Semitethered Jailbreak for iOS 5 Released [Updated]

Most of the users who’re on iOS 5 haven’t jailbroken their device yet, even those who had jailbroken before are thinking twice. Why? Right now, iOS 5 is pretty new and the awesome jailbreak developers have only managed to conjure a working tethered jailbreak for all devices except the iPad 2. So, obviously nobody would want to tethered jailbreak their iOS device.

An untethered jailbreak is however in development, as reported by iH8sn0w, but we have no time or date for the release or any updates on the work. Thus, a semitethered jailbreak seems like a better idea right now. If you haven’t heard of this term before, then let me tell you what it is. It’s somewhere in between an untethered jailbreak and a tethered jailbreak, it’s better than the latter, but comes with a catch.

Earlier today, Cydia developer, BigBoss released a semitethered jailbreak for iOS 5, which is now available for download from the BigBoss repo in Cydia. A semitethered jailbreak will let you reboot your device when away from your PC, you need not connect your iOS device to the computer every time you want to reboot. However, after rebooting, Cydia will not work, nor will any of the jailbroken apps or tweaks. Also, some of the stock iOS apps such as Safari and Mail will not work.

Now, that’s bad to an extent. But, it can be useful in certain scenarios, where you will need to reboot your iOS device, but aren’t close to your PC. You can get the Cydia package from the BigBoss repo by adding this to source: http://thebigboss.org/semitether.

Will you be performing a semitethered jailbreak on iOS 5?

UPDATE:  The semitether jailbreak for iOS 5 has been updated to fix certain bugs, here’s the list.

1) Much more stable with new mobile substrate
2) Can patch safari so it works in the non-jailbreak reboot mode
3) App to monitor the status of your semitether and reapply. Check after Cydia installs.

This means that you can run Safari and all those jailbroken Notification center widgets after performing a semitethered boot. Here’s a tutorial on how to semi-tether jailbreak your iOS 5 device.

Siri on iOS 5 Coming Soon

Some more interesting news regarding the Siri port to iPhone 4, well this is even better. Earlier, we had told you about a certain project that’s main goal is to make Siri, the iPhone 4S personal assistant, work on the iPhone 4. However, it was not very successfully since there was no way to connect to the Apple servers and Apple for sure wouldn’t let that happen. But, new reports and information has risen on another Siri port project that happens to work on any iDevice running iOS 5 and does connect to Apple’s servers, no problem.

Developer Jack (@Jackoplane ) has been working on this from quite some time and has now confirmed that Siri on iOS 5 will be available soon to everyone. When I say soon, I don’t mean next 2-3 days, it could be a week or even a month. Jack has managed to make Siri work on iOS 5 without any problems, lags or bugs, but he’s worried about the distribution part. He can’t obviously make it public as Apple is bound to take the tweak down. So, that’s why he’s working on a delivery method and has asked every one to wait.

Siri, is Apple’s greatest feat yet, it is even more magical than anything magic. You can say/ask a lot of things to Siri and it will reply as though it was another human being. It has a sense of humor, a slight attitude and respect. It is currently the most advanced Voice recognition software on the planet, but there are alternatives and apps for Android that work similar to this.

Running Siri on iOS 5 is pretty easy, according to Jack, but we are still not sure if it will work on all iOS 5 devices. This tweak needs Cydia and that means that you’ll have to JAILBREAK your device to have this working. You can see a screenshot of Siri working on iPhone 4 below and in the background you can also see the Cydia icon.

How many of you want Siri on your iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch, iPad and iPad 2? This could also be a hoax. We’ll find out soon.

You Could iMessage Your iChat Contacts in the near Future

Apple unveiled it’s very own instant messaging service called iMessages during the iOS 5 keynote. It’s more or less like BlackBerry Messenger, as you can only text, share photos etc with your iPhone buddies only. That is the only limitation with iMessage, apart from the fact that it will only work on iOS 5. What use could it be if you couldn’t text someone who’s not got an iPhone or an iPod Touch or the iPad.

There’s some good news for Apple users now or in the near future at least. According to a report by Mac Rumors based on findings of peculiar code in Mac OS X Lions version of iChat, which could mean that iMessages will also be available on them. Being able to text or share images, videos with your Mac friends and vice versa is pretty cool and useful. Also the fact that you don’t have to pay anything to share them is delighting. You cannot text your PC friends using WhatsApp or BBM or other free SMS services. You can use Google Talk of course, but that’s a completely different thing.

Mac OS X’s iChat messenger client is used by everyone who owns a Mac, it’s simple and works with almost every chat service. How awesome would it be if you could iMessage your iChat friends. A certain developer, while snooping around the latest version of iChat being shipped with Mac OS X Lion, found some interesting lines of code.

“@interface IMMessage : NSObject
{
IMHandle *_sender;
IMHandle *_subject;
NSAttributedString *_text;
NSString *_plainBody;
NSDate *_time;
NSDate *_timeDelivered;
NSDate *_timeRead;”

iChat has nothing to do with Timedelivered and timeRead, that is something related to iMessages. So could this mean that iChat will soon be getting some iMessage love too? Well, only timeComingSoon will tell.

Apple Planning to Launch Gesture-based Lock Screen for iOS Devices just like Android Phones

iPhone users have always been boasting about the innovative lock screen that is incorporated in these phones. I am always fascinated by this lock screen feature of iPhone but recently I saw an Android powered phone of a friend and was fascinate by its lock screen feature because it was having virtual dots, like a combination on a safe that you have to complete in order to unlock your phone.

So Apple got the idea and according to some inside resources the Cupertino-based tech giant has been working on a totally new gesture-based lock  screen for all of their iOS devices. With this gesture-based lock screen available on iDevices, users will need to setup a dedicated pattern and while unlocking they have to input that same particular pattern. It means that users will get free from the hassle of setting up a password or a 4-digit code to lock their iOS devices effectively.

Apple has already dished out this new lock screen for their employees “Apple Connect” application. Till now it is not clear that whether Apple will make this new feature available for normal iOS device users or not.

Moreover, according to some sources Apple is also planning to bring this gesture-based locks to their latest mobile payment systems on the various EasyPay Machines. One more concern is that this Android like lock screen patents are with Google so this feature might not make its way for common iOS devices users. Do let us know in comments that whether you will like this gesture-based lock screen for your iOS devices or not.
