How to Enable Hidden Panorama Mode in iOS 5 [Jailbroken]

Looks like at least two new hidden features have been unearthed in the latest iOS 5, and they’re pretty useful. I’m sure all of you must’ve heard of Panorama, a mode that lets you take wider pictures in a single shot. There are many apps out there that you could use to take Panoramic pictures from your iOS devices camera, but imagine a built in feature. Yes, there’s a hidden Panorama mode in the iOS 5 camera app.

How to Enable hidden Panorama Mode in iOS 5

The hidden Panorama mode in iOS 5 lets you take wider pictures and uses the Gyroscope in iPhone 4 and iPad 2 to tell you if your sweeping motion is balanced. It works pretty good for a stock and hidden camera feature and although it doesn’t go all the way to 360 degrees, it covers most of the view. It’s a useful feature then, and here’s how you can get it enabled on your jailbroken iOS 5 device. For now, this only applies to the iPhone 4 and the the iPad 2, because only those come with a gyroscope. There are two ways to enable panorama mode in iOS 5, and below are both of them:

Using iFile to Edit plist Files on iPhone

  • Launch Cydia and install iFile.
  • Open iFile and navigate to var/mobile/Libraries/Preferences and look for the string com.apple.mobileslideshow.plist.
  • Open com.apple.mobileslideshow.plist using the Property List Viewer.
  • Now click on the + button located at the bottom to Add Item.
  • Use the name as EnableFirebreak and the Type as Boolean. Create the new item.
  • Go back and you should now see a toggle to switch on/off EnableFirebreak.
  • Turn it on, exit iFile and respring your device.
  • Open the camera app and you should see Panorama Mode in the Options menu.
That is one way of doing it. Now let me tell you about the second method, which is much simpler and easier for people who don’t like to play with plist files. It involves installing a Cydia tweak called Firebreak.  This tweak is available in the Big Boss repo for free, alternatively, you could also search for it on Cydia and try the Panorama mode out.
Have you unearthed the hidden panorama mode in iOS 5? Do check it out and let us know if it’s going to help you out on your adventures.

Lytro Camera: Shoot First, Focus Later

I’m not a photographer, but that doesn’t mean I do not love using cameras, specially something as amazing as this one. Yet, I don’t use DSLR cameras or such just because they have too many settings and I’m a lazy guy. For times like those, the Lytro Camera is a dream come true. This is the first camera in the world that doesn’t need any kind of settings or focusing or fiddling with buttons and knobs.

The Lytro Camera, unveiled by Lytro, has an anodized aluminum frame, an f/2 lens with 8x optical zoom, two buttons, a 11 mega ray light-field and is all fit into a nice to hold rectangular body. What’s so special about this camera? The Lytro camera can take living photos, that means, you can click a picture and then focus afterwards. This is a new way of taking and sharing pictures and is definitely going to cause a stir in the photography communities.

<Image Credit>

You wouldn’t ever need to focus while taking a picture, and because of that, this camera is amazingly fast and has no shutter lag. The two buttons on the camera will Turn it on and Take pictures. It turns on instantly and takes photos just as you click the second button, no waiting. This means that you’ll never miss a moment, it’s that fast and there is a video demonstration to prove that.

The Lytro is the only consumer camera that lets people instantly capture a scene just as they see it by recording a fundamentally richer set of data than ever before. Lytro cameras feature a light field sensor that collects the color, intensity, and the direction of every light ray flowing into the camera, capturing a scene in four dimensions. To process this additional information, Lytro cameras contain a light field engine that allows camera owners to refocus pictures directly on the camera. When the Lytro’s living pictures are shared online, the light field engine travels with each picture so anyone can interact with them on nearly any device, including web browsers, mobile phones, and tablets-without having to download special software.

That’s it. Photography is not going to be like before. The Lytro Camera comes in three colors and with 2 storage options, 8GB and 16GB.  Prices start from $399 and go up to $499. That’s really cheap for a camera that can take living photos. You can pre-order the Lytro camera on their official website and it will be shipped to you in early 2012. The software is currently only available for the Mac, but it’ll be soon available for Windows. Ren Ng, the founder of Lytro states;

Light field photography was once only possible with 100 cameras tethered to a supercomputer in a lab. Today it’s accessible to everyone in a camera that’s small and powerful, but incredibly easy to use. Our goal is to forever change the way people take and experience pictures, and today marks our first major step.

Are you shocked right now? Amazing technology isn’t it? I bet you want to own one right now.

iPhone 4S vs Canon EOS 5D Mark II: 1080p Shootout

I know it’s pretty pointless to stack a mobile phone next to the mighty Canon EOS 5D, but even crazier things have happened. Apple stated on their iPhone 4S event that this is best camera currently available on any mobile device, you know, with video stabilization and 5 lenses and stuff. So, to find out how awesome the new iPhone 4S camera actually is, Robino Films, mounted it next to the EOS 5D Mark II and started filming.

The Canon 5D Mark II costs about $3000, whereas the iPhone 4S costs much much lesser. I don’t know if it’s right to perform such a test because both of them are in a completely different league, but the end results of this test made my jaws drop. There is some difference between the videos recorded by both these cameras, but it’s nothing much. Apart from warmer colors, slight blur and some scrolling black lines on the billboard, the iPhone 4S will certainly amaze you.

This test was conducted in a proper way, with both the cameras on similar settings. Well, sort of, because the iPhone 4S doesn’t really have that many settings as compared to the F-22 cockpit on the Canon.  Now, of course the 5D won, why won’t it? It’s got 21 Megapixels and some crazy optics, but it only beat the iPhone 4S by few frames. If you’re a wannabe movie director or a hard working filmmaker with limited funds, then you should try your hands on the iPhone 4S. But watch the videos below to clear all your doubts;

Now, this one is not a comparison. It’s just a short film shot by the professional film editor Benjamin Dowie and it is AMAZING.

iPhone 4 is Now the Most Used Camera in The World

It was only some months ago that we told you that the most used camera in the world comes from the iPhone. The usage has grown a lot since then, and now iPhone 4 has taken the crown. The Apple iPhone 4 is being called the most used and most popular camera in the world according to Flickr upload data.

Of course, we all know that the iPhone 4 camera quality is nothing when compared to a SLR camera, yet it’s one of the most popular. Why? Well, because  when people take pictures they like their friends and family to see it right away. Now that’s not possible with those SLR cameras, no internet access, damn!! This is where the iPhone has always been a step ahead, with instant web access so users can upload images taken right away.

It was predicted that the iPhone 4 will hit the top in just about a months time, but that wasn’t an accurate prediction. It certainly took the iPhone 4 more than a month to take the No.1 spot by dethroning the Nikon D90, Canon 5D Mark II, Canon Digital Rebel XSi and Canon REBEL T1i. That’s all the best cameras right there, following the iPhone 4 camera. No need to worry, you professional photographer, this is only the result of a photo upload comparison between all the cameras on Flickr. We know all about the secret photos stored in your external hard disk that you’d never want to upload.

It’s all about the convenience factor here, as the SLR cameras in the list have incredibly better lenses. Whereas the iPhone 4 costs less than all those cameras and is one of the most widely used cameras, not the best, but the most popular. There are better mobile cameras as well, but no one of them are being used as much as that of the iPhone 4.

All we have to do now(iPhone 4 users) is wait for the iPhone 5, hopefully with a better camera and keep the Flickr upload rate high.

Locate Your Stolen Camera Using StolenCameraFinder

When you read the title, some of you will go ‘Yeah right!’ and some will be like ‘Really? Wow’, but you won’t really know what it means unless you read the article. It sounds unrealistic, but it’s not, the application StolenCameraFinder will actually find your stolen or lost camera if it gets enough resources to look for it.

StolenCameraFinder

The StolenCameraFinder software is something out of the box as it’s not a software but rather a web based application that promises to perform a task that normal softwares won’t even try to. The web app is one very clever application that helps you find your stolen camera using previous pictures taken by it. Most cameras leave some information such as serial number, date, model of the camera etc when a picture is clicked. StolenCameraFinder uses this information, known as EXIF data, to search the internet for pictures that have been uploaded using the same camera.

Every day millions of pictures are uploaded to the internet, hence it is possible that the person who stole your camera does the same. If you’re lucky enough you might have your stolen camera in your hand soon enough.

How this web app works?

To get this working and hopefully find your stolen camera, you will have to visit the StolenCameraFinder website. Once you’re there, you’ll need to upload a photo that was previously taken using the Camera that was stolen or lost. Once uploaded, the web app searches its directory of stored serial numbers to match the ones from your picture. If a match is found, you can then report about your stolen camera and perhaps get re-united with it.

StolenCameraFinder Screenshot

Isn’t this a very interesting web app? I mean, I would surely use this to try my luck if my camera gets stolen or I somehow manage to lose it.

What do you think of this interesting little web app? Have you ever lost or had your Camera stolen? Do you know of any other such apps?
