India First to Ban .xxx Domain

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), recently approved the creation of a “.xxx” domain for pornographic websites and the first .xxx domains will start appearing in the next few months. But India is strictly opposed to this and has become the first country to declare its offensive against the .xxx domain and will block URLs ending with .xxx as soon as the domain registrars start selling them.

India along with countries from the Middle East and Indonesia first opposed the grant of the .xxx domain by ICANN. India is geared up to block the whole domain as it goes against its IT laws. Distribution of pornography is illegal in India and carries a prison sentence of upto 5 years but its consumption is not illegal. Its likely that more countries will follow India’s lead after India blocks .xxx domain.

TechSpot reports that In order to register a new .xxx domain, porn sites have to pass an application process that’s designed to ensure that their site does not engage in fraud, child pornography, nor offer up malware to users. A key reason the porn industry opposes the new TLD is that it adds additional costs: sites have to register and pay for additional .xxx domain names to avoid having their brands hijacked.

Pornographers and free speech activists are voicing concerns that the .xxx suffix will allow authorities to  find and block out adult content more easily. It will also cost pornographers more money to register new .xxx domains to to ensure their brands do not get hijacked.

We think this is a good initiative on part of India’s governance to block all .xxx domains the country. With the state of laws in the country there’s very little monitoring on usage patterns and every school going kid has access to the porn on the internet. But stricter cyber laws has ensured that children going to cyber cafe’s will be much safer against porn now than a few years ago.

We, CallingAllGeeks team thinks that this is a good initiative by India. We hope that any of you parents’ reading our blog should be more cautious with your children using internet and take measures to keep them safe from adult content.

8 Apple iPad 2 Bugs, Customer Complaints and Defects

When you buy any electronic device you are prone to some issue or the other. Even a manufacturer such as Apple is not exempted from such teething issues. No matter how well a product is designed and manufactured, the risk of issues cropping up with the device exists. The Cupertino based Apple recently launched its latest iteration of its tablet device which has been a storm in the tablet market. But now users have been reporting of several problems with their iPad 2. If you were looking for a solution or wondering which issues you must look out for on your iPad we have compiled the list of the most common problems noted with the new iPad.

FaceTime Freeze

Apple’s support is filled with a number of complaints regarding FaceTime video chat freezing sometimes. Users are reporting how the camera was working fine but later on shows a still image from the previous session. Restarting the iPad seems to resolve this minor glitch and/or restoring the device to its original settings.

Backlight Bleeding

This is the most common and widely reported issue with the new iPad 2. This problem existed on the original iPad as well. CultofMac has well documented this problem. There is no solution to the problem as of now. This problem is usually found while watching a video with a dark background. Users have reported to have found their LCD screen showing extra light on the sides and blotches of light appearing near the Home button of the iDevice. We suggest you to hold on to your iPad 2 if your device suffers from backlight bleeding until Apple has found a solution to this problem. Then you can return to the nearby Apple store and exchange your device for one that works perfectly. The warranty after all lasts a whole year.

iPad 2 Yellow Botches

According to MacRumors, the yellow botches on the iPad 2 screens are resulting from the iPads being shipped too early before their internal bonding glue has had time to dry. The solution is to wait for a few days until the glue dries off. This problem was reported by iPhone 4 users as well.

MacRumor says: Apple is using a bonding agent called Organofunctional Silane Z-6011 to bond the layers of glass. They are shipping it too early, rather before the completion of the evaporation process.

iPad 2 Dead Pixels

Dead pixels seem to be the most common problems on newly shipped iPad units. 9to5Mac reports that users have gone through as many as four iPads and the problem persists. We think a number of units from the initial batch might have this problem. Users please note that the problem is permanent.

iPad 2 16GB Wi-Fi Issues

The Wi-Fi only iPad 2 16GB is the cheapest iPad 2 available ($499). Users have reported that the Wi-Fi only works for a short period of time, then it stops. To get it working again, a user reports that he had to disable and enable it. Other users are reporting that the iPad has trouble finding a Wi-Fi hotspot and sticking to it. There is no solution to this problem so far.

iPad 2 Speaker woes

Here’s a iPad user who’s speaker doesn’t work. Have you faced a similar problem? Watch the video to see the issue faced by the YouTube video uploader.

iPad 2 Faulty Camera

CultofMac reports a issue with the iPad 2 Camera. Watch the video.

iPad 2 Muffled Microphones

According to iLounge, they have discovered that iPad2 Wi-Fi and 3G models show microphone differences.

They say that the Wi-Fi model offers markedly cleaner audio than that of the 3G, which sounds slightly muffled and echo-prone as a result.Curiously, we found the GSM 3G model’s audio to be slightly preferable to that of the CDMA model, which seemed to suffer the issues more severely. The problem is particularly evident when the iPad’s screen is facing the user, as is the case when using FaceTime and a great many other apps; it is unclear whether Apple will make any modifications to the devices’ microphones mid-production to help minimize the differences.

Until the problem is fixed at Manufacturing we suggest that iPad users may want to face their mics while using it.

This is quite a list of issues with the new iPad 2. If any of you reading this article have faced this with your iPads please write to us and tell us in the comments.

Video: iPad2 Flex Test

iPhone Repair Experts from iFixyouri have made a video showcasing the durability and strength of iPad 2’s glass which as per 9to5Mac is thinner by 27% over it’s predecessor iPad 1. They flex the glass on both iPad to test strenght of the glass. iPad 2 holds up very well and doesn’t break under stress, unless really pushed too far. Check the video and see for yourself.

Before you watch it, iPad users please don’t try this with your precious iPads.

The iPad 2 seems to be as strong as the iPad but has much higher flexing tolerances. But real world situations would involve lower chances of being damaged from flexing and chances of it from being dropped on it’s corners and breaking are much higher. A series of tests where the iPad 2 is dropped from a height with different loads may have yielded more realistic results.

This tests really puts “thinner is weaker” theory to rest. With the quality of Apple products being nothing short of ‘top notch’ one can expect nothing less than an ‘awesome quality product’ from Apple every time. It would’ve been wiser to conduct a series of tests where items of varying sizes and weights were dropped on the iPad 2. No one generally, accidentally bends their iPads and damages it. Therefore we still feel that this test is half baked. It could’ve been done in a better way.

This time around, the glass on the new iPads are not manufactured by Corning, it’s made by a Japanese company – Asahi Glass. This new glass is apparently stronger than the ones found on the original iPad.

Suffice to say iPad 2 owners can rest easy, considering iPad 2 glass is indeed stronger and durable and apparently ‘iFixyouri’ conducted multiple drop tests at their office in Boston and there wasn’t a instance where the iPad 2’s glass broke under impact.
