What is RSS Feed

A lot of my friends have asked me What is an RSS Feeds? Having been confronted by the inconspicuous little Orange icon most feel intimidated. According to Wiki – RSS is a family of Web feed formats used to publish frequently updated works—such as blog entries, news headlines, audio, and video—in a standardized format.

To put it simply RSS helps you stay updated with the latest content from your favourite Blogs. RSS stands for (Really Simple Syndication), you can subscribe to CallingAllGeeks by RSS too!

So, How Does RSS provide you with updated content everytime? RSS Aggregators like FeedDemon(offline), Google Reader(online) enable you to keep track of your subscriptions and manage them. I use Google Reader to stay in contact with the blogosphere. Firefox and InternetExplorer also have the functionality to bookmark your feeds sparing you the time to hunt for other readers although they do not have much to offer when compared to the Aggregators mentioned above, you can pretty much live with it.

RSS can be accessed as-Is or can be served as an email which lands in your inbox whenever you have updates. Its a convinient tool, not only does it provide a Standard format for all your RSS content but also saves you bandwidth as you get only the RSS Feed and no complex Web Design in your mail.

I’ve implemented RSS in the following ways here at CallingAllGeeks :

  • Direct RSS Feed – The little Orange Icon you see in the Sidebar and The footer
  • Email Subscriptions – You receive Weekly updates straight in your inbox (Sidebar)
  • SMS Updates – Headlines are sent via SMS to interested users (Note : Its a Google SMS Channel , So, Its SAFE)
  • Twitter : MicroBlogging serves as a nifty medium of communication
