Jailbreaking always add functionality to iPhone in a very useful kind of a way, I am always in search of some cool Jailbreak tweaks and addons that will further enhance the usability of my iPhone. So today I will be sharing a very interesting find with you that will add a very useful function to your Jailbroken iPhone.
Google Maps application on all the iDevice is quite lacking when we talk about features, and I think for any mapping or navigation app one thing should be there and that is a Speedometer. But this lacking of speedometer shouldn’t be an issue anymore because today I will be telling you about an app that will let you know that how fast you are going within your iPhone’s map applications or even out of them.
So here is a cool Cydia Tweak that will allow you to simply add a speedometer to your iPhone in few simple steps. The app I will be recommending is available on Cydia store and you just have to find it and install the package to enjoy this feature.
‘Speed For Maps’ Cydia App
The name of this basic Cydia tweak is Speed for Maps, it simply overlays a miniature speedometer within the stock maps application on your iPhone. The speedometer adjusts itself on the bottom right side of screen, meaning that it does not hamper the view of your Maps app.
You just need to install the app from Cydia store on your iPhone, respring it and launch the Maps app. There is no need of running a setup of some sort because Speed for Maps is available for instant use.
I tried the tweak on my iPhone while driving in a car and found the speedometer readings to be pretty accurate. It is a very cool app especially in a scenario where you want to know that how fast you are traveling but don’t have an access directly to a speedo. Do try it out on your iPhone’s and let us know that whether you found it useful or not.
Weather is an important part of our day to day lives and we rely on forecast to plan our days, specially if you’re going somewhere. Of course for bloggers its not much roaming, however we do at times step out and go for a stroll if the weather is pleasant. Normally you’d have to use a different weather application and another Maps application if you want both at the same time. Well, things have changed. Google has integrated a really nice weather layer to Google Maps, which gives you forecasts of places with temperatures and conditions.
As you can see in the above screenshot, a new Weather layer has been added to Google Maps. This provides good weather information with appropriate icons for Sunny, Rainy, Cloudy etc and also shows cloud cover, which is quite cool. Cloud cover is only visible if you zoom, if it’s zoomed in, you can only get reports on current weather conditions. If you click on a weather icon of a certain place, you’ll be presented with the forecast for the next four days with temperature, humidity and wind conditions.
To change the units of the readings, you can use the Left side panel. It has options to change the speed unit, temperature units and also the option to enable or disable clouds. All this will come in really handy if you’re planning a road trip to your hometown or some place that you want to visit. It’s always advisable to keep an eye out for the weather, which now has become easier thanks to Google Maps. To learn more on this new feature, you can watch the video after the break.

What do you think about this new feature? Do you think you’ll be using the weather layer when making holiday plans?
Google Maps is undoubtedly one of the best map applications ever. No matter where you are, Google Maps never lets you lose your way. Ever since it was released, Google has been adding various features to Google Maps like turn-by-turn navigation, street view, etc. Well, Google has now added yet another feature to Google Maps for Android – “Download Map Area”. It is an experimental feature and has been launched through Google Labs.
Download Map Area is a feature that lets you download maps of any particular area and access it offline without any data coverage or Wi-Fi. You can download maps of up to a 10-mile radius of the area you selected. The maps are downloaded within a minute or two and stores only the base map titles and landmarks on the map. To see the Satellite View and 3D buildings, search for Places and get Directions, you will still require a data connection. However, the downloaded maps will have enough details for you to easily figure out the way.
So, how do you enable and use this new feature anyway?
Well, to start using this feature on your Android phone you first need to make sure that you have the updated version of Google Maps. If not, head over to the Android Market and update your Google Maps. Once you have the updated version, open Google Maps and enable “Download Maps Area” by going to Menu->More->Labs.
On the Map, click on any place (for eg. Cathedral St. Andre) and select more or “>” to get the Place page menu. There you will notice that the Download Map Area option has been added. Just select it and your map will be download within no time. You can now access the downloaded maps even without a data connection or Wi-Fi. You can manage all your downloaded map areas from the Google Maps cache settings. However, all downloaded map areas will be removed from your cache after 30 days.
