Sony Ericsson Playstation Phone: Xperia Play

The Sony Ericsson’s Playstation phone has been around the internet from quite a while now, a phone that was going to have a slide out gaming keypad instead of a regular QWERTY keyboard.

And yes it’s true, the Playstation dubbed phone from Sony Ericsson will be officially known as the Xperia Play and now there are pictures and videos to prove that it’s official. This will be one of those unique Sony Ericsson phones, which obviously won’t sell as much as a normal smartphone but will be a rare one that people will want to know more about.

So what’s special about this new Xperia, well first of all it’s huge, although it has the same screen size as the Xperia X10, but has some unique features that makes it a gaming device as well. A challenge for the the Nintendo then? Let’s see what the specifications tell ;

  • A 4 inch Capacitive Display with a native resolution of 854 x 480 pixels
  • A 1 GHz Qualcomm processor with the Adreno 205 Image processor for awesome gaming.

  • Internal memory of 315MB with a MicroSD expansion slot, expandable up to 32GB.
  • 5 megapixel camera, no HD recording but HD playback is available
  • A slide out Game Keypad that resembles the Playstation Controller.

The Playstation Pocket App will connect you to the Playstation website from where you’ll be able to download games on to the Xperia Play and enjoy playstation like graphics on the go, you can also make a call or text someone in between. The Pocket App is not yet live as the phone hasn’t officially been launched yet. We’ll keep you informed on the launch date and the pricing etc. Till then enjoy the video review below by ePrice.

The phone will be mostly revealed at the Mobile World Congress next month that’s taking place at Barcelona.

Swype : Text Input Technology for Touch Phone

I find typing on QWERTY phones easier and faster than on touch phones that lack the classic tactile feel. But recently, I have been feeling strongly inclined towards the touch phones primarily because of the revolutionary technology called Swype.
Some of you might have been already using it without even knowing that it’s Swype at work. Just like iPhone has been declared a revolution, I would say Swype has every bit of chance to be declared a revolution soon. Okay, but what is it? You want to know, right?

What is Swype?

Swype is a new patented text input mechanism, introduced by Swype Inc., that allows you to input text in a easier and faster way while using the standard QWERTY keyboard layout of your touchscreen phone. In fact, it is so fast that you could possibly achieve typing speed of 40 words or more per minute which is simply phenomenal.

But why Swype?

  • Innovative, faster and easier way to type text using standard QWERTY layout
  • Offers word suggestions for corrections
  • Learns new words automatically
  • Easy switching to regular keyboard
  • Supports foreign languages
  • Inserts spaces automatically
  • 65,000 words database

How Swype Text input works?

In contrast the way we use the QWERTY keyboard in touch phones, Swype allows you to type words without typing or pressing a single key. When using Swype, you simply need to trace a path across the screen keyboard and Swype does the rest. Is it that simple? Yes, it actually is. And you can use your finger or your phone’s stylus whatever your preference maybe.

The moment you trace a path across the keyboard, Swype’s patented algorithm analyzes the path pattern and immediately recognizes the word you intended to type. For example — if you were to type the word “quick”, you simply need to connect its letters by moving your finger over letter ‘q’ through ‘u’ then ‘i’ followed by ‘c’ and finally stopping at the letter ‘k’ on the keyboard; see a graphical representation of the same below.

Swype

At first, this may sound too time consuming but once you get used to it, it would take merely a second or less in fact. Check out a video demonstration below —

Best of all, you don’t need to be accurate, Swype is quite forgiving and understands completely that to err is human 🙂

So next time when you go shopping for a new touch phone, look for Swype support for sure. Till then, happy typing.

Droid 2 a.k.a Motorola Droid X : Review

The much awaited Motorola Droid X a.k.a Droid 2 is outed and ready for review and other formal announcements about pricing and availability. The android 2.1 powered Droid X will be carried by Verizon like its earlier version. Coming to the package, the Droid X is undoubtedly one of the best Android Smartphone to have in already competitive field with the advent of iPhone 4 and EVO 4G.

Worth Reading: What Will You Prefer iPhone4 or HTC EVO 4G ?

A lot of similarities exist between the earlier droid and this Smartphone but there are lots of good features it has packed additionally within a year that needs a mention. The Smartphone features a 4.4-inch, FWVGA 854 x 480-resolution capacitive screen which again is “OK” if you overlook the ordinary screen resolution.

Droid 2

The new Droid gets some serious attention on improving its multimedia features. The phone has got a new  Blockbuster application, DLNA type app, separate HDMI dock and is loaded with a new MotoBlur kind of skin which helps you shift between various multimedia channels.

The 8-megapixel camera records video at 720p which again is a disappointment to me as HD video recording would correctly befit the big android Smartphone. Finally Droid gets the much needed multi-touch virtual keyboard and it preloads Swype when the keyboard is triggered for action.

Motorola Droid X  got a competitive processor this time around. With 1GHz ARMv7 processor sitting at its heart you must expect a snappy performance. The memory option is just 8GB and that again is a kind of a less in my opinion. The Smartphone also has kind of battery management software to keep your Droid running for long hours before the need to pack juice reappears.

Droid X Review Summary

Overall the new Droid packs a punch in few areas like multimedia and performance but suffers badly when coming to screen resolution and video recording when compared to its competitors. Motorola Droid X would be great competitor to Evo 4G head on but it being the gadget of the year like the one last is a big doubt.

Official announcement of the Droid X

The Droid  will be officially announced on June 23rd and invitations have already sent out. The meeting will be addressed by Google, Adobe, Motorola and Verizon Wireless representatives.
