There are times when people will want to do thing but remain anonymous. There are many software which will hide the identity of a computer in many ways but the only thing that still doesn’t change is the MAC address. If anyone gets a computer’s MAC address, it can easily be identified and traced. So to be completely anonymous, you’ll need to change your MAC address. There were some software which could change the MAC address in Windows XP temporarily but they didn’t work in Windows 7.

When it comes to broadband in India, there are few key players which rules Indian broadband backbone. Airtel and MTNL/BSNL has widest coverage in terms of coverage.

I have been using Airtel broadband connection from last 5 years and I always have love and hate relation with them. Despite of their quality tech support, I hate their customer service which is below average and I hate their FUP.

FUP is Fair usage policy which limits your unlimited broadband connection to a limit and when you finish that bandwidth threshold, your broadband speed will be revise to 256Kbps.  I’m using Airtel broadband 1799 Plan which gives me 4 MBPS speed and FUP limit of 50Gb. Being a power user, I consume my 50Gb limit by 15th day of every month and I had to rely on my 3.1 MBPs Tata photon+. Though Problem with Tata Photon+ is, speed is consistent and at times I can’t completely rely on Tata photon+.

Airtel Speed on Demand service:

Here I’m talking about Airtel Speed on demand service, which will let you increase your speed to 512 kbps, 1 mbps or 2mbps for one hour by paying nominal charge.

Here is how Airtel charges for Speed on demand service:

Airtel-Speed-on-demand

So now, when ever I have an important video meeting or important Freelancing work, I usually activate the speed on demand service by Airtel and enjoy high bandwidth for 1 hour. You can always reactivate this service instantly.

To activate Airtel speed on demand service, Go to their page and select your city. You might need to login to your Airtel account to activate this service. It will show you your Airtel DSL id and you can select the speed which you want to activate and it will be activated instantly for one hour.

It will also ask you if you wish to renew Speed on demand ( Airtel SOD) service after 1 hour and you can renew it or it will be deactivated automatically after one hour.

Here is a screenshot of Airtel SOD service running while writing this post:

airtel-activated-speed-on-demand-service

I would say, Airtel offering nominal charge but they might like to bring their 512 kbps plan to single digit to make this service more popular.

Have you ever used Airtel Speed on demand service? How’s your experience with Airtel broadband service?

Imagine you’re some place outside and your friend needs to access the internet through his laptop, but doesn’t have a wireless 3G dongle. The only option would be to share internet connection with your friend, right from your laptop. This can be done natively in Windows 7, but since we are all growing more and more lazier, it would be nicer if there was some software that would do the job for us. And as it happens, there are a few and I’ll be talking about two such free software that’ll  let you share internet in Windows 7.

How to Share Internet in Windows 7

Here I’ll be using two free software that’ll help your turn your Windows 7 system into a WiFi hotspot. Firstly, there is Connectify and then there is mHotspot. If you’re a regular Windows 7 user, then you must be aware of the Virtual WiFi feature that is inbuilt, these two software use the same thing, but make it far more simpler.

Connectify

Connectify

Connectify can be used to create instant WiFi hotspots using your Windows 7 system. Download Connectify, install and follow the onscreen instructions to get started. It’s not hard at all. Once it’s all set up, you can even use it to improve the range of your home router and connect your mobile device, other laptops and devices to your personal hotspot. And, yes it works. You can also use this to share another WiFi network, not just yours. Watch the video after the break.

There you go!! That’s one down, one more to go.

mHotSpot

If you just want a software to quickly create a WiFi hotspot using your own Router or USB datacard, then this is best option for you. Just enter a name for your HotSpot, a password and hit the Start button. It’ll be activated instantly, no messing around at all. However, this cannot use other WiFi networks to create hotspots, it only uses your home network. It can also be used to amplify the range of your router, but this might cause lags in internet speeds.

mHotSpot

Download mHotSpot now start your own WiFi hotspot.

These are the two simplest software to enable internet sharing in Windows 7 or create a WiFi hotspot using your Windows 7 system. Do try them out and let us know how they worked for you.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The world is trending in the direction of putting everything that was once a weighty burden in compact and convenient digital form.  Recently Ebay and Google have unraveled their plans to make even the old-fashioned wallet digital.  Visa is also, flaunting its plans to make their own version of the digital wallet, although the results have been much less forthcoming.

The digital wallet has to potential to, not only be more convenient than a clunky wallet, but completely revolutionize commerce.

For people who are unaware about what Digital wallet is, it let you make payment using your mobile phones. Also popularly known as e-wallet. Imagine walking into a store to find the perfect outfit for your next major social or business event.  You search through the store until you find something that you happy with.  The next step is taking it to the cash register to pay for it, right?  Well with a digital wallet not necessarily. Watch this introduction of Visa digital wallet by Jim MacCarthy of Visa:

Benefits of Digital Wallet

Digital WalletNow it will take some time before people in mass adopt any of this E-wallet in day to day activities.  Another important factor about digital wallet is, it’s integrated with your smart-phone, so you need not need to carry anything else in your pocket. Mobile is something that everyone carries all the time.

Skip the Cashier

With the digital wallet you will be able to pay for your purchase right from inside the store.  Theoretically, you could then walk right out of the store and skip the cash register altogether.  The only glitch might be the little plastic doohickey that sets off the alarm if you walk out with it, but I am sure stores will work out a way around that in order to maximize the customer experience. Imagine taking your outfit to the dressing room, deciding that you like them, and without bothering to take them off, paying for them on your E-Wallet.  You could be in and out of the store with a new outfit on your back in a matter of minutes (unless you like to shop for hours like me).

Comparison Shopping

But wait, it doesn’t end there.  What if you find an outfit that you like, but you don’t like the price?  PayPal has come out with a new service which will allow you to scan the barcode of any product and then search for a better deal in the nearby vicinity.  It kind of makes the words “comparison shopping” take on a new meaning.

Personal Finance Convenience

But the mobile wallets influence on commerce won’t end at check out.  What if you get home and realize that although you paid for your purchase in one payment with MasterCard it would have been better had you paid with Visa in installments?  Sounds like another hopeless case of tough luck.  Not with Google’s or PayPal’s digital wallet, with a digital wallet you will be able to actually change the payment options up to a month after making the purchase.

Lets understand it more closely with Google video on Google Wallet:

In Summation

Since the digital wallet concept is relatively new, the possibilities are also relatively unexplored and undeveloped.  Imagine what could be in another 10 years, the shoppers experience will probably completely different than what we can currently imagine. So are you looking forward to using your mobile as wallet in future? How’s the idea and are you one of those tech pundits who have already tested and used this service?

When ever I suggest someone to buy a new custom or company fitter desktop or laptop, I always suggest to check CPU speed and RAM for optimum performance. There are many ways by which we can check the processor benchmark and I will be talking about one such site today. This is going to be useful for people who constantly look forward to upgrade their PC’s and get more out of it. These days buying computer for our daily work is not so easy task. There are hell lots of processors in the market and continuously they are keep coming. Selecting a nice processor without actually using it is definitely not an easy task.

CPU BenchMark : Select best Processor for your computer

There is a website known as CPU Benchmarks, which offers benchmarking stats of more than 200,000 CPUs. If you are planning to buy a computer then it is better idea to land on this website before purchasing it. This site tells you about performance of different CPU’s. These data are collected by testing these CPU’s in various conditions.

CPU BenchMark

All the CPU’s present in the world are divided into several categories. There are categories such as high end CPU chart, high to mid range, low to mid range, common CPU chart, best value CPU chart etc.

cpu-benchmark

Screenshot given below shows performance chart of high end CPU’s from CPU BenchMark site. You can also check the price and last update date of the chart.

PassMark

Apart from CPUs, benchmarks stats for hard drives, graphic cards, and complete systems are present on the site. You can also generate Full PDF reports which shows the performances of various antivirus software. With lots of great information this site is worth bookmarking. You definitely need to check the stats before purchasing any computer.

Go to CPU BenchMarks.

At the time of writing here are top 3 CPU’s in single CPU category:

  • Intel Xeon  E5-2687W @ 3.10GHz

Aircel Pocket 3G : New Plans

Aircel is launching a set of new 3G Plans and we would like to share the same with you. You would recall that 3 years ago when Aircel launched Pocket Internet, it changed the way mobile internet was perceived and consumed. It truly democratised data for the consumer.

With 3G we are at a similar juncture. While consumers understand the benefit of 3G and there is a desire to adopt, 3G remains out of their reach. With Aircel’s new offering of Pocket Internet Smart has Aircel is ready to revolutionize the landscape of mobile internet unlocking the true 3G potential, both for the consumer and the business.

PocketInternet Smart will offer Aircel consumers unlimited 3G at attractive prices. It will also for the first time, offer, unlimited 3G and 2G data on a single recharge and the plans will be device agnostic. These innovative features will provide consumers benefits such as freedom from data bills shocks, ease of recharge and convenience of using the same plan across devices – mobiles, tablets and dongles

Aircel Pocket Internet Smart Offering:

Price Validity High Speed Data Data Transfer on 3G & 2G network in Validity High Speed Pre – FuP Speed post FUP
7 1 50 MB Unlimited 3.6 Mbps 128 kbps
18 3 100 MB Unlimited 3.6 Mbps 128 kbps
37 7 200 MB Unlimited 3.6 Mbps 128 kbps
67 15 250 MB Unlimited 3.6 Mbps 128 kbps
128 30 500 MB Unlimited 3.6 Mbps 128 kbps
198 30 1 GB Unlimited 3.6 Mbps 128 kbps
399 30 2 GB Unlimited 3.6 Mbps 128 kbps
697 30 5 GB Unlimited 7.2 Mbps 128 kbps
997 30 10 GB Unlimited 7.2 Mbps 128 kbps

Here are 10 reasons why we feel the Aircel’s Pocket Internet Smart would help the consumers:

  1. 3G is currently 10X more expensive than the 2G offering.
  2. Currently, a customer needs to buy separate packs to browse on 2G and 3G.
  3.  As of now most 3G packs in the market allow limited browsing, i.e. post free usage user is charged at 10p/10KB that effectively translate into INR10/MB leading to huge bills!
  4. There is no availability of daily, weekly or sachet unlimited 3G packs for intermittent/ casual usage.
  5. With the current 3G/2G packs, the customer has to keep toggling between 2G and 3G on his phone so that he doesn’t end up using his expensive 3G data in 2G network. With the new plans, he no longer needs to do this.
  6. Dongle plans from Aircel now start at as low as 198 per month. This is also an unlimited plan and the customer can freely consume data without worrying about the bill.
  7. The new dongle plans are also a major deviation from the current set up. Unlimited plans from Aircel start at below Rs 200. There is a possibility of using Aircel card on existing dongles (which could be a Micromax/ Huawei/ etc.) and benefit with these new plans.
  8. For the first time, Aircel has come out with low priced plans, which don’t have a rider – there’s not even a speed rider. Even the lowest plan, at Rs. 8, comes with a 3.6Mbps speed.
  9. All the plans can be used on roaming. So a customer moving to a 2G area can consume data seamlessly. Also, even if he moves to a 2G circle, he can continue consuming data seamlessly (at 2G speeds).
  10. At and above Rs. 198, the customer can freely move his plan from mobile to dongle to tab etc. There is no restrictions on type of device – which is currently there on every operator – including Aircel.

Do you have any query regarding Aircel 3G plan? Do let us know..

Screen capture a.k.a taking screenshots are of those activities that you must be doing day to day. I have been using many tools on my Windows system and mostly stick to Snag it and Windows 7 snipping tool for taking screenshot. Though, as I mentioned in my earlier article (Download Google chrome offline Installer), Chrome is my favorite browser, so I thought of adding one such chrome screen capture addon, which will help me taking screen-shots quickly. Aviary is not the only addon but this is by far one of my favorite extension for Chrome.

Aviary addon for Chrome:

Among the many Google Chrome plugins, one of the most useful plugins is Aviary Screen Capture. This nifty little extension for Google Chrome lets Chrome users take screenshots of any webpage and quickly edit it from within the browser using the web app at aviary.com. Aviary Screen Capture also gives access to other services provided by aviary.com.

Aviary

After installation of Aviary Screen Capture plugin, an icon is added to the address bar of Google Chrome browser which can then be clicked to access the services provided by Aviary Screen Capture.

How to use Aviary to Capture screen in Chrome:

Capturing the screen can be done by selecting the Capture Visible Portion of Page. This opens Aviary Image Markup tab with the webpage which is selected in a new tab. Next, a set of tools is made available from which users can select portions of a web page and then edit them with MS paint like features.

Chrome Screen Capture

One of the features offered by Aviary Screen Capture is the color editor which is a within-browser color editor and color editor can be used to modify images and other multimedia elements.

Aviary also lets crop and resize images, rotate and flip them and also add visual notes like arrows, text and highlights to captured images.

Aviary Screen Capture is a one-in-all image capture and editing tool which can be effectively used to capture and edit all kinds of images and webpages within Google Chrome web browser. Well, if you are looking for a simple and easy to use Chrome screen capture addon, Aviary should be your quick choice.

Google Chrome Screenshot Extension

There are many Google chrome screenshot extensions available at chrome app store and many of them are kick-ass when it comes to screen capturing feature. Here I have compiled a list of useful chrome extension which will help you to take screenshot right from chrome browser.

In case, if you are looking for a full fledged desktop based screenshot software, try Snag it. Professionally, I use Snag it but anyways these chrome screenshot extensions will be very handy when you want to take a quick screenshot of an area or a complete web page.

Useful Screenshot taking Chrome Extensions:

I have already talked about Aviary which is one of my top chrome screenshot extension but as I mentioned in the article there are many more like that and we will look into some of the best and recommended screenshot chrome addons.

Keep in mind, every addon serves different purpose for example, some of them let you capture complete web page screenshot and edit them too. Some of them, let you upload and host the screenshot on their website for easy sharing. So lets dive into the world of these screenshot plugins for Chrome and later on let us know, which is your favorite one:

GatherBack Screenshots Anywhere

GatherBack Screenshots Anywhere

This extension is nice but not too good. There is nothing very special in it. The only thing which made me put this extension in this countdown was that it allows us to manage all our screenshots (if we register on it). After taking the screenshot we can mail it to anyone. We can even save it by giving our email address (the screenshot comes to our email). It is useful for people who just need screenshot and no editing.

Explain And Send Screenshots

Explain And Send Screenshots

This is a great extension. Its very useful with a lot of options. You can take a screenshots in 3 ways; Visible part of the page, Selected area and Entire page. After taking the screenshot you can edit it in a lot of ways. The options are :- cropping, make an arrow, make a circle, make a rectangle, make a line, freehand and add a text.

This extension is good and I suggest that you should use it.

Webpage Screenshot Chrome extension:

Webpage Screenshot Chrome extension

This plugin is nice and has same options as the above one, but the main reason this extension is at number 3 is the “Content Edit” option, which is currently in beta mode. By using that option you can edit the whole content on a webpage. Here is an example of what I edited on CAG:-

To save the screenshots you take from this extension, you have to install another plugin whose link is given when you try to save the screenshot. This is useful and interesting extension, I would recommend this plugin.

Awesome Screenshots: Capture and Annotate

This is one of my favorite extensions and almost the best. The experience of using this extension is great. The user interface is also awesome. The options of editing are as same as the above two but there is one new option – Blur. Using that, you can blur a part (or the whole screenshot) of the screenshot. After taking the screenshot you can share it easily to sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Google Buzz etc. You also get the image link so you can easily share the screenshot with your friends.

Lightshot Chrome extension

This screenshot extension for Chrome just rocks, the biggest reason for this being the first in the countdown is the lots of editing options. To take a screenshot from this extension, you need to first click the icon of the extension and then select the part of the page you want to take. Then click the “pencil” image which is “Edit online”. Using that you can edit the picture. The interface of the editing page is just like Adobe Photoshop and the options too are like that. Here is the interface of the extension:-

Lightshot Chrome extension

This is the best screenshot editor in all the screenshot extensions which made me bring this extension to the number one spot. Do try it and believe me you are going to love it.

My rating:- 5/5

Above were  top 5 screenshot extensions for chrome which you can use for taking screenshot in chrome browser. If you don’t want to use extensions for taking screenshot you can take screenshot manually using MS paint.

How to take screenshot without any software or extension?

Depending upon which Windows OS you are using, you can always take screenshot without any addon. For example, Windows 7 offers handy snipping tool where as in XP or even in Windows 7, you can use Print screen key to take screenshot of screen and later on you can use Paint to edit it.

Press the PrtscsysRq (Print Screen) key which is near the Delete key and then open Microsoft Paint and click the Select option and use ctrl+v (or right click and paste) the image you have copied using the PrtscsysRq key. I think you all must have known this before but its just for those who don’t know. If you are using Windows7 or upper version it has an inbuilt-tool call snipping tool, which is one of the best & free way to take screenshot on your computer.

I hope you liked the post, which Google chrome screenshot extension do you use for taking screenshots? Which is your favorite extension from the above 5?

The Web is Dead InfographicI am assuming that you have already heard of one of the famous article of Wired magazine proclaiming the death of the Web. The article is centered around the following infographic.

You may like to comeback after reading the linked post. For the lazy geeks like me, the article can be summarized in the following points

  • The web is only html pages and images that are displayed in a browser. It is just one of the applications that make use of TCP/IP protocol.
  • The web is distinct from other applications like video, p2p networks, facebook applications.
  • The infographic displays the proportion of total megabytes of data consumed by each of these applications as a percentage of total data consumed through all applications using tcp/ip protocol over the years.

The Web is dead or not?

This article is really important for all geeks out there as it highlights the fact that the alternative methods of serving data like video/applications/ feed reader are getting increasingly important. It will have profound effect on which startups will succeed and which ones will fail and the way we may try to popularize our products. Having said that, I will like to tell you that the web is very much alive. Look at the third bullet in the summary of the post with particular focus on the highlighted words.

  1. That graph is measuring amount of data used by different applications. Obviously I consume more data while watching a video on youtube as compared to browsing the web for mobile phone prices for an equivalent amount of time.
  2. While the proportion of the web in the total pie may be going down, the absolute number is increasing. 45% of 5 billion users is much better than 70% of 500 million users. That 5 billion number is not a result of my imagination. The 5 billionth device is about to plug into the internet.
  3. The Wired “the web is dead“article focuses on usage pattern in US alone. That is of no use in a world where most internet companies get majority of users from outside US. Any analysis that does not include emerging markets like India and China, is useless IMHO.
  4. According to this Techcrunch report, the base data counts Youtube videos towards video applications like Skype video and not towards web data. That is wrong since Youtube does use a browser to work and as per the agreed definition, it should have been counted towards web.

Considering all of the above, I will suggest that there is no need to mourn the death of the internet yet. Still we will do well to focus on emerging patterns in other streams as well to spot any apparent opportunity. What do you think?
