8 devices will go on sale in India starting November.

“We can’t wait for consumers to meet Windows Phone 8, the most personal smartphone there is,” said Mr. Bhaskar Pramanik, Chairman, Microsoft Corporation India Pvt. Ltd. “A range of stunning, colorful and unique Windows Phone devices are coming to India starting November.”

Most Personal Smartphone

Live Tiles are the heart and soul of Windows Phone, and no other phone has them. People can arrange the iconic Start screen however they want by pinning their favorite people, apps, music, games, photos and more. Three sizes of Live Tiles and 20 bright color choices including cobalt, crimson and lime mean you can personalize your Start screen to be unmistakably yours.

In addition to Live Tiles, Windows Phone 8 offers a range of new features to make your smartphone experience even more personal, including these:

  • ·         The only phone with Live Apps. Live Apps bring information right to the Start screen, such as the Groupon deal of the day, flight information and news headlines. With Windows Phone 8, Live Appssuch as Facebook can even deliver real-time information right to your lock screen with updated wallpaper.
  • ·         Top apps. The Windows Phone Store has 120,000 apps to choose from, with hundreds added every day and hits coming soon such as Angry Birds Star Wars, Cut the Rope Experiments, Disney’s Where’s My Water, LivingSocial, Temple Run, Urbanspoon and many more.
  • ·         Kid’s Corner. Exclusive to Windows Phone 8, Kid’s Corner is a worry-free way to share your phone with your kids, so they can play Angry Birds without texting your angry boss. Parents can now hand over their phones to the kids without worrying about deleted photos, misdirected emails, unapproved purchases or accidental phone calls. After a simple setup, parents can activate a specialized place on the phone for kids to play — complete with their own customizable Start screens — where they can access only the apps, games, music and videos picked by parents.
  • ·         Rooms. Sometimes you want to share and chat with one group, not your entire social network. Rooms allow you to create private groups of people who have Windows Phone 8 —like your family members, best friends or fantasy football league—and easily connect with just them. Chat, share calendars, shopping lists or photos in an ongoing conversation where only those invited can join in. You can share some aspects of Rooms with friends and family on other smartphones as well.
  • ·         Wallet and near-field communications.Windows Phone 8 brings together the best of new wallet technologies, including payments via near-field communications (NFC).1The Wallet can also store your debit, credit, loyalty and membership card information on your phone.
  • ·         Always-on, premium Skype experience. With the new Skype app, coming soon to Windows Phone 8, you can make and receive Skype calls just like a regular phone call. Simply tap a friend or family member’s contact card in the People Hub, or just pick up when the phone rings. Skype is always on and available so you can choose how to connect with people.

Stunning Phones

Leading up to today’s launch, Nokia, Samsung and HTChave announced an array of phones for Windows Phone 8, featuring large, vivid screens, new camera innovations, NFC capabilities, and bold colors such as red, yellow, blue, black and white. Each phone offers unique features and comes in a variety of price points.

  • ·         Nokia. The Nokia Lumia 920 offers state-of-the-art photography that fits in your pocket, and it is the world’s only smartphone to include Optical Image Stabilization. The Nokia Lumia 820 offers a ClearBlack display and removable back exchangeable shells in a range of vibrant colors.2Both the Nokia Lumia 920 and 820 offer wireless charging.
  • ·         HTC.The Windows Phone 8X by HTC was designed with sleek lines and radiant colorsto match Windows Phone’s newLive Tiles. The 8X and its smaller sibling, the 8S, both boast a killer music experience with Beats Audio and exclusive built-in ampsthat pair perfectly with Xbox Music.
  • ·         Samsung. The Samsung ATIV S brings the biggest screen to Windows Phone, with a bright 4.8-inch touchscreen and large battery for extended battery life. Wrapped in brushed aluminum, the ATIV S balances high-end materials and technology with a hairline design and light weight. The ATIV Odyssey was announced today as the latest Windows Phone from Samsung with more details to come.

11 Reasons Why I love My Mac and Why You Should Too

Before I start confessing my love for the Mac, let me first admit something. Yes, I am a devoted Apple fan and take a lot of pride in it. I love a Mac because I daresay, it is a far better design and helps me perform all my tasks more efficiently.

Why I love My Mac

I switched to a Mac less than two years ago. So, that leaves me with around ten years of PC experience. Having said that, I know now my readers will give me a little extra credibility for whatever I write next.

Why I love my Mac So Much?

The Design & Form Factor

The best part about an Apple product is that the software and the hardware are both manufactured by the same people. Everyone knows how advantageous that is. Almost zero incompatibility issues with the hardware. Even when you upgrade your Operating System.

Next, I’ll speak of the form factor. This is my favorite part. The Apple devices are like a minimalist’s dream come true. Ever since the unibody Macbooks came into existence I’ve been in the awe of it. It was last year that I got my first unibody Macbook Pro(MBP).

The Design & Form Factor

Best in Class Hardware

I loved the way Apple used to classify the previous generation MacBooks as ones “designed to match standards which don’t even exist yet.” It’s true. Macbooks are not luxuries, and They are essentials. Try the MultiTouch trackpad and I swear it will blow you away. The glass trackpad remains pristine forever, and the added gestures on multitouch make it all the more classier.

The Operating System

Another favorite part of mine. I don’t hate Windows. But sorry I can’t ever love it. Bill Gates, himself once admitted in a Fortune Magazine interview as to how fanatic Steve Jobs has been about the User Interface(UI). The OS X El Captain experience is something you are missing out on in case you do not own an Apple Computer.

os-x-el-capitan

Let’s illustrate this further. The UI on Leopard is far more superior and intuitive than Windows. The learning curve for any normal user is faster on the former. Most of the newer UI elements on Windows have been borrowed extensively from Apple’s OS. Moreover, even my Mom can use it. That’s one hell of a UI test. Jokes apart, lets look at the framework. Why to bother a layman with the fear of spyware and malware. There is no registry on Mac and hence half the trouble reduced. Any serious tweak on the Mac will require authorisation from the user.

Gone are the days when the number of Software packages for the Mac were limited. Today, you have the best of them available to you in both worlds making the switch to Leopard all the easier.

Mac Works Out of the Box

This is a very important factor as well. You know when you first run your PC you cannot view any of the PDF or DOCS or Quicktime Movies etc. without the need for installing extra software. And I really find that insane. I don’t need the ability to edit files right away but I beg of you, let me at least view them?

The Finder (Explorer’s equivalent on Mac) will let you preview just any file without opening it in any application. You need to look into any file at all, just press the Spacebar on your keyboard. You will have a preview of the file open up. Press the Spacebar again and it goes away. You did not have to open an application just to take a quick look at the file. For instance, you need to look at the date and sender’s name inside three PDF files on your desktop. You don’t have to Open each file. Just quickly preview each. It’s efficient. You save time as well as energy. And all of us need to.

The System won’t Crash on Yo

In the past, one year on my new MBP, not once has the system crashed on me. The machine will ALWAYS be responsive. A Mac user, ordinarily, doesn’t know what is it like when the system hangs. The worst scenario I’ve had is that a browser goes unresponsive. When Firefox stops responding, I leave it as it is and fire up Safari. And Finder sucks way less than Explorer. This is Windows XP Explorer I’m talking about. The one on Windows 7 might have learned a few lessons.

Spotlight Search

All your files on the Mac will be indexed and ready for searching. Whenever you need something, just press Command + Space and type. Be it calculating 54*37 or the definition of “Histrionic” or the name of a file or the contents of a document you remember. Just type it and you’ll have results in less than a second. So no matter how cluttered your hard drive is and where you throw your files, they will always be available to you only a Spotlight Search away.

More out of the Box Love

All the basic things that you will need to do, you will have a tool available on the Mac. Like I said you will not need to install anything on the first day itself. Do You want to take a screenshot, my blogger friend? Press Command + Shift + 3. You don’t want the full screen but only a part press Command + Shift + 4. The pictures will be ready for you right on your desktop.

Multiple Desktops

You need multiple desktops. No problem. Spaces to the rescue. As you can see in this screenshot, I’ve been composing this blog post in the top left screen, browsing Apple wallpapers in the next. When I run out of ideas I can take a break and just return to watching the TV show in the third screen. Easy Right?

Customer Support

If you have used any Apple hardware you’ll know how much you love their Support. No matter how bad your problem is, you’ll have a qualified person to speak to who’ll understand exactly what you are talking about. PC users, face it. You never had this advantage. This is the reason Apple rates highest in consumer satisfaction.  Apple emerged victorious in JD Power survey for the same.

The list of outstanding features just goes on and on. I’ll keep sharing more of  Mac love for the forthcoming posts. Let’s switch perspective now. What does PC still have then? And why their sales? I could instantly, think of the following two points.

Cons of Mac Book and Apple computer:

Cost Factor

I do agree. PCs are on an average cheaper than Apple computer. Yes, significantly cheaper. For the price of an entry-level Apple computer you can get a way advanced PC. This is one of the advantages that PCs have for themselves. Apple fans however will let a hole in their wallets. I want the best product and I will pay whatever it takes.

Options and Customizations

Again PC users have a greater advantage here. But the point is what do we really need it. The professionals apart, lets talk about the normal user. He doesn’t need many options. Why put him in the dilemma to decide if he wants/needs a Bluray or Dual Layer DVD drive. Apple gives you a lesser number of options and no sub standard configurations. You will not get a computer with 1GB of RAM from them no matter how badly you want it.

PC and MAC

All you PC lovers. I’m your culprit. Feel free to hit me as much as you like. I won’t disapprove your comment no matter how much Apple hatred you show. 😛 And the one-millionth a dollar question. Are you a PC or a MAC?

Android Notifier : Get Android Notifications on Desktop

Suppose you’re away from your phone, playing a game or working in front of your PC and you get an important call or a text from your close ones, you wouldn’t want to miss it right? During circumstances like this, wouldn’t it be useful if you received the notifications on your desktop, let it be a call or a text. If you’re an Android user, we’ve got a free app for you that will do all the exchanging of notifications between your phone and the desktop PC for you. It’s called Android Notifier or Remote Notifier, both are the same.

Android Notifier

Use Android Notifier for Getting Notification on Windows Desktop:

Android Notifier is a free app that helps you receive your SMS, Call and Battery notifications on your desktop PC over WiFi or Bluetooth. You install the app on your mobile device, then you download a corresponding app for your Mac, Windows or Linux PC. There is a little bit of setting up to do, but that does not involve any head explosions. All you have to do is set up an active link between your Android phone and the PC over a WiFi connection or Bluetooth.

Once the desktop application is installed, you’ll need run it and give in certain details on what notifications to get and how. It’s pretty easy, like I said before. Remember, you should already have the Android notifier app installed on your mobile and it should be on the same WiFi network as your PC. Reboot your PC and the mobile device and check the option to Start the service at boot.

Now, you should be able to get all your SMS, Call and Battery notifications right on your Desktop in a popup window. If you have Growl installed on your Mac or Windows, then you can select Growl to display these notifications. The best thing about this app is that it’s available on Mac, Windows and Linux, is easy to setup and works like a charm. Only problem, it doesn’t tell you the contact name, just displays the number, so if you’re bad at remembering phone numbers, then this isn’t a very good idea for you.

You can download the Android app and Desktop app for Android Notifier from here. Try this out and see how it works for you.

How To Burn .dmg Files in Windows OS

How many times you have ended up downloading a .dmg file extension on your Windows PC and wondering what is this extension and how you can open it.

.dmg Files are associated with Mac OS. If you have never used Mac, .dmg is a virtual disk image, and can be opened in Mac os. In short it’s image disk within image disk and Mac uses it to ensure better security as executable files like .exe can easily be targeted by hackers to inject malicious codes.

Though, in Mac OS, you will not face any issue with opening .dmg file unless its corrupted but in Windows, there is no default handler for opening .dmg files. In this guide we will learn how you can open and burn .dmg files in Windows.

Basically, you needs to Burn a .dmg file in Windows when you want to Install Mac OS X in your Traditional Windows PC. You can  Burn a .dmg Files in Windows whether it is Windows 7 , Windows Vista or any other Version of Windows.

Simply steps to Burn .dmg File in Windows.

  • You need to download Transmac software from CNET Downloads. Here is the download link for Transmac<Link>
  • Install it on your Windows PC
  • Though it’s a paid software, but you can always use fully functional 15 days trial.<Buy Now>
  • When you are installing this Software don’t forget to put a tick mark on ‘Associate Transmac with .dmg Files’. This option will integrate Transmac with .dmg Files, which let you burn the File.
  • Simply Open Transmac from Start Menu or from Desktop Shortcut and now you are ready to burn a .dmg file.

Burn .dmg Files in Windows

  • Click on Tools Option as seen in the picture and then click on ‘Burn CD/DVD Image’ from this Menu.
  • You have to select your DVD Writer Path, Writing Speed and Browse for the .dmg file, you want to Burn.

Burn CD DVD Image

  • After Selecting the above mentioned options, simply click on ‘OK’ Button.
  • Now this will open your .dmg Image File in Transmac Software. Click on Burn option and you are Done.
  • Now you can easily Install Mac OS X and other Apple Software Easily on your Windows Machine. Apart from that you are now able to Burn .dmg files in Windows.

Note- Transmac is a paid software, so for full access you have to buy it. I have bought it around $50 and still using it, without any problem. But you can use it’s Trial for 15 Days. You can also use this Trick to Burn .dmg files in Ubuntu and Linux. Another way is to use MagicISO software and convert .dmg file into .iso version and then mount it using any virtual CD/DVD software.

Here is a video tutorial, which will help you to understand the process better. Though, I suggest to mute your speakers as song might annoy your serious work mode:

I hope this will solve your query but in case if you are stuck anywhere, feel free to ask questions via comments.

Download Windows 8 Beta : Consumer Preview

Microsoft has been working a lot on polishing the developer preview of Windows 8 that it had released last September. In only 24 hours, it was downloaded over 500,000 times. Windows is the most widely used operating system on a computer and with Windows 8, things are going to get a lot better. The company just announced the final version of the Windows 8 beta and has called it the Windows 8 Consumer Preview. I have given Windows 8 beta download link at the end of the article, and in case if you are not interested in knowing what’s new in consumer preview version of Windows 8, you can skip directly to Download windows 8 beta section at the bottom.

Windows 8 consumer preview

Windows 8 Consumer Preview

A lot is new in this consumer preview than the developer preview, a lot of bugs have been taken care of and it’s much more complete with lots of new apps, features etc. The Windows 8 beta also has the new logo for the operating system that the company had chosen few days ago. I’m sure you’ll be dying with excitement to try out the new Windows 8 consumer preview. You can do so by using the official download links at the end of this page. Before that, let me tell you something more about the new consumer preview. How it’s better than the developer preview and how it will make your Windows experience better.

Windows 8 consumer preview apps

Quite honestly, Windows 8 developer preview had a lot of bugs, very less apps and crashed a lot. However, it had some plus points too. Everyone, I believe, loved the new Metro layout that Microsoft has chosen for it’s latest operating system. If you don’t remember, then you can read our review on the Windows 8 developer preview to see what the next OS from Microsoft brings to the table.

So, the Consumer Preview or the final Windows 8 beta, that was released few hours ago has plenty of new features and is almost ready for daily use. I’m going to talk about them in short and try to cover almost all that’s new with the consumer preview. The hardware requirements remain the same and there are two versions, 32bit and 64bit, that you can download and try out. Microsoft has finally gotten rid of the Start button, like it was rumored it would. Instead, the new layout has something called as the ‘Charms’ bar and four corner gestures that take care of all the tasks!

windows 8 consumer preview Charms

The Charms bar pops out from the right hand side of the screen when you point your mouse on the right-bottom or top corner. It has the Start, Search, Share, Devices and Settings buttons. Performing a right click in any app will bring the top and bottom options instead of the old Right-click options. Left bottom corner will bring up the start menu on non-touch devices that can be clicked to view all the apps currently installed. Oh yes, there are numerous new apps with the Consumer preview, so that’s another plus.

The Internet Explorer is still like the one in the developer preview, IE 10 I mean and then you have SkyDrive(Microsoft’s own cloud storage service), X-box Live and again, new apps.

Where to Download Windows 8 Beta:

Windows 8 Consumer Preview downloads

After reading all that, I’m sure you just can’t wait to download windows 8 beta version and try it out on your system. If you’re already running Windows 8 developer preview, then you probably can run this new version (build 8250). Below are the download links for both the 64 bit and 32 bit versions of the latest Windows 8 beta. Both are ISO files, so you’ll need to either burn them to a DVD or mount them on to USB. You can follow our tutorial on how to create a Windows 8 bootable USB and get it done.

  • Download Windows 8 Consumer Preview 64bit
  • Download Windows 8 Consumer Preview  32bit

Once you’re done installing, do let us know what you think of the Windows 8 consumer preview. Check out the official page of the Windows 8 beta to learn more about it and also find out what apps are available.

EaseUS Partition Master : Extend and Merge Hard Disk Partitions

EaseUS Partition MasterAs we install Applications and Games into our Windows system the space gets occupied and one day you may find that your disk partition is almost full and its time to extend the disk partition. I had a similar issue with my system, the C drive was almost full on which Windows was installed and I had to extend the partition. Windows 7 and Windows Vista have a built in Hard Disk management utility with which you can perform basic operations like Shrink and Extend Hard Disk partitions but if you notice it won’t let you extend/resize a partition on which Windows is installed.

While I was searching I found this wonderful tool with you can easily perform operations like resize, extend, merge, copy disk, convert dynamic to basic disk and convert primary to logic partition easily.

To free up space on your drive you may consider uninstalling programs you don’t use, moving large media files to another partition on your hard drive, cleaning temporary and junk files on your system and deleting previous restore points.

How to use EaseUS Partition Master

  • Download EaseUS Partion Manager Home Edition for free by clicking here.

EaseUS Partition Tool

  • [Important]Backup your data to an external Hard Drive. (Note: This is important if anything goes wrong during the process of partition, this never happens usually but it is necessary you backup your data before you proceed.)
  • Open EaseUS Partition Magic and select the disk partition from which you want to add space to your full disk partition. For Eg. : If you are adding space to your C: drive from your D: drive, then select D: drive and click on  “Resize/Move partition”  and move the pointer to the right to Un-allocate memory. Hit “Ok” to save your changes.

Extend Hard drive Partition

  • Now select the drive you want to extend and move the pointer to the right as shown in the image below. (The Un-allocated space will now get added to your selected drive.)For Eg:  You are adding space to your C: drive, select the C: drive and move the pointer to the right.

Extend hard drive

  • Click ok and now a dialogue box will appear asking you to reboot your computer for the changes to take effect, click yes, your computer will restart and EaseUS Partition Master will automatically apply the changes you selected. (Make sure there are no power-cuts when the operation is ongoing, interruption can cause serious damage to your data, the process should complete in a few minutes depending on the amount of data to be moved.)Below is a snap of how the dialogue box which would appear when Windows would reboot of the ongoing operation to give you an idea.EaseUS Partition Tool Snap

Merge Hard Disk Partitions Using EaseUS Partition Master:

Best Windows 8 Transformation Pack for Windows 7

Microsoft released the first Windows 8 developer preview a few weeks ago, and most of us have already tried it. I’ve also written a complete review of all the new features that you’ll find in the developer preview. One of the main reasons that millions of users have already installed and tried the developer preview is the Metro UI based start menu.

However, there are millions more out there of the other kind too, who don’t want to install or try the developer preview because they’re afraid their system may lock up. Some people don’t even know that Microsoft has released an official developer preview that people can actually download for free and try. These people look for other alternatives, such as a Windows 8 transformation pack. And believe me, there are plenty of those, but most of them are always buggy and don’t work as they should. Here’s one that will work and it simulates the Metro UI of Windows 8 pretty well and it’s called Windows 8 UX pack for Windows 7.

This Windows 8 transformation pack brings more than just the Metro UI Start screen. It also adds the Windows 8 font, visual styles, wallpapers, colors etc. It doesn’t modify any system settings, so when you uninstall the pack, your Windows 7 will return to its original looks and feel.

Windows 8 UX Pack will give you Windows 8 UI improvements such as theme and logon screen without touching system files at all so it won’t have such risk to harm your system at all. In this package, you’ll have Windows 8 inspired themes and applications to make your system resembles Windows 8 as much as possible without modifying system files. Give your desktop a visual boost with the Windows 8 UX Pack.

Upon installation, you’ll be asked to choose between a Windows 8 Aero interface or the Windows 8 Lite and from there onward, your start screen will look a lot different. This is one of the best ways to experience Windows 8 on Windows 7, without the need to install the developer preview.

Run Android Apps in Windows with BlueStacks App Player

There are more than 200,000 apps available on the Android market, but it’s not like you can try all of them on your mobile phone can you? Well, what if you could try it on your Windows PC. Yup, you’ve heard of the famous Angry Birds game being made to run on Windows, well the same thing has happened again.

BluesStacks is a Windows software that can run any Android app on your PC in full screen mode, can sync apps from your Android phone to PC and it works really really smooth as well. The software has been under development since almost 6 months now, and yet it’s still in Alpha.

So, don’t panic if apps crash when you’re in an intense gaming situation. The best part, it’s all free. Yes, you can install up to 26 Android apps at once and use them, but not more than that. You’ll have to uninstall and delete a few to add new ones!! That’s a downer, but it won’t be same for long. According to the BlueStacks team;

With 56-percent of smartphone consumers purchasing an Android device in the last three months[1], it’s apparent that Android is rapidly becoming a preferred operating system. The BlueStacks App Player now gives users one-click access to their favorite Android apps right on their Windows PC. Both Windows and Android users stand to benefit greatly from this capability.
