3 Smart & Quick Ways to Transfer Photos From iPhone to Mac

Transfer photos from iPhone to MacIn case you were looking for the most efficient ways to transfer or remove photographs from your iPhone using your Mac, here’s the right place. We show you three fastest ways to do it. Best thing is that you don’t need to download any extra app. We’ll be using apps already on your Mac. iPhoto users may read on for a faster alternative.

Apple has made downloading images from your iPhone to your Mac a painless deal. I will be showing you how to accomplish this task using three applications – iPhoto, Image Capture and Preview app on Mac OS. Also, with the new generation of iPod Touch and its inbuilt cameras, iPod Touch users will be needing this guide too.

How to Transfer photos from iPhone to Mac OS:

iPhoto

While iPhoto has some great features available it’s a little slow if you just need a screenshot or temporary image transfer. However, if you wish to keep the photos for long and want to keep them organized in albums this is the best way to do it. iPhoto will help you browse photos as albums or event.

Also, you have a nice set of editing and slideshow tools available to further enrich the experience. Most of you are already familiar with how to import photos using iPhoto. For those not, here’s how. Open iPhoto, Connect your iPhone over USB. In less than 30 seconds, your iPhone should appear in the device list.

Trust me on this, running iPhoto first and then connecting iPhone is the best way to do it. Once you see the iPhone appear select as many or all pics and click on import.

The photos will be copied to iPhoto album and you will be asked whether to delete them from the phone or not.

Delete iPhone photos

There are times when I don’t want to save them in the iPhoto album (temporary images like screenshots) and just wish to save them manually and quickly. For that, we have the following two ways to attain the task.

Image Capture

Believe it or not, this app has always existed in your Mac’s Applications folder. Just go to Applications > Image Capture or use Spotlight to search for the same.

imagecapture-iphone-mac2.png

Your iPhone will appear under the list of devices on the left. Just select the pics you want and click on import. Alternatively, drag the pics out to any finder window or your desktop and you’re done. Yes, it’s that simple. In fact pretty much the way you have been doing it on windows to transfer iPhone pics. You can also delete as many pics as you want by clicking the small red button in the bottom.

Image Capture Mac photo import

Preview Application

How could we miss this out. Preview lets you view practically anything on the Mac right? Right from PDFs to images. Now let’s use it to transfer pictures from the iPhone. Just run Preview, in case it already isn’t.

Hit the file menu and click on import from iPhone. The name of the device depends on what you called your iPhone in iTunes. The process of importing and deleting pictures remains same as that in the previous case of Image Capture.

Mac Preview app

I’m sure just like me, most of you did not yet know about all of the three ways to import iPhone photographs. Go ahead and try it out for yourself. If you run into any issue feel free to use the comment box.

Dummies Guide to Facetime on iPhone and iPod Touch

facetime1.png Facetime is one of the best free feature of iOS device. The best thing about Facetime free video calling service is, it’s available on all Apple devices. Be it, Mac, iPhone, iPad or any other iOS device with camera on it. First time user might get confused with how to use FaceTime, and in this guide I will exactly be talking about the same. This guide will answer all your queries regarding Facetime on iOS devices, right from activation to making calls.

Facetime is one of the most talked about features of iPhone 4. Yesterday, we posted some pictures from our first impressions of Facetime on iPhone 4 as Harsh and I tried a Facetime conversation. We were totally amazed by the quality of audio and video.

Facetime is also very intuitive and easy to use. In fact we are Facetime Ninjas now, in less than thirty minutes of video calling. Here’s how you can get started and most of other related queries answered.

How to Activate Facetime on your iPhone:

Though this guide is written for iPhone4, but if you are using any other version of iPhone/iPad, Facetime activation method remains the same.

Go to Settings > Phone > Facetime > On. The iPhone  will automatically send an SMS(international for non US users) and within 10 seconds your Facetime will be active.

facetime-iphone4-25.jpg Facetime activation

This only needs to be done once per sim card, and that too is automatic. No registration or user id required. Like Apple says, Facetime works out of the box.

Once the “Waiting for Activation” message goes away you are good to go. Please note that you will not be able to see the SMS sent for activation through your Messages app. If you have trouble activating Facetime, wait for our post which talks about activation issues for unofficial carriers.

iPod Touch users go to Settings > Facetime to confirm and verify your email address that will be used to receive calls. If unverified, follow instructions sent to email to get started.

Charges for using Fcaetime

No. We were not charged for our Facetime calls. It’s free for video calls between iPhone 4 and iPod touch devices. Both devices need to be connected to a wifi network with internet access(not necessarily same network).

How to start a Facetime video call

There has been a lot of doubt as to how the Facetime call is authenticated. Harsh and I tried the email address method yesterday but that failed and here’s why.
Facetime uses two ways to identify people – Phone number or email address. And the the type of device determines which one will be used.
facetime-iphone4-80.jpg
  • When calling an iPhone 4: Use the phone number of the person you are calling.
  • When calling an iPod touch (4th generation): Use the email address designated for FaceTime of the person you are calling.

Please note that you need iOS 4.1 to make calls or receive them from users on iPod Touch.

How to Make a Facetime Call

There are two ways of initiating a Facetime call. You could make a phone call just the way you normally do and then once you are there on the call click on Facetime. If your friend accepts the Facetime request call, voice call will end and you will no more be charged for voice.

facetime-iphone4-79.jpg
facetime-iphone4-83.jpg facetime-iphone4-86.jpg

Another way is directly making a Facetime call. Go to your contacts page and tap Facetime. Choose a method of identification(phone or email). Your friend will receive a notification if he’s on wifi. If he accepts you are good to go.

On iPod touch, there is an additional Facetime app. You can use it to call any of your contacts or through the contacts app like mentioned above.

Can I switch Cameras

facetime3.png

The Facetime call starts with your front camera. You can switch to the rear camera and back by clicking on the button in lower right corner.
facetime4.png

Some other features of Facetime you might want to know:

Muting Facetime

The Mute button will only prevent your audio from going through. Your video will still be visible to the other person.

Landscape Support

Just rotate the iPhone to switch to this mode.

Moving the preview window

The small window which shows your own Face can be moved around by dragging if it obstructs your view in the default position.

Do something else and get back to Facetime again?

If you need to check another app while you are on Facetime, no problem. Just hit home button and do your work. Your video will freeze on last frame and audio chat can still be continued. Once you click on the green bar similar to the one you get with voice calls, your video chat will be resumed.

Last Tip for Facetime Users:

You can also add Facetime to your Favorites list and start a Facetime call right from there. Facetime calls will also feature in your Recent Calls history.

Conclusion

So, that’s all we have gathered so far about Facetime. It’s been a great experience so far for us. Rumors are afloat that Facetime might soon come to iPads, Macs and Windows PCs too. We are really looking forward to that.

I hope this detailed Facetime usage guide will help you to start using this useful free service. In upcoming article, we will also be talking about iMessage, but for now why don’t you go ahead and try making a Facetime call to other iOS user in your contact list.

How-to Install WhatsApp on iPod Touch

WhatsApp on iPod Touch

WhatsApp is one of most commonly used cross-platform instant messenger apps. It’s available on almost all platforms and even Windows Phone 7 will be getting it soon. However, one some platforms, it’s not free and it just won’t work if you don’t have a phone. WhatsApp isn’t made for devices that don’t function as a phone. It specifically requires a phone number to be activated.

WE live in a world full of stubborn people who believe in not believing what I just said. And it’s thanks to those people that we have things like jailbreak, rooting, hacking, Custom ROMs, unlocks and much much more. It’s also thanks to them that we were able to install and use WhatsApp on an iPad. Now, we have a tutorial on how to do the same with the Apple iPod Touch.

The iPod Touch, since iPod Touch doesn’t have a SIM, is not compatible with WhatsApp. But, if you follow this tutorial, then you can force the WhatsApp messenger to run on your iPod Touch 4G too. You can try it out on your older iPod Touch and let us know if it works on them.

Guide to Install WhatsApp on iPod Touch:

  • Install WhatsApp on your iPod Touch. If you couldn’t find it on the App Store, then you can download it manually or use Installous to get it. You’ll need a jailbroken iPod Touch of course.
  •  If the first step doesn’t work for you, then download iPhone Configuration Utility and also download WhatsApp from iTunes.
  • Open iPhone Configuration utility and select your iPod Touch from the left-hand side. Now head over to Applications and click on Add IPA.
  • Select the downloaded WhatsApp ipa, which should be in the iTunes Media> Mobile Applications folder on your computer.
  • After selection click on install and it should be installed on your iPod Touch.
  • Now go to Cydia and search for WhatsPad. Install and reboot your device.
That’s all you need to do. Open WhatsApp and give a valid mobile number so that it can send the 3-digit verification code and you’re good to go. You’ll need a Wi-Fi connection always, since iPod Touch doesn’t have any other means to connect to the internet.
Enjoy WhatsApp on iPod Touch.

50 GB of Cloud Storage for Anyone with an iOS device – Box.Net

The new Apple iPhone 4S is all about the iCloud, storage in the cloud. And that’s what all the future devices are going to go for, because it’s safer, there’s less chances of your data being stolen and it’ll probably last forever. You don’t have to worry about your storage device fail. Yes, cloud storage is the new future and everybody has been at it.

We’ve already seen how soon DropBox got the fame it needed, then there’s Google’s cloud based Chromebooks, Microsoft’s Skydrive, Apple’s iCloud and now there’s Box.Net. If you’re an iOS user and have recently upgraded to iOS 5, then you can take advantage of iCloud. It’s true that you only get 5 GB of free cloud space, but i suppose that should be enough for a few hundred songs or photos. But, what if you want to store thousands of photos and HD videos on the cloud, that’s going to need a lot more space. Sure you can buy more storage from iCloud, but what if I told you that you can get 50 GB of storage for nothing.

Yup, that’s right. If you’ve heard of Dropbox, then you must’ve heard of Box.Net. Both are similar kinds of services that provide online storage space for your needs. Recently, Box.Net made it clear on their blog that anyone who possess an iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad, is eligible for 50 GB of  Cloud storage. For free. They’ve also increased the maximum upload limit of a file from 25MB to 100MB.

To get access to 50 GB of storage, all you need to do is, head over to the App Store and download the latest Box.net app for your iOS device. Once the app is installed, Sign up for a new account and you should be presented with this once in a lifetime offer.

This offer is valid for 50 days from the start date, which was October 12. So don’t you worry, you’ve got plenty of time. That’s 47 days left. So, go on and download the app right away. Sorry Android, Windows Phone 7 and Symbian users, you’ll have to stick with your memory cards for now.

Top 3 PMPs (Portable Media Players) Available in India

PMP stands for Portable Media Player. These kind of devices are capable of storing and playing digital media such as audio, images, video, documents, etc. The PMPs are especially made for those people who are very much on-the-go and cannot survive without the daily dose of technology and entertainment. PMPs can entertain you a lot and won’t make you feel lonely. Even though, mobile phones are quietly replacing the PMPs but still many people like having PMPs as their must have Gadgets. The PMPs help you to enjoy and have fun with the digital media you want to see and listen. That’s why I decided to find three PMPs which you would search for if you are looking for a PMP in India:

1. Apple iPod Touch 4

It’s Apple only, which took PMP to new heights. The coolness of the iPod touchscreen is one of the major reason to call it as best PMP available in the market. iPod is not only available in the Touch form but it is also available in other different forms(iPod Nano, iPod Shuffle and iPod Classic). This PMP is truly a gem. The best of them all.

  • iPod Touch 4 comes in three models – 8 GB, 32 GB and 64 GB. These three models would cover all the needs of a person.
  • It is lightweight and it weighs only 101 grams.
  • It has a display of 3.5 inches with multi-touch function. The resolution is 960 x 640 pixels.
  • iPod Touch comes with 2 cameras. Rear camera of 0.7 megapixels and front camera of VGA quality(for Facetime).  It also allows us to record videos in High Definition (720p).
  • Up to 40 hours battery for music playback and up to 7 hours for video playback.
  • 256 MB of RAM & 800 Mhz Processor is available.
  • Facetime, Retina display, HD video recording and Game center.

2. Sony Walkman NWZ-A845/B

Sony Walkman is one of the most famous brands that offer PMPs. Sony Walkman series is very preferable in India because of the famous-ness of Sony, here in India. Sony Walkman NWZ-A845/B is one of the best in the whole Sony Walkman series and hence I am including it in the list. Read about its specifications and the features below and you may get impressed as well.

  • Sony Walkman NWZ has a storage of 16 GB.
  • It weighs just 62 grams which is just too light to carry.
  • It has a 2.8 inched OLED color display screen with a resolution of 400 x 240 pixels.
  • No camera is available in this PMP.
  • Up to 9 hours battery for music playback and up to 8 hours for video playback.

This PMP is just a simple one. Two things where it excels would be the weight and the cool design. The design is enough to attract and the specs are fine enough to take this PMP into consideration.

The price of Sony Walkman NWZ-A845/B is Rs. 11,990

3. Cowon V5 HD

Cowon isn’t a much famous PMP brand in India but it surely is outside India. Cowon produces exciting and great gadgets. It has also launched a few PMPs, Cowon V5 HD being one of them. • It weighs 197 grams which maybe a little over-weight for a PMP.
  • It has a 4.8 inches display screen with a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels.
  • No camera is available in this PMP.
  • Up to 45 hours for music playback and up to 10 hours for video playback.

This PMP is sleek and great in design. A PMP that should be totally considered when looking for a PMP. The only negative point would be the absence of Wi-Fi which should be added soon. The pricing is given below.

  • Cowon V5 HD (16 GB) – Rs. 14,000

FlipOver: Mute/Lock Your iDevice When You Flip It

Jailbreaking your iDevice, although it’s considered illegal and stuff, can sometimes be very useful since you’re iDevice becomes more customizable. Apple wants you to do things their way, providing limitations for everything. Jailbreaking lets your iDevice out the Jail and exposes it to a ton of extra and awesome feature. Recently the Celeste App was released, providing the long awaited Bluetooth sharing functionality with everyone.

Here’s another app that brings a really useful functionality to your iOS device. It’s called FlipOver and it brings that HTC like functionality, which lets you mute or lock your idevice when you turn it over. As soon as you turn it back over, your iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad will un-mute and unlock automatically.

That’s a really nice functionality yet again added to your favorite iDevice by means of Cydia. And the procedure isn’t hard either, you don’t have to add any repo or anything and there won’t be any extra icons on your homescreen. All you have to do is open Cydia and then go to the search box and type in FlipOver.

Once installed, after paying $0.99, go to the settings folder and enable the only two options Mute or Lock under the FlipOver tab. You can see how it’s done in the video after the break. You’ll also get to adjust the sensitivity and the refresh rates to tell your iDevice at what angle to mute/lock it.

You’ll need to Jailbreak your device and it’ll have to be running on iOS 4.0 or above to make use of this app.

What do you think of this app? Tell us if you use any other useful Cydia apps like this.
