What’s New in iOS 5: WWDC 2011

We did not get to watch the Apple WWDC 2011 Live stream yet. So here we go with all that’s new in iOS 5. The opening line “200 new features, 1500 new API’s !!

Notification center, it’s not so good. It’s more like where all the notifications are placed at a single place. If you have used mobile notifier, you might not be amused. Though iOS 5 default mobile notifier is smart and you can directly tap into conversation view, when you click on message view. You can also get stock and weather updates at top. In short they have managed to make most out of lock screen and they have also taken care of people demand for android like widget feature.

News Stand:

Apple announced a new book store called the News Stand wherein you can grab all the periodicals, magazines and newspapers and read them directly. You can also download all your magazines, if you’re subscribed to it and then read them later. This is an app that is pretty much just like the iBooks, but only for your subscribed magazines and newspapers.

Twitter Integration:

As everyone was anticipating, Apple announced the deep integration of Twitter into iOS 5. This deep integration will allow single sign on for twitter. Twitter integrated with iPhone Camera, Safari, Youtube and maps. Another cool feature is you can grab contact photos from twitter. So this is indeed deep integration of Twitter on iOS5.

iOS 5 bring Safari reader which looks like instapaper. It’s a new button at safari address bar. This feature will let you quickly share content with your friends via email and provides distraction free writing. New safari will also have tabbed browsing. Just for the info, iOS covers 64% of mobile browsing.

Reminder will make your time-management easy. More over it’s right to call it smart reminder as it also uses the “geo-fence” to remind you. For example, you can set reminder as remind me to call my mom when I leave college today.

Those who are already waiting for iPhone 5, must be looking forward to an upgraded version of iPhone camera. iOS 5 will make it easier to quickly access iPhone camera. Double tap home button, lock screen shortcut are two new ways you can access camera on your iOS 5 device. iOS 5 camera will have red-eye reduction, crop and rotate feature, photo editing, and auto enhance function.

iOS 5 Mail:

iOS 5 mail brings some new features like draggable addresses, rick text formatting, control indentation, supports S/MIME.

PC Free:

I believe this is by far the best feature that iOS 5 is going to have. Now you don’t need iTunes to activate your device. Also you need not need to connect to iTunes for software updates. iOS 5 got over the AIR update. So you can directly update software from your iOS devices.

Game Center:

If you are an Apple fan boy, I’m sure you know about Game center. We also shared some interesting Game center games. Game center has crossed 50 million unique users. in iOS 5 profiling of user is enhanced. You can now add photos/avatars. You can directly purchase and download games from Game center.

Here is something amazing and unexpected feature that iOS 5 is going to get. iMessage is like blackberry messenger for iPhone which will let you send text messages, photos, contacts, videos and also allows group messaging. It also shows typing indication along with read receipt confirmation. This might bring an end to popular iPhone messaging app “Whatsapp“. Using iMessage, you can interact between any iOS device. Notification of iMessage is like mobile notifier notification, as we discussed above.

iOS 5 got almost 200 new features and apart from above, it also got Wi-Fi sync to iTunes, Mirror iPod2 to TV wirelessly, multi-tasking gestures.

Another good news is iOS 5 is going to support iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPad & iPad 2, 3rd & 4Th generation of iPod touch. Probably sad news for iPhone 3G users. We will be updating about all 200 iOS 5 feature soon. Stay tuned to CallingAllGeeks.. You can join us on Facebook, Twitter.
