This guide will help you jailbreak your iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4 and also iPod Touch 4G using Limera1n tool for Mac. Unlock is not available with this tool so those who need an unlock for iPhone should see the PwnageTool tutorial.
Please note that Limera1n tool needs you first upgrade your firmware through iTunes. If you are on firmware 4.0 or 4.0.1 or 4.0.2 you can Jailbreak using Limera1n and then unlock your iPhone using Ultrasn0w. Guide to Unlock can be found here.
However, if your iPhone firmware has already been upgraded to iOS 4.1 without preserving baseband you can only jailbreak iPhone at this moment and not unlock it. We insist that you read this guide which discusses if you Should upgrade your iPhone to iOS 4.1 before you take the leap.
Now getting back to the Jailbreak, here are the steps:

You can download IPSW file for the desired firmware from the following links and then use iTunes to restore or upgrade your firmware.

Now point your browser to http://www.limera1n.com/ and select your Operating System. Save the file to your Mac when prompted to do so.
Extract the archive and run the limera1n application.
Connect iPhone to Mac and close iTunes if it opens. Next click on the large “make it ra1n” button. Your iPhone will enter recover mode and you will be asked to press buttons in given sequence. In case you fail to do so you will have the ability to try again so don’t panic if you are not successful the first time.
Once limera1n completes the process it will show you the following notification. On restarting your iPhone you will be able to see Limera1n icon on your homescreen.
Most of the work is already done. You just need to install cydia now and uninstall the limera1n app from iPhone since you won’t need it again.
To install cydia launch Limera1n and select Cydia and click Install. Reboot your iPhone and then launch limera1n again to uninstall it.
