The Web is Not Yet Dead!

The Web is Dead InfographicI am assuming that you have already heard of one of the famous article of Wired magazine proclaiming the death of the Web. The article is centered around the following infographic.

You may like to comeback after reading the linked post. For the lazy geeks like me, the article can be summarized in the following points

  • The web is only html pages and images that are displayed in a browser. It is just one of the applications that make use of TCP/IP protocol.
  • The web is distinct from other applications like video, p2p networks, facebook applications.
  • The infographic displays the proportion of total megabytes of data consumed by each of these applications as a percentage of total data consumed through all applications using tcp/ip protocol over the years.

The Web is dead or not?

This article is really important for all geeks out there as it highlights the fact that the alternative methods of serving data like video/applications/ feed reader are getting increasingly important. It will have profound effect on which startups will succeed and which ones will fail and the way we may try to popularize our products. Having said that, I will like to tell you that the web is very much alive. Look at the third bullet in the summary of the post with particular focus on the highlighted words.

  1. That graph is measuring amount of data used by different applications. Obviously I consume more data while watching a video on youtube as compared to browsing the web for mobile phone prices for an equivalent amount of time.
  2. While the proportion of the web in the total pie may be going down, the absolute number is increasing. 45% of 5 billion users is much better than 70% of 500 million users. That 5 billion number is not a result of my imagination. The 5 billionth device is about to plug into the internet.
  3. The Wired “the web is dead“article focuses on usage pattern in US alone. That is of no use in a world where most internet companies get majority of users from outside US. Any analysis that does not include emerging markets like India and China, is useless IMHO.
  4. According to this Techcrunch report, the base data counts Youtube videos towards video applications like Skype video and not towards web data. That is wrong since Youtube does use a browser to work and as per the agreed definition, it should have been counted towards web.

Considering all of the above, I will suggest that there is no need to mourn the death of the internet yet. Still we will do well to focus on emerging patterns in other streams as well to spot any apparent opportunity. What do you think?

Top Tools To Make iPhone Ringtones For Free

make iPhone ringtonesAre you sick of hearing default Apple ringtone when your iPhone is ringing? Did you know it is not hard to accomplish either? This article will guide you through a couple of different ways to make iPhone ringtones absolutely for free. We will not list any paid methods, because we sincerely believe it is not worth spending money on something that can be done for free and will not take you more than 5 minutes, guaranteed!

Would you like your favorite music track to ring every time your iPhone rings? Not that many of you probably know that you can make iPhone ringtones via various different conversion methods. Do not worry, all of them are really easy and literally everyone will accomplish them. Probably most well known way is installing a related iOS application. Try to search for and install free applications only, because there are tons of free ones and there is really no need in paid app for this task. You can find all of these apps mentioned below in Apple App Store without any problems.

iPhone apps & Tools to Make Free iPhone Ringtone:

Ringtone maker:

Ringtone maker

This application supports unlimited number of ringtones, it features fade in and fade out effects and has very user friendly interface. Ringtone Maker is capable of recording any sounds with your iPhone microphone and making it as a ringtone. I tried this option and the quality wasn’t that good to be honest. <Download Ringtone Maker>

Myxer Ringtones:

Myxer Ringtones is another great application to easily create and customize ringtones. You can either create music ringtones from the music stored on your iPhone, or you can choose free ringtones from Myxer’s catalog. Catalog contains converted ringtones that were submitted by other members. This is really great feature and you can always check the ringtone in the catalog before converting it on your own. <Link: Myxer ringtones>

Ringtone Maker by Mobile 17:

Ringtone Maker Pro from Mobile17 helps you to make your own custom free ringtones and or choose from ringtones generated by other users. Unlike those other apps, Ringtones Maker has no editing restrictions (up to 40 seconds) and also is free. <Link>

Last but not least is iTunes. You probably have already heard from your friends that you can convert your favorite music tracks into ringtones with the help of iTunes. This simple tutorial will guide you through the whole process.

Melofania:

Melofania

Although all these ways are extremely easy to follow, I and many others prefer to convert their music into ringtones online. You don’t have to download or install anything, the magic happens straight in your favorite web browser. One of the fastest online ringtones conversion tools is Melofania.com. Ringtone creation process with Melofania is a piece of cake job. You simply upload your favorite track, cut and select the right song piece and the whole process does not take more than 5 minutes.

Audiko:

We have already talked about Audio.net and it not only let you upload audio but you can make iPhone ringtone using Youtube video. Something, I hardly recommend. You can also download created ringtones in .mp3 format.

Hopefully this article will help all iPhone owners to finally stop using those default ringtones Apple offers and convert your favorite music track into ringtone that will be supported for iPhone. Enjoy customizing your ringtones!

How many times you have ended up downloading a .dmg file extension on your Windows PC and wondering what is this extension and how you can open it.

.dmg Files are associated with Mac OS. If you have never used Mac, .dmg is a virtual disk image, and can be opened in Mac os. But you can use it’s Trial for 15 Days. You can also use this Trick to Burn .dmg files in Ubuntu and Linux. Another way is to use MagicISO software and convert .dmg file into .iso version and then mount it using any virtual CD/DVD software.

Here is a video tutorial, which will help you to understand the process better. Though, I suggest to mute your speakers as song might annoy your serious work mode:

I hope this will solve your query but in case if you are stuck anywhere, feel free to ask questions via comments.

5 Things Not To Do On Facebook : Never Again!

I love Facebook but there are some things not to do on Facebook publicly. Like dirty laundry it really should be aired behind closed doors. It is time now to have an Internet Protocol and Etiquette manual for Facebook. Wouldn’t it be great to have people take some sort of lessons before they can start social networking?

Something that tells you ‘Facebook poking’ is so very last season (or last century) and that writing on people’s wall will make sure that their mother will read it.  Anyways, here are my top 5 peeves with what people do on Facebook.

Things Not To Do On Facebook

List of crap things to avoid doing on Facebook:

There is no good book or bad book guide for Facebook, but there are certain etiquette which we should follow to make sure our activity doesn’t irritate others. I’m listing some of them below and you can feel free to add one of your things, which irritates you the most on Facebook.

Getting mushy with your partner on Facebook:

Number One on the list is getting Mushy with your partner or spouse. So you are married to the world greatest guy or girl. You want to express your love and appreciation for their existence – sure I get that. But you live in the same house! You meet every night and probably speak 10 times a day! (If you get mushy on Facebook then one can safely presume you speak to each other 10 times a day!!) So why not use any of these occasions to express yourself? Why Facebook? Why us?

Even with your girl friend and boy friend, what’s the point of showing to the world, that how crazy and madly you love  your partner by writing status message which might not fit everyone. Though, you can always use personal tagging and keep the visibility to close group and list, but again something is better to convey in person. Is int it?

Tagging Everyone on your profile picture:

If you ask me which are the best things not to do on Facebook, I would emphasize more on using tagging feature carefully. Even on status and on Pictures. The second is tagging all and sundry on your picture. Yes, your picture is gorgeous and you want us to not miss it. So send a message, don’t tag us in all your pictures. Because every comment or like means that we get notified – I sure could live without that! Tagging should come with a disclaimer saying ‘tagging is not a toy – use with discretion‘.

Tagging on old-age pictures:

The third or maybe this is second part two… Putting up old high school pictures and tagging us on it. And leaving it public. There are things that I’d rather that the world and their uncle not see. It also then invites a spate of friend requests from people you have no memory of or just don’t want to be friend with. The other is putting up pictures where you look great but haven’t noticed that people around you have red eyes and look like they are going to a Halloween party. Really, don’t put them up, or correct and put, or at least don’t tag!! Or at least be courteous enough to ask your friend if you should upload and tag those picture or not. And for the sake of holly molly, set your privacy settings perfectly so that only your friends and tagged person friends can see it. Why do you want whole world to like and share your picture until unless you are a celebrity?

Random friend requests:

The fourth is the fourth and not the first because Facebook very kindly moves this to spam automatically. These are the random ‘you’re so cute’ – ‘let’s hook up’ friend requests and messages. Yes, Facebook is about connection but there is a big difference between stalking and getting connected. Specially, with such cheesy line, do you expect me or anyone to accept your friend request?

Who does this work for? Who says yes to them? So you’re thinking – here’s this hot chick, I’m a loser, chances are she’ll say yes??!!  Really, what are you thinking or not thinking! Still, if you are one of those who believe in dating on Facebook, you can refer to this guide “Date on Facebook” for better way to approach and continue the conversation.

Sending Facebook App request:

So you just landed into an awesome Facebook app which shows your crush meter or probably most stalked Facebook profile. I know you liked it and you want your friends to have it, sending notification is cool, but there are unlimited apps and if all my friends are sending my app request or Fan page request, how annoying it could be?

The last is a tie between sending app requests and adding to your Facebook group. Stop sending app requests – it’s been there and done that and never going to do again! And didn’t your momma tell you it’s impolite to just add people on to a group without asking them. Seriously, send a request – it’s the polite thing to do.

  • Stop sending random app request
  • Stop adding me on Facebook groups
  • Don’t send me any random Facebook page request

Wee certainly, there are many more things which can be annoying like when you keep updating your status back to back and bombard your friends time line or when you keep uploading random wallpaper on Facebook & tag all the friends. Well, list is endless but if you think once before doing anything unusual it will not only save you from future embarrassment but also you will be in the list of good Facebook friends. Choice is yours?

What one thing which you don’t want your Facebook friends to be doing on their profile? Do let us know via comment and also like & share this post on Facebook, to let them know what annoys you most on Facebook?

How To Extend Wireless Network at Home

As wireless technology continues to push forward, wired networks are quickly becoming antiquated. Wireless networks allow individuals to connect to the internet over great distances, providing mobile broadband coverage without the need to mount interminably long cables up and down their homes.

Nevertheless, for all their convenience, wireless networks still suffer from bandwidth issues. While the range of a wireless network may extend across the breadth of one’s home, the quality and strength of that signal may diminish greatly depending on one’s location. Today, we will look into some of the easiest way to extend wireless network at your house.

Extend Wireless Network

If a home is relatively large, has multiple stories or a number of successive walls, it may mitigate signal strength and occasionally cause disconnections. However, many of these problems can be overcome by using a second wireless router or a wireless extender to amplify a weak and diminished signal.

Simple way to extend Wireless network

While an extender, if available from the manufacturer, will simply need to be plugged in, a second wireless router will require some configuration. The following guide will help you set up multiple routers to increase wireless signal strength in your home.

1. Collecting Wireless Network Information

Using the information provided by your router’s manufacturer, login and locate your MAC Address and SSID in the Settings or Wireless Settings menu and write the information down.

2. Connect the Second Wireless Router

Using a network cable, connect the second router to a computer and power it on. Refer to the manual and follow the instructions for setting it up. Be sure the router has a wireless repeater function, or else it will not function as a secondary amplifier.

3. Enabling the Repeater Setting

Once you have logged in to the router, navigate to the Repeater Settings menu. In most cases the repeater function can be turned off and on by clicking a button or placing a check mark beside the option. There will also be a field where you can enter the SSID and MAC Address of the primary router. Save the settings and reboot the router. Now that the wireless connection has been enabled, you can remove the network cable and place the router at a desired location.

4. Place Your Secondary Router

Set your router at a distance from which you want the signal to be augmented, preferably in between the router and the furthest reaches of your home. If the router does not work, or you make a mistake in setting it up, press and hold the reset button for ten seconds. The router will revert to its stock configuration, at which point you may repeat the setup process. Well,  I have used Belkin router for the same purpose and it works great.

I hope these tips would help you to extend wireless network at home or in the office. Do let us know if you enjoyed this, and we will come up with more similar topic.

The Samsung Galaxy Note is a power packed superhero among smart-phones and this is amply proved in its advertisement. The beautiful panoramic view of the hills and rivers and beaches beautifully orchestrated into the 5.3” screen of the Samsung Galaxy Note is scintillating. The subsequent jugglery with the images and creation of the new idea is not just engaging but also shows the viewer the sheer potential of the device.

Made for dreamers by dreamers, Samsung Galaxy Note may just replace most of the enterprise smart-phones out there. You may feel free to explore the immense opportunities the phablet provides.

Samsung Galaxy Y-Change to smart

Smart, peppy, and can’t take nonsense, thats the youth of India today. They are go- getters and people who are resourceful and require things as fast as possible. The Samsung Galaxy Y has come out with the perfect advertisement to target this burgeoning class of youngsters in India aspiring for the best in the world, at the most affordable price.

The Ads feature two funny premises of an angry boss and a lost business man. The young go-getters who own Samsung Galaxy Y show us that the “Uncles” and “Chiefs” of the world are getting fast outdated. Enter the new “Smart” and young India of android and smart Phone users.

Samsung takes on the Uncles

Samsung mocks the Chiefs

Nokia Lumia 800– Amazing Everyday

Targeted at the social networking users, The Amazing Everyday campaign is both delightful and engaging. With a peppy background score and brilliant visuals, the ad represents everything Nokia Lumia 800 is about; Getting connected, admiring the small things in life, and telling everyone about it. The visuals of the Ad seem just a great metaphor to the exciting and engaging look of the Windows Mango OS, on the exquisitely designed Nokia Lumia 800.

Samsung Galaxy S2– greatest smart-phone

Samsung Galaxy S2 has been a game changer both for Samsung and Android phones around the world. Packed with specifications that rival the Apple iPhone, Samsung Galaxy S2’s ad shows just what your Android Galaxy could be like. Incredible special effects in the ad makes this perhaps the best smart-phone ad in terms of aspirational value. Targeted at not just enterprise users but also the youngsters, the advertisement portrays the multiple needs of a smart-phone customer, Music, Movie, Internet, Games and Work all packed into one powerful package. Truly, Samsung Galaxy S2 is the greatest smart-phone out there.

HTC Explorer– Fingers do the talk

HTC’s shy entry into the Indian smart-phone market has been made with great wit and ingenuity. Targeted at the youth, the Fingers do the talk campaign is focused on exploring the one touch feature of the android enabled HTC explorer . While the Television Ads focus on the efforts of a young boy wooing his sweetheart, the print ad campaigns show the full range of uses of HTC explorer.

Blackberry-Welcome to the family

Welcome to the Blackberry family focuses on the Blackberry messenger feature and the fact that if you want to “belong” to a family you are probably looking for the Blackberry clan of PIN holders and Push messengers.

Karbonn A1– Ahem!!

Karbonn A1 was made for all the aspirants and the dreamers who wish to hold a sleek Smart-phone with all the fancy applications the more luxurious buyers are used to. The ad, perhaps one of the smartest pick at (clears throat) iPhone, sends a clear message: you needn’t miss out on the Smart-phone bandwagon anymore. While I may consider Karbonn to be extremely brave to take on a giant(ala David Vs Goliath), we are not entirely convinced that the Ad would do much to convince anyone Karbonn is even remotely as good as an iPhone. Buy a Karbonn A1 if thats all you can afford.

Summary

The year 2011 was most exciting for Ad makers and smart-phone enthusiasts alike. While it was clearly a year of aggressive marketing by Samsung with its plethora of “smart” options for its users, the other players too came out with exciting and interesting way to show their presence. Nokia’s saving grace was its Lumia both in the ad word as well as its real world presence. 2012 presents itself with more opportunities for companies, everyone has a role to play especially the ones that missed the plot in 2011.
