How to Use iPhone as HotSpot & Connect to Laptop for Internet

This guide will show you how to enable and use Personal Hotspot on iPhone. This feature is available on all models of iPhone & I’m testing this with iPhone 6.

In case if you don’t know about what hotspot can do for you. Let me quickly explain it:

With iPhone hotspot feature you can use your mobile internet on your laptop or other devices. Your iPhone will work as a Wi-fi device & use your mobile internet. This is handy when you are traveling, or you need backup internet.

You can only enable mobile hotspot on your iPhone if your carrier allows tethering. If it does, you are in luck.

Earlier iPhone had the Internet tethering feature, but it could only be used via USB or Bluetooth therefore limiting the usage on laptops and desktop computers. Now with the addition of wi-fi hotspot, you can share the internet with other devices too like iPod Touch, iPad, and other smartphones.

How to turn hotspot on iPhone:

To use Personal Hotspot feature on iPhone, the first thing you need to ensure is your phone has mobile data enabled. If you are currently connected to Wi-fi, disable it & also disable Bluetooth.

Once done, go to iPhone Settings > Personal hotspot and tap on the switch to turn it On. You can use the default password for hotspot security, or you can set up a custom password. Enter your password and tap on Done.

You will then be asked how do you want to enable the mobile hotspot. Usually, I go for Wi-fi and USB only. It will turn on all the radios that are turned on at the moment and also allow you to turn on the ones that are off if desired.

You can now connect any device by selecting the wi-fi network we created above. It will have the same name as your iPhone.

Once any device connects to your personal hotspot, the status bar on your iPhone will turn blue. It will also show the number of devices connected. You can connect a maximum of five devices.

The hotspot will automatically turn off after staying idle for more than an hour. This will save your iPhone battery from draining. After you have enabled Personal Hotspot once, it will appear on the first page of Settings app, and you won’t have to travel through multiple panes to enable or disable it.

If you have any other questions related to Personal Hotspot or iPhone feel free to ask us via comments.

Fix: Hash Sum Mismatch Cydia Error While Installing Installous 5

Hash Sum MismatchEarlier we talked about Installous 5, which has one of the major feature now (Download files via torrent), but many users faced issues while installing Installous 5. Earlier, an update was not showing in my jailbroken iPhone 4 and later when Installous 5 update was visible, on Installing I was getting this error : Hash sum mismatch error. Here are some of the workaround to fix this issue.

2 Ways to fix Hash sum Mismatch error in Cydia:

If you getting this error for the first time, I suggest you to retry or try downloading any other app in Cydia and see if it works. Else, here are some of the possible solutions which you can try.

Reboot:

This is the basic step and this worked fine for me. I closed all the apps, restarted my iPhone and tried updating to Installous5 and it worked for me. Even in forums, many users reported the same and it’s working for them without any issue.

Use Alternate source:

Usually we use http://cydia.hackulo.us to install Installous, but you can also try alternate cydia sources like SinfuliPhonerepo. here is the repo address: http://sinfuliphonerepo.com

simply go to Cydia > Sources > Edit > Add and add the following source and then search Installous 5 under it, and install. I tried this method in iPad 2, and it worked for me.

Reinstall Installous:

Another method is to delete installous and remove it’s source and re-add it. This is one method, which I have not tried but many users reported it worked for them.

I tried the first 2 fix for fixing Hash sum error in Cydia and it worked for me. Last but not the least, if nothing works for you: You can start from scratch by re-jailbreaking your phone and installing Installous on fresh device.  Though, I suggest to use this only, when nothing works for you.

Here are few more fixes, which are suggested by users in forum:

Reset Network settings:

You can try resetting your network settings in iPhone or iPad and it may work. Also, reboot your modem once.

Reload Cydia:

On the cydia homepage, reload it to update it and then try and see is you still getting “hash sum mismatch error“.

I tried the torrent feature and for now, there are very few apps with magnet link available, but in coming days we can expect way more. Anyways, do let me know which solution worked for you and if any of these worked (It should), don’t forget to share this post on Facebook and Google plus.

On your iPad or iPhone, run the client app and add your server and tap it. The client app will detect and connect to the server automatically by Bonjour service. If sometimes it can’t find the Bonjour connection information, you need to manually input the server address which is shown on the server or close the firewall for a try. What Are The Difference Between DFU and Recovery Mode

This tutorial tells you the basic difference between iPhone’s DFU and Recovery modes and what mode is used for what purpose. If you already know the difference between the two modes and looking for just the instructions on how to put iPhone into the two modes read:

Difference Between DFU and Recovery Mode:

What are these modes for and why should I know about them?

If you are a new iPhone user or don’t care about jailbreaking chances are that you might have never come across these two modes and won’t need to in the future either. But if you use Cydia or custom IPSW firmware on your iPhone or other iOS devices you will definitely come across this.

DFU stands for Device Firmware Update. Both of the modes can be entered by pressing a particular series of buttons on your iPhone. They help you update or install firmware when the normal iTunes method fails. Here are some situations when you might need to use these modes.

  • Reset iPhone if your forgot Passcode
  • Downgrade Firmware version
  • Install beta iOS Firmware
  • When iTunes returns errors like 1013, 1603 etc.

iPhone Recovery mode vs DFU mode:

iPhone Recovery Mode:

Recovery Mode boots your iPhone and stops at the Connect to iTunes screen. You can use it to install the latest firmware but not downgrade. You can click on Restore in iTunes to let iTunes download firmware and install. Alternatively, you can download firmware from here and press Alt + Restore(Shift + Restore on Windows) to browse for firmware manually.

iPhone Recovery Mode

The recovery mode and iTunes will prevent you from restoring to older firmware than the current firmware. You will keep getting error in iTunes every time you try doing it. This is because iPhone has already booted and knows the current firmware version.

iPhone DFU Mode:

DFU mode on the other hand does not fully start up the iPhone or iPod Touch. The screen remains off and appears as if your iPhone is turned off but it will be recognized in iTunes and be ready for restoring to any firmware. Since, the firmware is not booted you can downgrade iPhone to previous versions or even custom firmwares with Cydia and other packages created from jailbreak tools like PwnageTool.

How to Get iPhone SMS Delivery Report

When you send a text message to someone, you always want to know if it was delivered to them or not. If you’re using an iPhone, the stock SMS app won’t give you any such delivery notifications, except on the new iMessage. There are third party apps like BiteSMS that do provide extra features and a delivery notification as well, but wouldn’t it be nice if the original SMS app had it. Well, if you’re using a jailbroken iPhone, then you’re in luck, because there’s a tweak to make that happen.

iphone sms delivery report

How to Get iPhone SMS Delivery Report

SMSConfirmation is a Cydia tweak for jailbroken iPhones that brings the much needed iPhone SMS delivery report to the stock Message app. Normally, all the other mobile operating systems do provide the option of whether you want to get the delivery notification. The notifications are quite useful, as it lets you know if the recipient has received your text or not, specially if you’re in a area where this is low network coverage. Times like those, SMS delivery notifications on the iPhone could be pretty helpful.

When you send a text message, a popup appears saying Message sent, which means that your text has been delivered to the recipient. Once the tweak is installed on your iOS device, it will show you the notification pop-up even if you navigate away from the Message app. However, it doesn’t utilize the new iOS 5 notification center features, so no banner/lockscreen notifications. All you get is a popup in the form of the older iOS notifications, which is still not bad.

The tweak is available for free from ModMyi repo in Cydia or you could just perform a search to find it. Once it’s installed, you’ll have to respring your device to be able to receive the notifications and there are no settings for the tweak. If you don’t like it, and want to get rid of it, then all you have to do is head over to Cydia and uninstall the tweak.

Try this tweak and let us know if it worked for you and also if it’s useful. iPhone SMS delivery report is something that we’ve all been wanting to have on our devices from a long time.

How to Enable Hidden Panorama Mode in iOS 5 [Jailbroken]

Looks like at least two new hidden features have been unearthed in the latest iOS 5, and they’re pretty useful. I’m sure all of you must’ve heard of Panorama, a mode that lets you take wider pictures in a single shot. There are many apps out there that you could use to take Panoramic pictures from your iOS devices camera, but imagine a built in feature. Yes, there’s a hidden Panorama mode in the iOS 5 camera app.

How to Enable hidden Panorama Mode in iOS 5

The hidden Panorama mode in iOS 5 lets you take wider pictures and uses the Gyroscope in iPhone 4 and iPad 2 to tell you if your sweeping motion is balanced. It works pretty good for a stock and hidden camera feature and although it doesn’t go all the way to 360 degrees, it covers most of the view. It’s a useful feature then, and here’s how you can get it enabled on your jailbroken iOS 5 device. For now, this only applies to the iPhone 4 and the the iPad 2, because only those come with a gyroscope. There are two ways to enable panorama mode in iOS 5, and below are both of them:

Using iFile to Edit plist Files on iPhone

  • Launch Cydia and install iFile.
  • Open iFile and navigate to var/mobile/Libraries/Preferences and look for the string com.apple.mobileslideshow.plist.
  • Open com.apple.mobileslideshow.plist using the Property List Viewer.
  • Now click on the + button located at the bottom to Add Item.
  • Use the name as EnableFirebreak and the Type as Boolean. Create the new item.
  • Go back and you should now see a toggle to switch on/off EnableFirebreak.
  • Turn it on, exit iFile and respring your device.
  • Open the camera app and you should see Panorama Mode in the Options menu.
That is one way of doing it. Now let me tell you about the second method, which is much simpler and easier for people who don’t like to play with plist files. It involves installing a Cydia tweak called Firebreak.  This tweak is available in the Big Boss repo for free, alternatively, you could also search for it on Cydia and try the Panorama mode out.
Have you unearthed the hidden panorama mode in iOS 5? Do check it out and let us know if it’s going to help you out on your adventures.
