Normally our Facebook friends are scattered all over the world but if somebody will ask us to give their precise location on the world map then we will definitely be befuddled because some of those friends are only known to us virtually.

We have a utility called as Facebook Places that allow us to broadcast our location to the Facebook friends but utilities and maps that help us to track down the location of others are not so popular and normally we are unaware of them. So here are some of the Facebook and Maps mashups that ultimately allow us to track the location of Facebook friends on a map:

Where My Friends Be

Where-my-Friends-be-Facebook-application

This service is a simple network display of Facebook friends on a Google Map. This particular app grabs the users profile picture and then geo-locate that particular picture on Google map. After that it place markers on the locations where your friends are located and draw straight red lines to those markers illustrating the location relationship. The mapping thing is quite fast and within seconds users can visualize their entire Facebook friends network on a map. Users can even post their Friends map on their Facebook profile using Where My Friends Be.

OpenHeatMap

Open-Heat-Map-Facebook-app

The moment you will give permission to this app to pull your friends data from Facebook, it will instantly draw a heat map showing that where your friends are concentrated on a global map. The place where your friends are in greater number will be shown in bright red, whereas the lesser concentrations are shown by blue and yellow color. Users can also mouse over the heat map and the names of the friends will pop-up. You can visit their official website to have a better idea about the OpenHeatMap application.

Do you use any of the above site to see your friends location? Do you know any other sites which shows location of your Facebook friends on a map? Do let us know via comment.

Nikon has now declared the new addition to entry level DSLR lineup, the amazing D5100. This 16.2 MP camera is featured with easy to adjust LCD display, maximum ISO 25600, constant auto focus mode, 16.2 MP camera as well as the Special Effects mode that has 4 filters which work on the still images as well as movies.

The D5100 is the update to D5000 which was released originally in the year 2009. The latest Nikon addition falls between the D3100 and D7000 in the present lineup of the brand. The camera blends in well the features from both these models and even throws some amazing beginner useful filters and modes into the blend.

The Nikon D5100 is featured with similar ISO range as well as 16.2 megapixel camera, 23.3x 15.6 mm of CMOS sensor just like the D7000. In the continuous shooting feature, the camera can easily capture about 4 frames in every second. Weighing at just 18 ounces, the Nikon camera’s body is very light and compact like D3100.

The latest features on D5100 are mainly aimed at the users who wish to shoot movies using the DSLR. The camera has the capacity to capture 720p and 1080p movies at around 30fps. The 921,000 dot, 3 inches LCD display can even be flipped out as well as tilted to 170 degrees that helps to use the movie and Live View modes.

The Special Effects Mode added in the camera offers the users the facility of 4 filters which can be used with movies and still images: Color Sketch, Night Vision, tilt shift effect, Selective Color and the ISO 102400.

The Nikon D5100 is even packed with the capability to auto focus continuously while in the movie mode, which is the feature that has made debut in D3100. However a drawback of this particular feature is that it contributes in generating loud noise which is picked up by the microphone attached in the camera. To overcome this problem, though at extra cost, Nikon has released the latest external microphone known as the ME 1 which fits well into the hot shoe mount as well as plugs of the camera into mic input port. The external microphone is designed specially to compensate for the noise that is created by lens auto focus. This ME1 microphone will be available for sale separately from April and will cost around $180.

If you are a Nikon D5100 user, do let us know your review. One of CallingAllgeeks member is using Nikon D 5000 and according to him, it’s one of the best DSLR camera for entry level photographer.

In a blog post yesterday, Fring announced that they’re working on bringing a new feature to Android and iOS devices that would enable group video chat. We are familiar with using video chat on Fring, and it does provide some competition to other video calling services like Skype and Apple’s FaceTime. Moreover, video chat using Fring is free and the quality isn’t bad either.

At present the developers are giving this amazing application some final touches and hence this is currently in beta stage. The idea of being able to video chat with more than one person at a time is pretty cool isn’t it? Fring would be the first to get this feature to smartphones running on Android and the iPhone. iPhone’s FaceTime may need to go to the development sector for some new features, because Fring Group Video Call would certainly affect it.

Fring intends to bring this group video call feature to its users for free and will soon be up for grabs at respective application stores for both Android and iOS. Fring Group Video calling will let you talk to up to 4 members at a time, with video feed from each user shown by dividing the screen in 4 parts. At present, one can join in on the development of this app and opt-in as a real-time tester by filling out a form here. All the slots for iPhone testing has been taken, but if you’re an Android user you can fill in the form and submit it for some awesome group video call experience. Others don’t have to wait that long, because the final version will soon be out!! Till then enjoy the sneak peak of the application below.

The Fring video call service is certainly more practical than Apple’s FaceTime as you can use this feature via 3G too!! Let’s wait and watch how the Group Video Chat experience will be.

What are your thoughts on this new and exciting feature that will hit online stores soon?

Augmented Reality in Action

Augmented Reality in Action

The technological world is always moving at an astounding pace, and when I visited SXSW 2011 I stopped by the Traveller-AR booth, where I was introduced to a new technology called Augmented reality.  What really surprised me is this technology already exists in a few games, and hte actual technology itself already appears on TV, and has done for quite some time!

What is Augmented Reality?

The first question many people ask is ‘What is Augmented Reality?’  I know I did.  It turns out that Augmented reality is simply overlaying virtual reality on top of the real world.  In the iPhone game “Star Wars: Falcon Gunner” for example, you will find yourself fighting hordes of enemy tie fighters, over your own city skyline.  This immersive technology really can bring you in to a game more than ever before.

But lets rewind a few years, do you remember when football presenters started overlaying their circles and lines on top of game replays?  Lets rewind a few decades! Do you remember when credits were scrolled across video in the movies?

Augmented reality is definitely nothing new, however what IS new is the  way it is being implemented in handheld mobile devices.

With the dawn of the iPhone and other camera enabled mobile cell phones, augmetned reality can change the view of the world as seen through the device’s camera. With the ever-increasing power of these devices, and growing proficiency in object recognition, AR games have gone from being mere overlays, to allowing a game to interact with the world around you.  For instance you could be fighting off alien hordes, miss your target, and accidentally set fire to a billboard, or blow up a building!

There is talk of a portal like game, where you use objects in the real world, and manipulate them in-game, in the virtual world. There is even a tower game where you can create a small tower on your table to defined it from miniature enemies who are intent on taking over your living room.

Augmented reality promises a lot for the future of gaming, and although it may feel a little gimmicky in some ways, the huge application and immersing nature of this technology indicates that it will continue to be a big part of the future in mobile gaming.

Earlier we shared a complete feature list of Celeste Bluetooth file transfer app for iPhone. This app uses OBEX bluetooth transfer so you can communicate with almost all Bluetooth enabled device.

The only thing missing on your Apple device was Bluetooth file transfer and finally it has arrived thanks to cocoanutapps. Of course your device must be jailbroken to get Celeste from Cydia. Celeste was launched a few weeks ago for 7.99$ (3-day introductory price) which is now available at a price of 9.99$.  Now that price is too high for an app with a few bugs which just lets you transfer files over bluetooth.

So here is a solution to get Celeste working on your apple device free of cost. Note- This works only for jailbroken devices on iOS 4.2.1. You will also need sbsettings which can be found in Cydia.

Installing Celeste from Cydia:

1. Go to cydia, manage, sources, edit, add: http://repo.biteyourapple.net

2. Wait for a few seconds and then click on return to cydia. Now under the Manage Tab->Sources- you will find BiteYourApple. Open it and search for Celeste Bluetooth File Sharing, install it. Once installation is complete, click on the option Restart Springboard.

3. Now you will get an error: activation failed. Switch off 3G, Data & wi-fi and restart the springboard. Now activate 3G, data & Wi-fi and restart springboard. Now you will get a message License Activated.

4. That’s it done! Now slide on the status bar to open Sbsettings and click on Celeste when you want to tranfer files. You don’t have to activate bluetooth from settings.

You will find a option to send via bluetooth on images and to transfer music, click on the file for 2sec and you will get the option to send.

And another great thing is that with Celeste comes free Gremlin. Gremlin is the app which will automatically show the images received via bluetooth in camera roll and music in iPod. So whenever you complete receiving a file, you will find a ‘G’ symbol coming on status bar. And these files will automatically sync to itunes whenever you connect it to your PC.

Do let us know if you face any issue with Cydia or installing Celeste from Cydia.

This is my 1st post ever so sorry for any mistakes.

Recently, we told you about the release of Untethered Jailbreak for iOS 4.3.1 by the iPhone dev team and we also provided tutorials on jailbreaking using PwanageTool and RedsnOw. The dev-team are doing their job very well and have again updated RedsnOw and SnOwbreeze packages with custom boot logos and a few new features. The latest version of RedsnOw that you can download is version 0.9.6 RC11 and SnOwbreeze version 2.5.1.

<Image Credit>

The new versions bring a lot of minor changes to the jailbreak and also add the customizable boot logo for you iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. These new updates still don’t support jailbreaking iOS 4.3.1 on the iPad 2, but are good enough for other devices running the latest FW. The SnOwbreeze update also adds certain enhancements to your iDevice such as:

  • Cydia 1.1.1 comes pre-installed
  • iPhone 3GS users can now flash the iPad 06.15.00 baseband
  • Animate (Animated Boot Logos) by the Chronic Dev-Team is now supported
  • Added afc2 * Apple TV 2 is now fully supported
  • Added Apple TV 2 DFU Instructions
  • YouTube issues resolved on hacktivated devices
  • iPhone 3GS old-bootrom issues fixed (Error 37)

As for the new RedsnOw update, certain unnecessary options have been removed to make the jailbreak process much easier and faster. You can use both these packages to directly jailbreak on top of the already installed version without having to un-install or remove packages. All you have to do is uncheck Cydia while installation and everything will be fine. You can select ‘Allow Boot Animation’ option to download and change your boot logo using Cydia.

You can download the latest version of SnOwbreeze 2.5.1 from here and RedsnOw 0.9.6 RC11 from here. Unlockers need to stay away from RedsnOw and Sn0wBreeze releases to prevent risks. UltraSnOw update will soon be available in Cydia for unlockers to not lose your stock Baseband and unlock.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia Play is a very unique phone, mainly because of the gaming keypad that slides out instead of QWERTY keyboard and so is the Xperia Arc. Both these phones are the newcomers to the Xperia line-up and are much awaited for their latest features and sleek designs. The Xperia Arc is known for it’s slim design and the beautiful Reality Display that threatens to take down Apple’s Retina display. Xperia Play brings to your palm, the power of a portable playstation and hence is dubbed the Playstation phone. Indian customers and loyal Sony Ericsson fans waiting for these two devices have some good news, as Sony Ericsson has officially launched both the phones in India.

The Xperia Play and the Xperia Arc are both packed with very good hardware and come with Android 2.3 Gingerbread. The Play also comes pre-installed with the PlayStation Suite for enjoying PSP, PS3 and PS games on the mini-handled device. There are about 60 game title to choose from at the moment, all of which have been optimized for it’s gamepad. The Xperia Arc’s main attraction is it’s Reality Display and the EXMOR R sensor which provides backlight when taking photos in dark/low-light conditions. At a Press Event in Delhi earlier today, Sony Ericsson launched both these devices in India and provided the pricing. The prices are very high at the moment, but could decrease in the coming months.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc will be sold in India for a price tag of Rs. 32,000 and the Xperia Play will be sold for Rs. 35,000. You can also pre-order one at Flipkart(1,2) or Infibeam for and save a lot as the prices are a lot cheaper online. Both the phones will be available for purchase at all leading Sony Ericsson outlets and mobile stores in India.

VLC media player is one of the most famous open source media players. Did you know that you can use VLC media player as a television and watch tv channels on it? In this post I will show you how you can do that with an easy tutorial. So, lets begin.

1. Open up VLC Media Player. Don’t have it installed? Download VLC player from here –> Link.

2. See the first option on the top? “Media”. Click it and then click the second last option from the drop down box, “Streaming”.
3. After clicking “Streaming” option, a new dialog box opens up which has 4 tabs. You have to select the third one –> “Network”.

4. Now you have opened the “Network” tab and have an empty box where you have to enter the network URL. For eg. rtsp://ss1c6.idc.mundu.tv:554/prf0/cid_4.sdp is the network URL of Aaj Tak.
5. After entering the network URL, click that downwards arrow(with the “Stream” button) and choose the “Play” option.
Thats it. Some 15-20 seconds later you will be able to watch the channel you have given the network URL for.

For some unknown reasons, I was not able to take a perfect screenshot of the video but I hope you have understood the tutorial. Below are the network URLs of some available channels.
