D Link DWR 131 Hands on And Tata Photon + Config

These days I started travelling a lot and I use a Tata Photon+ data card to connect to Internet. Unfortunately I couldn’t get a Working driver of Tata Photon+ for Mac Lion OS X and I ended up purchasing a D Link DWR 131 Router. It’s a 3G router, which convert your 3G connection into Wi-fi connection and give you the power of portability. This works with almost all the popular Indian 3G card along with Data card like Tata Photon +, MTS, Reliance and many more. I will come to the setup part later but first lets look into some of the features of D Link DWR 131 Router.

D Link DWR 131 Router feature and review:

I’m a big fan of Belkin and D link product when it comes to router and I picked D link 131 router for almost 360o INR ( $70) from a local gadget shop. Though, you can always search it online and get it for much cheaper price and deal.

DWR 131 3G router comes with 1700 mAH battery and offer many feature which you may or may not use. Specially, if you are looking for a cheap and simple solution, there are other cheap options too but if you are looking for something long term and offer more features like Ethernet connection, multiple Wi-fi connectivity and simple to configure Wizard, D link DWR 131 router could be one of the good pick. This 3G router supports multiple network (EV-DO/CDMA/HSPA+/HSUPA/HSDPA/UMTS) and in the accessories it comes with one Charger, Battery, Router and a Lan wire.

Configuring D link 3G router with Tata Photon +:

The reason I ended up buying this router is because of two reason:

  • No Tata Photon + working driver for Mac Lion OS X 10.8.2+
  • Connecting multiple device with same data dongle.

I could have used my Mac book as Wi-fi router but that is not very convenient when you are travelling and you want to preserve battery as much as you could.  By default this router doesn’t work with Tata photon+ but you can manually set it (Which is easy and configure your D link router to work with Tata Photon +. Follow this step by step guide:

  • Switch on your D link DWR 131 Router and put in battery and connect it with Charger.
  • Plug in your Tata Photon + data card
  • Open 192.168.0.1 in your browser
  • Default username: admin Password: Blank
  • Click on Setup > Manual Internet connection Setup

Now in the Ethernet Port select Wan and use Dial up profile as manual.  There are few settings which you need to make and those are easy.

  • Country : India
  • Telecom : Others
  • 3G network: WCDMA/HSPA
  • username: internet
  • password: password
  • Dial number: #777

Click on Save settings and it will reboot the router and you will be connected to internet using your Tata photon + data card. Check out this screenshot for any confusion:

That’s it and now you can enjoy the power of Wi-fi even when you are moving and you can connect to multiple devices at one time. If you are a frequent traveller and have multiple gadgets with you, you should consider buying D link Pocket router or from any other company, not only it will give you piece of mind, but you will also be connected to Internet all the time.

Do let me know if you are stuck anywhere and I will try to find a solution.

Getting started with Belkin N150 Modem-Router With Airtel Broadband connection:

Airtel Broadband settings:

You need to have your broadband login and password. Login is usually your landline number with STD code followed by [email protected] For ex: [email protected]

And your password would be: your account number. Which you can get it from your Airtel broadband bill at the top. You can also get your account number by login into your current Airtel modem by typing: 192.168.1.1 in your web browser field, and try login in with default username and password, i.e:

  • username: admin
  • password: password

If you have forgotten your Airtel modem password, you can try password as your account number which can be retrieved from your Airtel broadband bill.

Apart from this, there are 3 settings which you need to remember:

Now, you can either connect to router from laptop using Wi-Fi or by Lan cable. I simply connected using Lan cable, by default it picked the I.P from DHCP.

Setting up Airtel broadband:

Now, open 192.168.2.1 in your web browser, it will prompt for password, and if you have not changed your Belkin router password, simply hit next.

On the next field, it will ask you to enter the connection type as shown in below image, select PPP0E and click Next:

Enter your Airtel broadband credentials, as I have mentioned above. So your final output would look something like this:

Click on Next/Save and it will restart your router. It might take 60 seconds, so be patient. Once your router is restarted, the light on your modem-router will turn green and it indicates that you are connected to internet.

Alternatively, Airtel also suggest you to add the DNS field manually, though I leave it as default and use Automatically from ISP. Though if you wish to add Airtel DNS, you can add these DNS:

202.56.215.54
202.56.215.55

Airtel DNS
