Ever thought that you can pay at any shop or store from your Smartphone, well a highly innovative start-up company with the name of Square has developed a real-world based payment application that will be operational from your mobile device. At present this technology by Square is only limited to 50 vendors across US but it is expected that this innovative method of e-payment will be an instant success once more of the businesses will start adopting it.

How the Virtual Wallet App will Work?

iPhone Card Case

To use this service, users will have to download “Card Case” which is a virtual wallet app. The Card Case app will eventually add a virtual credit card number for each of the vendor for the facilitation of payments. Once this payment service is ON, users visiting any shop will just have to pull-out their card and tap on “Start tab” that will mark them as an active shopping customer.

The teller then sums up the purchases and starts a scan for any active customers having virtual wallet app activated, it then selects the appropriate Card Case app user and request payment from them. In this way customers can enter and leave the shop with their shopping bags full without ever having to take their wallet out. Good thing is that there is no need of paper receipts and this payment system also supports multiple of businesses that are supported by Square.

Card Case app is not merely available as an app that can be downloaded simply from the App store, you first have to visit a retailer that is participating in this deal. The retailer will in-return scan the card and a text message containing a link for setup will enable you to download the app. For more information about this innovative venture of Square, you can visit the official website of Card Case app and Square.

What do you think about this payment system? What might be the security risks? Do share your thoughts with us in comments.

Every time someone mentions innovation and mobile phones in the same sentence, people start thinking of Amoled Screens, 12 mega pixel cameras or NFC. However a lot of less sexy innovations have made the mobiles more useful/ accessible to millions of Indians in an affordable manner.

IBall Aassan: A phone for the elderly

IBall AasaanIn a world where every company is busy thinking of cool ideas to appeal to the younger generation, the requirements of the elderly are neglected quite easily. Most elder people struggle to figure out the functionality of a phone or to identify the keys. Simply by making use of larger buttons and dual language support, IBall has made use of mobile phone hassle free for the elderly people. The one click SOS button is the most useful feature of the phone. Basically you can store some numbers as the SOS number and the user of Aasaan can call the number by simply pushing the SOS key(present on the backside of the phone) downward, without having to remember how to navigate to the contact book, find your mobile and then make a call.

Intex Vision

Intex Vision : A phone for visually challenged people

The phone has got a brailey keyboard so that people without vision can use it without much problem. The phone can also speak the keys loudly to enable easy use for blind people. Similar to the IBall Aasaan, the Intex Vision has a SOS call button at the back. The user can store upto four numbers and then make a call with simple touch of the key.

Projector Phone:

There is no way to miss the TVC for Spice Popkorn, which is a projector phone. The projector phone converts the mobile phone into the main source of entertainment for a lot of people. The phone includes an analog TV chip and supports lot of free TV channels, thereby increasing the rate of TV penetration in India which in turn will result in increased awareness level. This is not the first phone to carry a projector. However this seems to be the first one that will take the concept to the masses.

Micromax Marathon Battery Phones

One of the biggest challenges for mobile usage in the rural India is the lack of power. There are many villages in India which do not get power at all or feel lucky to get power for a couple of days in a month. Charging the mobile can involve a 40 km travel in such places. To ease such issues Micromax came up with the marathon battery series phones. It is not unusual for such phones to have 70 hours of talk time and more than a month of stand up time. Without this feature ,the penetration of mobiles in India would have been really low. (P.S: I could not find if marathon battery was used by other companies before Micromax. Please let me know in the comments if you have any information)

Nokia 1100 – The phone with a torch:

The marathon batteries keep the mobiles on during power cuts while with Nokia 1100, Nokia tried to make people’s lives easier during power cuts. The Nokia 1100 was the first phone to come with a built in torch. If you are not convinced about the impact of such a simple idea, then go through this article by Wharton. This 2008 article actually uses this as one of the reasons for Nokia’s success in India.

These five phones go on to prove that the bottom of pyramid is not just a theory. It is very much possible to innovate and profit from mobiles selling below 10,000. Let us know if there is some other affordable innovation that you are aware of.

Google Chrome, nowadays is the most used browser and with the launch of Chrome books, Google chrome would be the most certain choice when it comes to browsers. If Chrome is your default browser, then it is very certain that it may contain very private information which might be confidential and not to be shared with anyone. Sometimes, your friend, your bro or sis or whoever accesses your computer(or laptop) and opens up Chrome. Then he or she might just check out your private information. You might be thinking is there a way to get out from this prob. Let me give you some relief by saying, Yes there is!

Simple Startup Password is a Google Chrome extension which password protects you’re browser. It asks for a password every time you start Google Chrome.

Are you wondering how to set the password? Don’t wonder, read on!

1. Install the extension from here.
2. Click on the ‘wrench’ icon –>  tools –> extensions.
3. Find “Simple Startup Password” and click on “Options”.
4. Set the password.

*Don’t laugh at the notification* Thats it! Simple?  Of course it is simple. Now, the next time you open Google Chrome, you will see a text box asking for the password but I have a warning for you. Don’t forget the password because if you do, you won’t be able to get the password back because the remind feature isn’t working. You would have to re-install Google Chrome for using it again. This plugin is necessary in order to protect your browser from use by unauthorized persons. This extension is nice and easy to use.

If you want to change the password you can change it in the same way you used when you set the password. Using this extension no unauthorized person can get the opportunity to access your Google Chrome and all your private documents would remain private.

Split Screen is a Google Chrome extension which prompts the user for two URL addresses and then displays both in one window. When you use this extension you don’t have to switch tabs back and forth and back and forth and back when you are comparing something or referring something. This extension can be used very easily with no problems plus it is from a verified author so no problem at all. It is great for cross-reference studying and surfing the web in general.

Another great thing is that it has a customizable page using which we can change the settings easily and comfortably, check out the screenshot.

Also, there is a space where you can write anything and it would be saved for the next time you visit that page. This is another awesome thing. You can save your blog links in it for promotion so that you just have to copy it from there. It is not possible for a thing to be all good and have nothing bad. Even this extension has a negative point. The secure Https pages will not work because they have a framekiller and jump out of the frame command.

With all the things told, let me tell you how can you view two webpages in a single tab.

1. Install the extension from here.
2. Click on the icon on the top right.
3. Now, you will have 2 sections and 2 URL boxes.
4. Enter the URLs you want to see.
5. Press the “Enter” button.
6. Voila! All done, check out the example.

It’s as simple as that. This extension is very useful for comparing purposes. You can also turn on autofill to make typing URLs faster. This extension worked very well for me and I definitely suggest you to try it. You will definitely like it.

So, what do you think of the extension? Would you try it? Do comment.

With the Apple iPhone 4 releasing in India via Airtel and Aircel, and the superb offers which it comes with, more Indian consumers are surely going to lap up this beautiful phone. So with more and more people starting to use the iPhone in general, we seriously need to look into boosting the iPhone’s battery life. Here are a few useful tips, some old a couple of new ones which are sure to boost your iPhone’s battery life.

  1. Stop Installing all those Magical Cydia Apps.
There is no doubt that you can make your iPhone do crazy things such as run screensavers, make room for widgets on your lock screen, make all the icons bounce on your home screen and more thanks to Cydia. Doing all that will obviously effect your battery life and also in rare cases crash your iPhone. Use only those Cydia Apps that you think are really useful for you.
  2. Turn off location services.
A lot of apps tap the iPhone’s GPS when they don’t really need to. Go to Settings>Location Services, and disable the feature for the apps that don’t really need the location check.
  3. Turn off notifications.
Simultaneously, in the Settings >Notifications – turn off all unnecessary sounds, alerts, home screen badges. The apps that actually use these features are the same ones that monitor your phone – thus cutting your battery life.
  4. Terminate background apps manually.
Apple says background apps aren’t technically “running” unless they’re front and center, meaning they shouldn’t be drawing any power. Though its said that manually shutting down background apps gives you extended bat-life, its pretty annoying shutting down these apps time and again, so don’t overdo it.
  5. Keep it out of your pocket.
The hotter your iPhone gets, the faster your battery will die. And sliding your phone into your pocket does just that – body heat, you know. Clip your phone to your belt, in a nice vented pouch. It’ll work wonders for your iPhone.
  6. Turn off Ping.
Ping is a huge drain on the battery, and not many people use it. So if you aren’t using it, why let it suck out your battery?

These few simple steps can lead to a Happy and content iPhone and user.
