Android Notifier : Get Android Notifications on Desktop

Suppose you’re away from your phone, playing a game or working in front of your PC and you get an important call or a text from your close ones, you wouldn’t want to miss it right? During circumstances like this, wouldn’t it be useful if you received the notifications on your desktop, let it be a call or a text. If you’re an Android user, we’ve got a free app for you that will do all the exchanging of notifications between your phone and the desktop PC for you. It’s called Android Notifier or Remote Notifier, both are the same.

Android Notifier

Use Android Notifier for Getting Notification on Windows Desktop:

Android Notifier is a free app that helps you receive your SMS, Call and Battery notifications on your desktop PC over WiFi or Bluetooth. You install the app on your mobile device, then you download a corresponding app for your Mac, Windows or Linux PC. There is a little bit of setting up to do, but that does not involve any head explosions. All you have to do is set up an active link between your Android phone and the PC over a WiFi connection or Bluetooth.

Once the desktop application is installed, you’ll need run it and give in certain details on what notifications to get and how. It’s pretty easy, like I said before. Remember, you should already have the Android notifier app installed on your mobile and it should be on the same WiFi network as your PC. Reboot your PC and the mobile device and check the option to Start the service at boot.

Now, you should be able to get all your SMS, Call and Battery notifications right on your Desktop in a popup window. If you have Growl installed on your Mac or Windows, then you can select Growl to display these notifications. The best thing about this app is that it’s available on Mac, Windows and Linux, is easy to setup and works like a charm. Only problem, it doesn’t tell you the contact name, just displays the number, so if you’re bad at remembering phone numbers, then this isn’t a very good idea for you.

You can download the Android app and Desktop app for Android Notifier from here. Try this out and see how it works for you.

DoubleTwist AirSync : AirPlay for Android Devices

DoubleTwist Airsync first began as an iTunes alternative for everyone, but now has transformed in to an Android app that currently brings Apple’s AirPlay extension to your favorite Android devices. Previously, when DoubleTwist was launched it did not have this new feature that enables AirPlay features to be used on your Android phone, but only had the ability to sync your iTunes playlist, videos, photos to your device. Recenlty, we also told you about Shairport4w, the AirPlay for Windows.

You can also use the updated version of DoubleTwist to stream music on to Windows Media Player 12, sync just one song or video, sync everything, checked items all with the tap of a button. The app interface is very simple and easy to understand.

AirSync contains two inbuilt features known as ‘Twist to’ and AirTwist that help DoubleTwist in performing some of the above mentioned tasks. Streaming music to an Apple TV, Mac, AirPlay enabled device or Windows PC requires ‘Twist to’ and streaming to an X-Box 360 or PlayStation 3 requires AirTwist. Those are the main features of the new and updated DoubleTwist AirSync.

Top 3 Android App Review Sites

Android marketplace is no doubt booming but you will be surprised to see that you won’t be able to find quality Android Apps reviewing websites if compared with iOS ones. This lack of Android app reviewing portals is mainly because of the fact that most of the apps on Android marketplace are free, meaning that users can try out for themselves instead of reading the reviews. But if you happen to stumble upon a feature-rich Android app with a certain price tag then you will prefer to read some reviews before spending your dough. So today I am highlighting 3 pretty useful online resources for reviews of Android Apps:

Useful Android App Review Sites

Android AppStorm

Reviews Android.AppStorm

Part of AppStorm network, Android AppStorm is a very useful blog that give users with some quality contents that include stuff like general information about Android and How To’s.

The thing that I liked about it is that the reviews of all these apps are detailed having loads of photo illustrating in detail the working. The website is having user friendly interface and it also rounds-up best apps from categories.

Android Tapp

As many as 2-3 reviews are uploaded daily offering quite a deep insight of the app. Apart from that some of the reviews also have video footings that show how the apps work. Android Tapp also offers browsing through the categories.

Undelete app can recover deleted files on Android devices, both from the external and internal storage. It’s a very useful app for Android users, but since this is a beta, it may not work on all devices. However, many devices running Android 2.1 and above have shown good signs, but don’t blame us if it doesn’t work on your device. Also, don’t expect the app to recover corrupted data, because it can’t, also don’t expect 100 percent positive results all the time.

Listed below are the official specifications of this app:

Duke Nukem for Android, Download Now

Duke Nukem is a legendary game! If you are a geek or a gamer or were at one point of time, then you definitely must have played this game. This was one of the first FPS games to be played by millions of people when no one cared about graphics or visuals. If you remember then, this game has a really weird story. Aliens have attacked the city of Los Angeles and are stealing the girls for breeding, the only person who can stop them is Duke. Now, Duke Nukem 3D, after it’s PC launch earlier this year, is finally available for download on the Android Market.

Trust us when we say that this a weird game, because there isn’t a game like this since it’s launch in early 90’s. The developers on the game Machineworks Northwest had this to say about the game.

If you’ve never played a Duke game, this is your chance to see why he’s been a fan favorite since 1991, with over 18 original Duke Nukem games since that time. Duke Nukem is not the typical faceless hero — he’s an in-your-face hero who has a personality that doesn’t quit. Yes, it’s a B-movie plot, but that’s what makes it fun!

If you’re an Android phone user and love to play games on your device, then you should definitely download this. It doesn’t have amazing graphics as such, but the gameplay is pretty awesome and you’ll have a laugh while playing it. As you can see in the screenshots above, the game is pretty awesome. It is not free though, as you’ll have to produce at least $0.99 to purchase this game. Also, it comes with only Episode 1, thus you’ll have make in-app purchases to buy the extra episodes, which again are for $0.99 each. So, overall, if you don’t have the money, don’t buy it, but if you do, then you most certainly should.

How to Install Android Ice Cream Sandwich on Nexus S

Google announced the latest iteration of Android, the Ice Cream Sandwich at the Samsung and Google Unpacked event last week. They also announced the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, the first ever phone to come with Android 4.0. However, the SDK was released to developers, since it’s an open source OS, and was right away ported to an old Google Nexus One. The Nexus S will be getting the Ice Cream Sandwich and it has been confirmed, but the Nexus One has been pushed aside.

In case you happen to own a Google Nexus S and can’t wait to try out Android Ice Cream Sandwich, this post will definitely help you. Also, if you can’t wait till the official release of Ice Cream Sandwich for the Nexus S, then you should definitely give this a try as it can be used for daily usage. Remember, there will be bugs as this is a direct port of the SDK and users with heart conditions shouldn’t try this.

Before we begin, the first step to a successful Custom ROM installation is to backup your device, all the data that you need should be backed up. This process is going to erase and Factory reset your Nexus S, but will also let you experience and show-off Android 4.0. You also need to own a Google Nexus S that must be rooted, have an unlocked bootloader and have Clockwork Mod Recovery installed. If you haven’t done any of that, you can do so by download and running this batch.exe file, while your device is connected to your Windows PC and USB debugging is turned off. Make sure you run the file in administrator mode. Once you’ve done that, your Nexus S will be rooted, have an unlocked bootloader and CWM recovery ready.

  • Download the latest build of Ice Cream Sandwich for Nexus S from here.
  • Copy/Paste the downloaded zip file to the root of internal storage of your device.
  • Turn of your device and hold the Volume Up button with the Power button to enter CWM Recovery mode.
  • Select Wipe Data/Factory Reset, Wipe Cache, Wipe Dalvik and finally “Install zip from sdcard”.
  • Select choose zip from sdcard and scroll down to the zip file that you copied and hit the Power button.
  • The installation will start and your phone will reboot to Ice Cream Sandwich
  • Enjoy!!
That’s it. You’ll now be running Ice Cream Sandwich. It may be a little slow after the first boot, so you will have to reboot once more to make it run smoothly. Some apps may crash for the first time, but they should be alright later on. Face Unlock and NFC may not work properly.
Do try this out and let us know how you find Ice Cream Sandwich on Nexus S.

Send SMS with your Voice using Text by Voice for Android

Since the announcement of the iPhone 4S and Siri, there have been many attempts to bring out similar apps for other devices. However, most of them have failed and the ones that worked, are not so good overall. We’ve already talked about certain Siri alternatives for iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and also for Android devices. Yet, new apps are still trying to be the next Siri. This one isnt’ like Siri, nor does it respond to your witty questions, but it does something quite useful.

Text by Voice is a free Android app that lets you Send text messages using your voice and also reads out incoming text messages out loud. It’s pretty useful when you’re driving or don’t want to use the keyboard to send a text message. Although, this is the only thing that this app can do, it’s actually very good at it. Unlike other apps that claim to do it all, this one is awesome at just this, sending and reading text messages.

Text by Voice allows you to safely text while you drive entirely through voice. There’s no need to touch or look at the screen at all. Text by Voice will automatically read incoming text messages aloud and give you a chance to respond. You can also set an auto responder for incoming text messages, and have Text by Voice start automatically when you start driving. Text by Voice lets you compose texts on the fly. It runs in the background so you can use other apps at the same time. Drive more safely with Text by Voice.

It’s definitely not a Siri replacement or alternative, but it works. Watch the demonstration video after the break.

You can download Text by Voice from the Android Market.

Try it out and let us know how it worked for you. If you haven’t tried it out yet, then you can do so once you’re in the hospital recovering from an accident caused by texting and driving.

Speaktoit: The Perfect Siri Alternative for Android

Siri, the personal assistant on the iPhone 4S is the next big development in mobile technology. We have to agree to that, but it’s not limited to the iPhone 4S alone. I recently posted on how the iPhone 4 can also run the elusive personal assistant and I also gave some Siri alternatives for the iPhone 3GS and 4. Of course, Android users may have been wondering when they’re going to get something as awesome as Siri, well, they already have.

Speaktoit is an Android app that works exactly like Siri, if not better, and can understand what you say to it. It’s also really smart and has an avatar or a face. This app is the best Siri alternative for Android, and I’m sure it’ll make all you guys happy. The personal assistant works really well, which you can see in a video later on. For now, let’s talk about what Speaktoit is and can do.

The Speaktoit Assistant is a virtual buddy for your smartphone that answers questions in natural language, performs tasks, and notifies you about important events. The Assistant saves you time and makes communication with gadgets and web services easier and less stressful.

That should answer most of your questions, but I’m sure it doesn’t. Siri has taken the mobile market by storm and it’s certainly going to revolutionize how we use our mobile device, but should Android users be left behind? No. Hence, if you happen to be one, then head over to the Android Market and download Speaktoit right now. It’s a free app. And how is it similar to Siri?

  • You can have a conversation with Speaktoit in your natural voice. And most probably it’ll understand.
  • You can ask it to send emails, texts, look up information, post to Twitter, check you in places, update your Facebook, find news, look up traffic, look up weather, call people, take notes, add things to your calendar, translate foreign languages, help you find nearby places like bars and much much more.
  • You can add a custom Avatar or choose from the ones provided. It’s like talking to a person, only it’s a cartoon character and has a robotic voice, but whatever. It’s still pretty awesome.
  • Changes and improvements keep happening based on user suggestions.
Check out the demo video now;

Speaktoit app will soon be available for iOS and Blackberry too, so if you’ve been looking for a Siri alternative, this is the best one out there, yet. You can download Speaktoit for Android from the Android Market.

Run Android Apps in Windows with BlueStacks App Player

There are more than 200,000 apps available on the Android market, but it’s not like you can try all of them on your mobile phone can you? Well, what if you could try it on your Windows PC. Yup, you’ve heard of the famous Angry Birds game being made to run on Windows, well the same thing has happened again.

BluesStacks is a Windows software that can run any Android app on your PC in full screen mode, can sync apps from your Android phone to PC and it works really really smooth as well. The software has been under development since almost 6 months now, and yet it’s still in Alpha.

So, don’t panic if apps crash when you’re in an intense gaming situation. The best part, it’s all free. Yes, you can install up to 26 Android apps at once and use them, but not more than that. You’ll have to uninstall and delete a few to add new ones!! That’s a downer, but it won’t be same for long. According to the BlueStacks team;

With 56-percent of smartphone consumers purchasing an Android device in the last three months[1], it’s apparent that Android is rapidly becoming a preferred operating system. The BlueStacks App Player now gives users one-click access to their favorite Android apps right on their Windows PC. Both Windows and Android users stand to benefit greatly from this capability.

Well, I for one, totally agree with what they have to say and I’m already using the App Player to it’s core. It’s amazing. If you liked a game on your mobile device, but it did not work so well on it, then you can download it on your PC using BlueStacks App Player. The simplest way to run Android apps in Windows. Check out this video and be stunned.

You can download BlueStacks App Player right away and try out your favorite Android apps in Windows. Sadly, this is not available on Mac, but it will be soon.
