“Where do tech journalists go to read tech journalism? Techmeme doesn’t offer any original content, but it offers a well curated aggregation of some of the best industry coverage the Web has to offer,” according to PC Magazine, which included it in one of the top 100 Websites of 2010.

If you are running a Tech News Blog, then you would love to get your Blog on Techmeme for number of reasons including targeted Traffic, Promotion and quality Backlinks from high authority sites.

Inclusion of news stories depends on many factors. Previously, stories were included by Techmeme bots so it was more an automated process but now a few human editors have been added who also review news stories before addition to Techmeme.

It’s not easy to get your blog featured on Techmeme but if you will follow below tips then chances are higher that your blog will be included.

5 Tips to get popular on TechMeme

1. Become a news breaker. Write breaking news related to Tech giants such as Google, Apple, Microsoft, Facebook and Twitter.

2. If you blogged about some unique piece on your blog E.g “Mark Zuckerberg’s Beijing Adventure”, you can tip Techmeme about the story and your story would have good chances to get indexed on the site.

3. If you are re-blogging some news story, then most probably your news wouldn’t be included, but if you are providing some unique context that is missing from the current Techmeme Discussion then it can get featured.

4. If your blog is already indexed by Techmeme then your blog can become the part of the Techmeme Discussion section by just blogging about the current news. This is not always the case but the chances are pretty high.

5. In order to inform Techmeme about your breaking news or some exclusive piece on Tech, you can tip them using Twitter or through Email to Editorial team at [email protected]. Tipping them through Twitter is more preferable. Include “Tip @Techmeme”  in your tweet along with the Title and the URL of the news story you’d like to appear.

This is for Facebook beginners only, if you’re not one, you should tell your beginner friends about this so that you can enlighten them about the Facebook tagging feature. Facebook was launched a long time ago, in 2004, and is now the number one social networking website in the world, valuated at over $75 billion.

After creating a Facebook account, and adding friends and exploring a little, you’ll soon want to learn how to share photos, links and videos with friends and family. There’s a feature called tagging, that can be used to make sharing easier. Tagging allows you to add people to your Status updates, Videos, Photos, Links and Comments. In this how-to, we’ll be learning the art of tagging your friends/family/page on your status or comments. The benefit of tagging your friends on Facebook is that they’ll get a notification for the same and this way they won’t miss out anything important.

There are two ways that can be used to tag people. Earlier, you only had one way of doing it, but recently Facebook also added an easier way of going about tagging people. Also, some months back, the feature was only available in Statuses and Photos and Videos, now you can even tag people on comments. Let’s begin then.

Tag People in Facebook Status Using @

Whenever you want to tag a friend on your Status update, all you have to do is use the ‘@’ symbol before you start typing your friends name. Facebook will automatically provide you all the suggestions for names beginning with the first letter that you type.

Tag People in Facebook Status

As you can see in the picture above, use the symbol right before the name, the first letter doesn’t have to be in capitals. You can use the same method to tag people on comments.

comment tagging

There is however a limit to the number of people you can tag in your status or in a comment. So if you’re planning to tag a lot of people, you can add them in new comments.

Tag People By Typing the First Letter of their name in Capitals

This is another way of tagging your friends in your status or comments. It’s simpler than the first one, you don’t have to use the @ symbol. To tag, just start typing your friends name with a capital letter.

Facebook Caps Tagging

As you can see, starting their names in capital automatically suggests you the friend you want to tag. However, you may have to type more than the first 2-3 letters to get the exact friend you’re looking for, unlike the first method.

You can also use only their friends name, if that’s how you like it. When tagging a friend, it usually shows the full name. Just remove the last name and you should still have the first name of your friend tagged to his profile. This works with both the above methods.

facebook tagging

If you have any trouble understanding anything written above, you can always watch the little tutorial that we cooked up just for you, after the break.

I hope you’ve learnt how-to tag people on Facebook comments and statuses now. So keep sharing with your friends and have a good time. If you have any queries, you can use the comment box.

Gorilla GlassOne of the most important components of today’s smart phone and tablet computers are their touch screens.  The glass of the touch screen has to be light weight and thin, yet tough enough to withstand the abuses of everyday use – stains, scratches, falls, etc. Corning’s Gorilla Glass is perfect for this purpose.

What is Gorilla Glass?

No, Gorilla Glass is not made from gorillas. Gorilla Glass is a specially formulated alkali-aluminosilicate sheet glass designed to be thin, light weight and damage-resistant. It’s primarily used in portable electronic devices with screens, such as mobile phones, portable media players, tablet computer displays and laptop displays.

Gorilla glass begins as a mixture of refined “pure sand” – silicon dioxide - and other naturally occurring chemicals which are melted down into glass.

The product that emerges from this first stage of the process isn’t much stronger than regular glass. Gorilla Glass gets its strength during the next step, called the “fusion” process. Each sheet of glass is dipped into a high temperature salt bath where a chemical exchange occurs. Potassium ions from the salt are infused into the glass while the sodium ions are squeezed out.  The potassium ions, which are larger than the sodium ions, create a pressure in the glass that’s known as “compressive stress”. Regular glass is a brittle material that is extremely strong under compression but extremely weak under tension. This compression prevents the glass from being broken due to flaws, making the resulting glass exceptionally resistant to damage.

How Did Gorilla Glass Come To Be Used in Over 600 Million Devices?

Corning began experimenting with chemically strengthened glass in 1960, as part of a product development program called “Project Muscle“.  This resulted in the creation of a material called “Chemcor” glass, which served as the basis for today’s Gorilla Display Glass. At the time Corning could find no practical use for its “Chemcor” glass, so it was never put into mass production; however, the special glass was used use in one hundred 1968 Dodge Dart and Plymouth Barracuda race cars, primarily to reduce their weight.

In 2006, this all changed. By now everyone’s heard the story of how Gorilla Glass came to be used in the first version of the iPhone.  Apple CEO Steve Jobs was upset about how easily the plastic screen on his iPhone prototype became scratched. He decided the iPhone needed a glass screen, but not just any glass; it had to be scratch resistant as well as aesthetically appealing.  This led to a fateful meeting with Wendell Weeks, CEO of Corning Glass. It turns out Corning had just what Jobs was looking for: Gorilla Glass, a product they had developed back in the 1960s. This was just what Jobs was looking for. Unfortunately, Corning had never put Gorilla Glass into production. When Weeks informed Jobs that Corning wasn’t able to manufacture the quantities Apple required. To which Jobs replied, “Don’t be afraid. You can do it.”

Weeks and Corning rose to the challenge. Corning’s Harrodsburg, Kentucky factory was able to produce enough screens in time for the release of Apple’s iPhone in June 2007.

Corning revealed its new Gorilla Glass 2 earlier this year. Sheets of Gorilla Glass 2 can be up to 20 percent thinner than the original, but with the same elegant appearance and damage resistant qualities. Its remarkable thinness will enable the production of slimmer and sleeker devices with brighter screen images and improved touch sensitivity.  Auto manufacturer Hyundai is developing a Gorilla Glass dashboard for its automobiles. Corning is also teaming up with Samsung to develop better, more damage resistant screens using a new substrate called Lotus Glass.

Apple and Gorilla Glass

What about the Apple/Corning connection? The only Apple product confirmed to use Gorilla Glass is the first iPhone. You see no mention of Corning on Apple’s site and Apple is not listed as one of the companies that use Gorilla Glass in their products. However, it is commonly believed that most new Apple products, including the iPad use Gorilla Glass for their digitizer screens and that this “secrecy” is the result of non-disclosure agreements between the two companies.

Also check out this interesting video by Corning: “A Day made of Glass

A Unique and Innovative Product

Today, Gorilla Glass can be found in over 600 million devices from manufacturers like Acer, Sony, Dell, Nokia and others. It has become a primary component in smart phones, tablet computers and other consumer electronic devices made by a multitude of companies. If you own a device with a touch screen, chances are the screen is made of Gorilla Glass.  This unique and innovative product will undoubtedly continue to have a major impact on consumer electronics for years to come.

I’ve been using the Ubuntu 11.04 for quite some time now. Compared to the previous versions, various changes have been made in Ubuntu like the Unity interface became the default UI for Gnome, Banshee replaced RhythmBox as the default media player, OpenOffice.org was replaced with LibreOffice, etc. This enabled me to easily switch from Windows to Ubuntu. I could easily find replacements for most of the applications I used in Windows. But, one Windows feature I still miss is automatically changing wallpapers.

DesktopNova

Automatically changing wallpapers or slideshow wallpapers gives your desktop a completely new level of personalization. Well, after Googling for a while I found that by using an application called DesktopNova you can easily create changing wallpapers in Ubuntu. DesktopNova is a simple application for Ubuntu that automatically changes your desktop wallpaper after a preset period of time. This application works only on Gnome and Xfce desktops. In this post, I will show you how to install and use DesktopNova in Ubuntu 11.04.

Installing DesktopNova

To install DestopNova, click on Applications in your Unity launcher menu and search for Terminal. If you are using the classic Gnome interface, you can open up the terminal by going to Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal.

Ubuntu Terminal

In the Terminal window, type the following command to download and install DesktopNova.

sudo apt-get install desktopnova desktopnova-tray desktopnova-module-gnome

Install DesktopNova

Once the installation is done, you will have to configure the application so that it can work with your desktop.

Configuring DesktopNova

To open the DesktopNova configuration tool, click on Applications in your Unity launcher menu and search for DesktopNova. Classic Gnome users can just go to Applications -> Accessories -> DesktopNova.

DesktopNova

First, you will have to add the images that you want to use in rotation. To add images one-by-one simply click on the Add button. To add directories, click on Add Folder button and select the directory that contains the wallpapers.

DesktopNova Configuration

Once you have added the images you need, go to the Settings tab. Under Settings, tick the checkbox next to Change wallpaper in intervals and enter how frequently you would like DesktopNova to change the wallpaper. Also tick the checkbox next to Change wallpaper every launch and Launch daemon every session(Autorun) so that DesktopNova automatically starts every time you start your system or even change your session.

DesktopNova Settings

Now, to activate DesktopNova on your desktop, click on Modules, select Gnome 0.2 and hit the OK button.

DektopNova Module

Next, go to the Tray-Icon tab and tick the checkbox next to Launch tray-icon every session(Autorun). This makes sure that the DesktopNova tray icon launches automatically when you log in. The tray icon enables you to manually change wallpapers as and when required. Finally, hit the Save Settings button at the bottom. This completes the configuration of DesktopNova.

To start DesktopNova, go to the Settings tab and hit the Start Daemon button.

Start Daemon

This starts the daemon that works in the background and automatically changes your wallpaper. To start the tray icon, just log out and log back into your account. You can manually change your background by right-clicking on the tray icon.

UltraSurf Desktop Proxy softwareWebsite blocking is nothing new to internet world. Usually education institutes, organization, companies blocks social networking websites like Facebook, Chatroulette and many others to enhance productivity. Though, I’m strongly against internet censorship and therefore here I’m going to talk about one of the best desktop proxy software call Ultrasurf. There are many other similar software’s like Ultrasurf such as: Your-freedom, JAp and many more but I always prefer Ultra surf over anything else.

What is Ultrasurf:

As I mentioned above, Ultrasurf is a desktop proxy software which connects to proxy server and you need to tweak your browser proxy settings to connect to Ultrasurf servers. Once you are connected to their server, you can start accessing any blocked website in your organization. The interesting part about Ultrasurf is, you can carry it in your pen drive and it doesn’t require any kind of Installation. So if software installation is blocked at your work place, you need not need to worry.  If your organization doesn’t allow changing your IE proxy settings, you might need to find another alternative, which we will talk in other post. I hope this give you a brief idea about what is Ultrasurf and now, lets look into setup part of this useful free desktop proxy software.

Note: It’s a Windows based application

How to use Ultrasurf?

Using Ultra surf is easy and all you need to do is download Ultrasurf from their official site. If proxy sites are blocked in your organization, you might need to download Ultra surf at your home and carry it to your office. You can use Dropbox or Google drive to quickly gain access to Ultrasurf in your office.

Once you have gained access to a copy of Ultrasurf, simply double click on u.exe and run it. It by defaults set your Internet explorer and Chrome proxy settings to use Ultra surf servers.

If you are using any alternate browsers like Firefox, Opera: You need to add following proxy settings

  • 127.0.0.1: 9666

Once done, you will be able to access all the blocked sites in your office. This also helps in removing ISP based blocking. For example, recently in my country most of sites like Vimeo, PirateBay has been blocked and we have been getting message saying “Access to this site has been blocked as per Court Orders”, using Ultra surf you can get rid of such warning and access all sites including Piratebay and other torrent sites. Though I have not tried configuring uTorrent to use Ultra surf, but if you have done it, do let us know via comment.

You can also use this proxy software to hide your I.P and access websites with different I.P. If you have been in habit of using Proxy websites in your college and office, shift to Ultra surf and see the difference.

Suppose you’re away from your phone, playing a game or working in front of your PC and you get an important call or a text from your close ones, you wouldn’t want to miss it right? During circumstances like this, wouldn’t it be useful if you received the notifications on your desktop, let it be a call or a text. If you’re an Android user, we’ve got a free app for you that will do all the exchanging of notifications between your phone and the desktop PC for you. It’s called Android Notifier or Remote Notifier, both are the same.

Android Notifier

Use Android Notifier for Getting Notification on Windows Desktop:

Android Notifier is a free app that helps you receive your SMS, Call and Battery notifications on your desktop PC over WiFi or Bluetooth. You install the app on your mobile device, then you download a corresponding app for your Mac, Windows or Linux PC. There is a little bit of setting up to do, but that does not involve any head explosions. All you have to do is set up an active link between your Android phone and the PC over a WiFi connection or Bluetooth.

Once the desktop application is installed, you’ll need run it and give in certain details on what notifications to get and how. It’s pretty easy, like I said before. Remember, you should already have the Android notifier app installed on your mobile and it should be on the same WiFi network as your PC. Reboot your PC and the mobile device and check the option to Start the service at boot.

Now, you should be able to get all your SMS, Call and Battery notifications right on your Desktop in a popup window. If you have Growl installed on your Mac or Windows, then you can select Growl to display these notifications. The best thing about this app is that it’s available on Mac, Windows and Linux, is easy to setup and works like a charm. Only problem, it doesn’t tell you the contact name, just displays the number, so if you’re bad at remembering phone numbers, then this isn’t a very good idea for you.

You can download the Android app and Desktop app for Android Notifier from here. Try this out and see how it works for you.

iPhone Recovery Mode

This tutorial tells you the basic difference between iPhone’s DFU and Recovery modes and what mode is used for what purpose. If you already know the difference between the two modes and looking for just the instructions on how to put iPhone into the two modes read:

Difference Between DFU and Recovery Mode:

What are these modes for and why should I know about them?

If you are a new iPhone user or don’t care about jailbreaking chances are that you might have never come across these two modes and won’t need to in the future either. But if you use Cydia or custom IPSW firmware on your iPhone or other iOS devices you will definitely come across this.

DFU stands for Device Firmware Update. Both of the modes can be entered by pressing a particular series of buttons on your iPhone. They help you update or install firmware when the normal iTunes method fails. Here are some situations when you might need to use these modes.

  • Reset iPhone if your forgot Passcode
  • Downgrade Firmware version
  • Install beta iOS Firmware
  • When iTunes returns errors like 1013, 1603 etc.

iPhone Recovery mode vs DFU mode:

iPhone Recovery Mode:

Recovery Mode boots your iPhone and stops at the Connect to iTunes screen. You can use it to install the latest firmware but not downgrade. You can click on Restore in iTunes to let iTunes download firmware and install. Alternatively, you can download firmware from here and press Alt + Restore(Shift + Restore on Windows) to browse for firmware manually.

iPhone Recovery Mode

The recovery mode and iTunes will prevent you from restoring to older firmware than the current firmware. You will keep getting error in iTunes every time you try doing it. This is because iPhone has already booted and knows the current firmware version.

iPhone DFU Mode:

DFU mode on the other hand does not fully start up the iPhone or iPod Touch. The screen remains off and appears as if your iPhone is turned off but it will be recognized in iTunes and be ready for restoring to any firmware. Since, the firmware is not booted you can downgrade iPhone to previous versions or even custom firmwares with Cydia and other packages created from jailbreak tools like PwnageTool.

iPhone DFU Mode
Learn how to put iPhone into DFU mode:

So now you know the difference between the two modes. Let us know if you have any related questions via comments.

Google Apps for Education

Google seems to be poised to take over the world, and this is not limited to the Internet. Google applications and functions are now coming to schools and universities. Google’s Apps for Education is streamlining education around the world, making it easier for teachers and administrators to connect with each other, their students and their peers; and, it is all offered all for free.

Google Apps for Education

What Google Apps for Education Offers

When designing Google Apps for Education, the team at Google looked at the increasing productivity and satisfaction that personal users had with the technological innovations at their disposal, and compared that to the technology being implemented in schools. What they found was that, while individual consumers were increasingly happy with the technology at their fingertips, schools were not reporting the same level of satisfaction. With Apps for Education, Google is changing all of that.

Google’s Apps for Education offers schools free use of collaborative programming, such as Google Docs, a personalized start page and Google Sites, as well as communication tools, like Google Talk, Google Mail and Google Calendar. This combination of programs provides numerous benefits to educators.

Benefits of Google Apps for Education:

Real Time Collaboration through the Cloud

What Google Apps for Education provides that few other services have is a way for students and faculty to interact in real-time. Real time collaboration makes working as a group more efficient. This is seen particularly well in online classes, where teachers and students do not meet face to face.

In this scenario, a professor can assign a project to a group of students and place the file within the system for all to access. Students, regardless of their geographic location, make changes to the file in real-time, and when the group is finished, they submit the final draft to the professor via the Google App. The professor can oversee and make suggestions throughout the process, if necessary, because he or she will maintain real-time access to the file.

Greater Accessibility

Schools and universities that have implemented Google Apps for Education give their educators greater accessibility to stored data. With the program, which is entirely secure, educators can access their data and documents with any Internet-ready device. If a teacher wants to check on a project or have a conversation with a student while on a laptop at the local coffee shop, no problem. The Google Apps for Education platform can be accessed anywhere, at any time, as long as the individual has an Internet connection.

Better Communication with Students and Colleagues

One of the foundational features of all Google Apps is communication. The Apps for Education program fosters faster, more efficient communication between teachers and their colleagues and students. A teacher can instantly message the entire class to alert them to a change in an assignment, and colleagues can make plans for school events through instant messaging and email technology.

Google estimates that 14 million students and teachers around the globe are currently using Apps for Education. By providing greater collaboration opportunities through the cloud, better communication and improved accessibility, Google is becoming an integral part of the modern education system, and today’s teachers are thankful for the changes it has brought to their classrooms. How many of you feel that modern education system should be out of School and should happen in real world. Here is an interesting video by a student against schooling. You can find full text here:

When you’re reviewing an application or just talking about it, the first thing you’d want to do is take screenshots of the same. Now, we’ve already taught you how-to take screenshots on your Android device, iPhone and Symbian devices. It’s pretty simple, taking a screenshot, but there are some advanced ways too.

Record Android Screen

Recording a screen is even better than just taking a screenshot. For example, if you’re reviewing a really cool app or testing something on your device and want to show it others, screenshots are not cool. The person who’d be reading your review won’t really enjoy looking at the picture, unless there’s a video in the end. Now this kind-of-tutorial is for Android users only and yes you’d require an Android device that’s rooted.

We will be using an app to record android screen and share it on your blog, YouTube or wherever you want. So, since this is not really a step by step tutorial, you won’t have to break your head about following it.

The android screen recorder app we’ll be using to capture the screen on your Android device is known as ScreenCast & Screen Recorder. This app can record your screen at 15-50 frames per second, which is quite fast, and also take screenshots and share them on the go. And that’s why this app is awesome. It can record your screen, edit and rename recorded files and also benchmark your Android device.

How to use Screencast to Record Android screen?

After you’ve downloaded this app, you will have to select the Record button to start recording your screen.

The recorded items will be stored in your Internal Storage. It has it’s own gallery to view and play the recordings.

Android Screen recorder

Currently, the screenshot feature and also a pretty useful live streaming option is being worked on by it’s developers. Expect them to be available soon. However, since this is such an amazing and useful application, it will be priced at $2.99 for the full version without ads and no recording limitations. Yes, this means that the free version will have a limitation of 30 seconds.

  • Download ScreenCast & Screen Recorder Free.
  • Download ScreenCast & Screen Recorder Paid.

Do let us know if you are using any other app to record the screen of Android devices (tablet and Phones)?

This is not the first software to record a voice conversation on Skype, there are quite a few, such as CallGraph. But, all the others aren’t as advanced as the one that I’m going to talk about.

You can just about do anything with the settings and improve or compress the quality and size of the call that you’re about to record. MP3 Skype Recorder is a really nice and advanced software to Record Skype Calls in high quality audio.

MP3 Skype Recorder Software:

This software also records conference and SkypeOut calls and lets the user know when it starts recording, the duration of the call, the quality it’s being recorded at and other call information. So, whenever you start recording a call on your system, this will let you know right away by showing a pop-up window at the bottom.

MP3 Skype Recorder

As you can see in the screenshot above, MP3 Skype Recorder includes the option to select what bitrate you want to record the call at, recording mode and the usual start, stop and play button. Unfortunately, this software doesn’t have a built in audio player, so when you click on play it will direct you to the saved recordings folder. You can change the folder to save the skype recordings from the software, but if you don’t want to then you’ll find the default directory under C:\Users\XYZ\AppData\Roaming\MP3SkypeRecorder\MP3.

Record Skype CallsIf you want to turn off the recording software, then you can do it directly from Quick Launch. You can even exit the program from here. If you leave recording on, then it will start recording the moment you start a Skype Call or receive one. Once the recording is complete, it will show you another pop-up with the recording name with the option to play it using your default Audio player.

MP3 Skype Recorder works only on Windows operating systems and you can download it for free from here.

Have you ever tried recording your Skype conversation using any other methods? Give this a try and let us know what do you prefer?
