Samsung Galaxy Beam Smartphone With Built in Projector

This is the second product that Samsung has announced at the Mobile World Congress 2012, we’ve already told you about the first one. This new device is also part of the Galaxy family, but is very different from all of them. Everybody loves a different mobile device, and this one sports a built in projector. The Samsung Galaxy Beam is the first device in the Galaxy lineup that features a built in Pico projector.

Samsung Galaxy Beam

So far, many mobile manufacturers have produced phones that carry a projector, but as far as I know none have been very successful. Why did they fail? The main reason was the sheer size of such devices and the poor battery life. The Galaxy Beam, however, is not like the others. The Samsung Galaxy Beam has a 4 inch display and also runs on Android 2.3 Gingerbread. That, combined with a projector does sound like a pretty good package. Here are the complete specifications of the device.

Samsung Galaxy Beam Complete Specifications

  • Android 2.3 (Gingerbread)
  • A 4 inch  WVGA TFT display with 480×800 resolution
  • 1 GHz Dual-Core Processor
  • 1 GB of RAM
  • 5 megapixel rear camera with Auto-focus and Flash, a front facing 1.3 megapixel camera for video calls
  • 8GB of Internal Memory expandable via MicroSD slot (up to 32GB)
  • Bluetooth 3.0+HS, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n 2.4GHz, MicroUSB, USB 2.0 and 3.5mm audio jack
  • a 2000 mAh battery for longer life
  • a 15 lumen projector with a projection area of 50 inches

The best part about the Galaxy beam is that it has a very slim profile for a phone with a projector. It can be easily carried around in your pockets and doesn’t actually look like it has a projector.

See what I mean? You can use that projector to share photos and videos with all your friends, which I’m sure, sounds fun. The pricing details haven’t been announced yet, but we’ll be sure to update you when it is. Record 720p HD videos using that 5 megapixel camera and then share it with your family and friends. No need to transfer it to your computer, then show it on the big screen!

Galaxy Beam hands on video:

Here is a hands on video of Samsung Galaxy Beam from MWC2012 by MobileBurn:

The Samsung Galaxy Beam, if priced right, could be a success. Specially since it has some really good hardware too! What do you have to say about this device?

Here’s Why the iPhone May Always Have a 3.5 Inch Display

There’s a really practical reason as to why Apple thinks that a mobile phone touting a display larger than 3.5 inches is actually useless. After reading this post you’ll probably get rid of that Galaxy S 2 with the huge 4.3 inch screen. Normal human beings don’t use all 10 fingers at one go, while using the phone to make a call, reply to text, look something up or any regular gesture.

All of us normally use our thumb finger most of the time. Why? Because it is easier to do so and this way, you can also hold your phone securely in your palm. Now, go hold your 4 inch device and try reaching the top corner of the screen with your thumb, unless you’re one of the Fantastic 4’s, this is not normally possible. This is where display size matters.

A mobile device that has a 4 inch or larger display is practically useless, since you’ll not be able to reach all the areas of the magnificent AMOLED or IPS touchscreen without risking to drop it. Here’s a piece of information from Designer Dustin Curtis who believes;

Touching the upper right corner of the screen on the Galaxy S II using one hand, with its 4.27-inch screen, while you’re walking down the street looking at Google Maps, is extremely difficult and frustrating. I pulled out my iPhone 4 to do a quick test, and it turns out that when you hold the iPhone in your left hand and articulate your thumb, you can reach almost exactly to the other side of the screen. This means it’s easy to touch any area of the screen while holding the phone in one hand, with your thumb. It is almost impossible to do this on the Galaxy S II.

As you can see, in the above screenshot, this is actually very true. Now, go try it on your phone, if you have a device that has a display anywhere south of 4 inch, it’ll be really easy to use with one hand. But, a 3.5 inch display is actually the best to go with. When Apple recently introduced the iPhone 4S, people were really disappointed that it carried the same design and screen size. Now you know why Apple products actually make sense. Having a big screen is very pointless, unless you have nothing else to do with your other hand or are watching movies and playing games on it.

This is why Apple chose to stick with a 3.5 inch display and maybe, even the iPhone 5 will sport a display smaller than 4 inch, or maybe they’ll come up with something out of the world.

Don’t you think a phone with a large display is actually a pain to use with one hand, because that’s how normal phones are used.

Huawei Launches the Honor with HD Display and 3 Days Battery Life

Times like this are rare. Why? Because Huawei doesn’t usually launch mobile phones, they’re are good at something else, but it looks like they could be good at making mobile phones too. Huawei just unveiled the Honor, a 4 inch FWGA HD touch phone running on Android 2.3.5 that has some really good hardware inside it and also quite good looking.

If you remember, this is not the first time that Huawei is introducing new mobile phones that run on the Android OS. We actually went for a live Press Release of those mobile phones known as Ideos X5, Ideos X2 and Ideos Chat. Though, all those phones were quite good in the area of hardware, but not so good when it came to the Android OS, since they were either running on Android 2.1 or 2.2. However, this time, they’ve kept that in mind and launched the Huawei Honor with Android 2.3.5, the latest version currently available.

The features of this phone is quite impressive, I mean that FWVGA 4 inch HD display does make you go ‘whoa’. Actually, that’s because of the way it looks, strikingly similar to the Samsung Galaxy S. Victor Xu, the chief marketing officer of Huawei Device said;

Huawei Honor encapsulates the Huawei brand – it features simple-to-use, advanced technology that allows people to share and connect easily. Honor provides a package of features that elevates the smartphone user experience, including an ultra-long battery life, so critical to the performance of smartphones but yet is often downplayed. Consumers now have a high-performing smartphone that lets them communicate, connect, entertain and share content for an extended period of time without compromising on looks, technology or style.

Let me list down it’s features then, excluding the beautiful display and Android OS;

  • 1.4 Ghz Single core processor
  • 4.0 inch 16M 16:9 true color FWVGA capacitive touch screen
  • 8 megapixels auto focus camera supporting HDR, with 2 megapixels front-facing camera
  • Measures 10.9mm (0.43 inches) at its thinnest point and weighs around 140g (0.3 pounds)
  • WiFi 802.11b/g/n and Bluetooth V2.1 with A2DP, Micro USB 2.0 port
  • 512M RAM + 4G ROM memory with a memory card slot up to 32GB
  • 1900mAh battery
  • Exclusive Huawei user-interface with a dynamic weather widget
  • 160GB network capacity CloudDrive
  • DLNA-certified enables sharing with other DLNA-certified devices
Now, with all those features and hardware, one would normally expect about 1 day of batter backup. This is where you’d be wrong, because Huawei claim that this device provides up to 3 days of battery life on normal usage. I bet normal means keeping it switched off.
Anyways, we have no clue about the pricing or availability. However, it should be available in Asia around December this year and maybe it will never hit other countries. At least that’s what the press release says.
Would you like to buy the Huawei Honor or will you be making a face when I you hear Huawei?

Samsung Galaxy Note: Neither a Phone nor a Tablet

Talk about not knowing the difference between speed and top speed and this new device from Samsung falls under the same category. A device that’s neither a mobile phone nor a tablet device. Kind of the same situation we had with the Samsung Galaxy Tab. Samsung unveiled a new device at IFA today, the Galaxy Note, which is literally too huge to be called a phone, but it is one.

The Samsung Galaxy Note has a super huge 5.3 inch Super AMOLED display with a 1280 x 800 resolution that makes photos, notes and everything else look real good. The big screen isn’t the only thing that’s awesome with this device. The Note brings a new interface known as S Pen, that uses a Stylus to draw and store things directly from your homescreen. It’s integrated with Samsung’s TouchWiz UI and consists of apps such as a Planner, a To-Do list and Memos that can be used as a piece of paper. Also, developers can develop apps for the S Pen interface since Samsung has decided to let the SDK out.

Interesting, don’t you think? Well, for a phone with a 5.3 inch it’s just normal. Now let’s have a look at the basic specifications of the Galaxy Note. It has the similar processor as the Galaxy S II, the  dual-core 1.4GHz processor and an 8 megapixel camera at the back. In spite of it’s huge size, the phone is extremely thin and considerably light as well. There’s no word on the pricing or availability yet, but Samsung is in talks with the Carriers to get it out in the open as soon as possible. We hope the same. Now, just relax and watch this video of the Samsung Galaxy Note, which should leave you with your mouth open for about 4 seconds.

We’ll let you know as soon as this beast is available in the market. Until then answer this riddle. What has a 5.3 inch display, is not a tablet, can place calls, but again, it can’t be called a phone. Don’t think so hard!!

Samsung Galaxy S II will Meet Uncle Sam Very Soon

People in the United States have waited really long for this day, the arrival of the Samsung Galaxy S II. The Android powered super smart-phone was never announced in the United States, but was available in it’s home country Korea and few other place including India.

However, the phone never met with Uncle Sam and all the countrymen and women were sad. You don’t have to be anymore, as Samsung has just announced that the S II will very soon be available from AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint. Sadly, Verizon users will not be able to get hold of the most powerful Android Smartphone, carrying the best hardware and software, apparently.

The Galaxy S II was a great success, selling around 5 million units in just 85 days, which is quite remarkable as it wasn’t even available in the U.S. Now that it is, analysts say that it could sell even more. All the carriers selling the device will name and price it accordingly, also they’ll be shaped differently. The specifications of the device such as hardware and software will mostly be the same, only the pricing and other carrier related charges may vary. The 1.2GHz Cortex A9 processor, 4.3 inch of Super AMOLED display, 1GB RAM, 8-megapixel camera, 16GB of storage will remain the same.

What may vary is the data connection speeds. Of course you’ll have 4G connectivity, with Sprint using WiMax, AT&T and T-Mobile holding hands with HSPA+. You can see in the image below, all the designs are different for all the carriers, including the logo placement.

There’s no much information about pricing and availability, but we did read ‘very soon’ and yes you can expect it to be priced like the iPhone 4. Perhaps $199 a pop. We’ll keep you informed about the availability and pricing as soon as we get word.

So any of you living in the US? How’d you feel about this?

Micromax X40 Projector Phone Launched: Specs and Features

Another projector phone has hit India. Technology is undoubtedly progressing here in India. Sometime in March, Spice Popkorn was launched which turned out to be the first projector phone in India but it was priced at Rs. 6,700 so when compared, Micromax X40, would turn out to be a better pick because it has some awesome features and it is the cheapest phone with a projector. Another great thing is that the projector lens is adjustable which helps you to change projection sizes on the viewing screen. This phone is definitely going to be a hit. Want to know more about it? Keep reading.

micromax x40

  • Micromax X40 supports dual-sim feature.
  • Multiple-format document reader that opens up Word, Excel, PDF and PowerPoint files for you.
  • It has a TFT display screen.
  • The size of the display screen is 2.4 inches with a resolution of 240 x 320 pixels.
  • Internal memory is 80 MB which can be expanded up to 4 GB using a microSD card.
  • It will have a 2 megapixels rear camera with not much special features. No secondary camera, of course.
  • It will just be another light weight phone with a weight of 148 grams.
  • Bluetooth, WAP and USB data would be available in the “Connectivity” section.
  • Micromax X40 is powered by a standard battery for up to 2.5 hours of battery life.
  • Social networking applications would be available in the phone.

Hmm… so this phone is great when its specifications and price is compared. It has totally outdone its only competitor Spice Popkorn just by making sure that people can afford it easily. The adjustable projector sounds good and would definitely feel good.

The price of Micromax X40 is around Rs. 5,000.

If you are looking for a projector phone and are stuck between Spice Popkorn and Micromax X40, go for X40 without any other thoughts. It’s much affordable than Popkorn and the features are great as well. The looks might not be much attractive, but this is a phone which is high-at-features and low-at-cost.
