Zune HD Officially Killed by Microsoft; Apple Tremors?

If you happen to be a music enthusiast and like to listen to new music, then you must have a music player tucked away in your pocket. Almost 60 percent chances are that it’s going to be an Apple music player, if not, it could be a Sony, Philips, Cowon or some other. There’s a very small chance that’s it going be one of Microsoft’s Zune player. And, for the same reason, Microsoft has finally given official word that all Zune products are henceforth discontinued.

Oh, and guess what? The Apple iPhone event is just about to begin. A coincidence that Microsoft all of a sudden decided to kill Zune products? I mean, it was reported earlier that Microsoft will be going to halt production, but there was not much information on when or why. Here’s the official statement on Microsoft’s Zune page;

We recently announced that, going forward, Windows Phone will be the focus of our mobile music and video strategy, and that we will no longer be producing Zune players. So what does this mean for our current Zune users? Absolutely nothing. Your device will continue to work with Zune services just as it does today. And we will continue to honor the warranties of all devices for both current owners and those who buy our very last devices. Customer service has been, and will remain a top priority for us.

As the statement says, users who already have bought or have ordered new Zune HD players, will be eligible for warranty and repair, but only till stocks last. The Zune software is not going to be affected for any user and more importance will be given to the budding operating system, Windows Phone 7.

Are you Zune HD owner? What are your thoughts on this move by Microsoft? That too on the day Apple is releasing a new iPhone.
