Sony Ericsson, the mobile phone manufacture, who hasn’t been doing so well in recent times, is going to be bought by Sony. Yes, that’s right, starting from January 2012, there will be no Sony Ericsson, but just Sony, and the SE mobile phones will bear the brand name Sony. This break up was long rumored, and finally it has now happened.

In an official Press release, Sony announced that they’ll be ending their partnership with Ericsson and will therefore buy all of their stakes in the company. Ericsson and Sony were 50-50 partners, thus Sony had to purchase 50 percent shares that Ericsson owned, which amounts to about 1.05 billion Euros. Sony’s Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and President, Sir Howard Stringer said;

This acquisition makes sense for Sony and Ericsson, and it will make the difference for consumers, who want to connect with content wherever they are, whenever they want. With a vibrant smartphone business and by gaining access to important strategic IP, notably a broad cross-license agreement, our four-screen strategy is in place. We can more rapidly and more widely offer consumers smartphones, laptops, tablets and televisions that seamlessly connect with one another and open up new worlds of online entertainment. This includes Sony’s own acclaimed network services, like the PlayStation Network and Sony Entertainment Network. We can help people enjoy all our content – from movies to music and games – through our many devices, in a way no one else can.

He also confirmed that Sony will stop the production of Walkman or other feature phones and will only stick to Android based smartphones. This will give them more control over the integration of all their products and devices such as TV’s, Notebooks, Tablets etc. The deal has been confirmed and Ericsson will move on to concentrating more on wireless technologies and making wireless communications faster and better. It’ll be finalized in January 2012 and henceforth, Sony and Ericsson will not be seen together.

All your Sony Ericsson devices will be called by the name Sony and new products will carry the same name as well. Sony might also buy HP’s WebOS, there is a slight chance that might happen. We will have to wait and watch what happens.

Tablets are the fashion of today’s tech world. I guess, every techie wants a tablet whether he actually requires it or not. Apple iPad 2, Samsung Galaxy Tab, Motorola Xoom, HTC Flyer and the list goes on. All of these tablets are just too magnificent and would be the first choice when someone wants a tab.

But you don’t get something by making it your choice. Costing from Rs. 29,000 to Rs. 40,000 these tabs remain the desire for many. The budget is the main constraint for a lot of people and that’s why they usually skip their plan of buying a tab.

What they forget here is that, there are some affordable tabs available as well. That’s why, I present you Top 3 Entry Level Tablets Available in India.

1. iBall Slide

It launched very recently, around a month back and gathered a lot of good reviews from around the web and the country. It marked the entry of iBall into the Tablets department after trying in Mobiles and definitely computers and computer accessories.

iBall Slide comes with a 7 inch capacitive touchscreen. It has a 512 MB RAM and 8 GB internal memory which can be expanded up to 32 GB using a microSD card. It runs on Android 2.3(Gingerbread). Bluetooth, 3G and Wi-Fi are available. It has a 1 Ghz processor. It has a 2 megapixels rear camera and a front camera is also available. It has a 4400 mAh battery.

The price of iBall Slide is around Rs. 14,000. Costing 14K, this tablet is totally worth of your money. If you buy it you get good quality, good features, good design, all at just Rs. 14K. But wait, there is more.

2. Aakash Tablet

Don’t say you didn’t expect the cheapest tablet in this post. When talking about affordable tablet, one tablet you cannot miss is the Aakash Tablet. By the Indian Government, something that made people happy. Something which make people see that if Government can increase petrol prices, they can get you an affordable tablet.

Aakash comes with a 7 inch resistive touchscreen with 800 x 480 pixels resolution. It has 256 MB RAM and 2 GB internal memory which can be expanded up to 32 GB using a microSD card. It runs on Android 2.2(Froyo). Bluetooth, 3G and Wi-Fi are available. It has a 366 Mhz + HD video co-processor. Battery is up to 3 hours and also comes with an option of solar charging.

The price of Aakash Tablet is around Rs. 3000(normally) and around Rs. 1700 for students. There is no point where you can say that this tab is not worth your money. This tablet may come with a low processor and less battery life, but for Rs. 3K, you can never get any better from this.

3. Reliance 3G Tab

Reliance 3G Tab is one of the most famous affordable tablet because Reliance promoted it quite hugely and that’s why I am sure you would know about it. Reliance 3G Tab is quite similar to iBall Slide in term of specs. Definitely, the specs are little less than iBall Slide but the price is low as well.

Reliance 3G Tab comes with a 7 inch capacitive multi-touch screen with a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels. Internal memory is not available but 4GB microSD card is free with it and the memory can be expanded up to 32 GB. It runs on Android 2.3(Gingerbread). It has a 2 megapixels rear camera and VGA front camera. Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and 3G are available. It has a 3400 mAh battery.

Wow, the features are quite good. The price of Reliance 3G Tab is around Rs. 13,000. This tab is 1K lesser than iBall Slide but most of the features are same excluding battery, internal memory, etc. but yet, according to me, saving 1K and getting almost same tab would be a better choice.

So, they were the Top 3 Entry Level Tablets available in India. Reliance 3G Tab is my choice because it is just Rs. 13K and yet offers a lot of great features. This Diwali, get a tab, get a Reliance 3G Tab.

The Nokia World Event is currently in process and along with adding some new phones to it’s Symbian line-up, they’ve finally gone ahead and announced their first ever Windows Phone 7.5 device. They announced their partnership with Microsoft earlier this year, and after months of wait, the first ever Nokia Windows Phone 7 device is out.

Nokia Lumia 800 is their first every Windows Phone 7.5 device and is exceptionally beautiful, although it basically is a Nokia N9 in disguise with slightly improved hardware. It’s a big day for all Nokia fans out there, as it’s time for them to move to the other side and leave Symbian behind. Well, it’s all a choice. WP7.5 is beautiful and we really love that Metro UI.

As for hardware specifications, not much has been revealed yet, but it sure is a powerful smartphone. With a ClearBlack AMOLED display and 1.4 GHz of Snapdragon processor power, this is going to be running apps real smoothly. It also has 512MB of RAM, an 8 mega pixel Carl Zeiss camera that has an aperture of f/2.2.

There’s more to come. The Nokia Lumia 800 is priced at about $585 and up for pre-order at www.nokia.com. It will be available in France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and the UK starting November. It’ll also be available in Hong Kong, India, Russia, Singapore and Taiwan by the end of this year.

Like we’ve always told, security and privacy and two major aspects of life that no human being would compromise with. Even if it’s only your mobile device that we’re talking about. People like to have their personal/important/classified/military grade top-secret data protected. Here is another app for iOS devices that does that job very well and looks good while doing it. The My Secret Folder app is thus, not a free app, as it promises to protect your data at all times from nosey guys and intruders.

So, how does this app protect your data? Well, My Secret Folder creates a new folder in iOS and names it My Folder, it looks like a folder that contains some apps, but it isn’t. It doesn’t have any apps in it, but instead stores all your important photos, videos and other data that you don’t want everyone else to look at. When you click the folder icon, you’ll have to provide a set password to gain access and you can also set a decoy password, you know just to fool those who’re looking.

If someone tries to break in by trying out codes, the app will automatically take a photo using the front camera and also tag them on a map. So, next time you forget your iPhone at home, you can find out who tried to access the My Folder app. It also shows the number of times someone has tried to break in, as notifications. Lots of settings to fine tune the app and make all your photos and videos very secure. You can move all your private photos and videos to this app and then delete them from the photo album.

As you can see in the screenshot above, the folder looks like any other iOS folder, but inside is some highly confidential data of yours. It works really well and we do recommend it to anyone who’s looking for a good Password protection app. If you’ve jailbroken your iOS device, then you can also try AppLocker.

You can download My Secret Folder from the App Store for only $0.99. Try it out and let us know how it helped keep your photos and videos secure.

Since the announcement of the iPhone 4S and Siri, there have been many attempts to bring out similar apps for other devices. However, most of them have failed and the ones that worked, are not so good overall. We’ve already talked about certain Siri alternatives for iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and also for Android devices. Yet, new apps are still trying to be the next Siri. This one isnt’ like Siri, nor does it respond to your witty questions, but it does something quite useful.

Text by Voice is a free Android app that lets you Send text messages using your voice and also reads out incoming text messages out loud. It’s pretty useful when you’re driving or don’t want to use the keyboard to send a text message. Although, this is the only thing that this app can do, it’s actually very good at it. Unlike other apps that claim to do it all, this one is awesome at just this, sending and reading text messages.

Text by Voice allows you to safely text while you drive entirely through voice. There’s no need to touch or look at the screen at all. Text by Voice will automatically read incoming text messages aloud and give you a chance to respond. You can also set an auto responder for incoming text messages, and have Text by Voice start automatically when you start driving. Text by Voice lets you compose texts on the fly. It runs in the background so you can use other apps at the same time. Drive more safely with Text by Voice.

It’s definitely not a Siri replacement or alternative, but it works. Watch the demonstration video after the break.

You can download Text by Voice from the Android Market.

Try it out and let us know how it worked for you. If you haven’t tried it out yet, then you can do so once you’re in the hospital recovering from an accident caused by texting and driving.

Last week we shared some awesome news on the development of the Siri port for iOS devices, specially the iPhone 4. It looked great, but unfortunately, the developer Jack did not give out any videos as such or any other evidence other than some photos. He also told us that he had only being doing the tests on an iPhone 4, but did however mention that he could get Siri working on any iDevice running iOS 5. Even the iPad.

And today, Jack(@Jackoplane) went ahead and posted some pictures of Siri on iPad, by the looks of which, it seems that it indeed works on the iPad. The only catch, this happens to be a first generation jailbroken iPad, so we are not sure about the iPad 2 and neither is he. Also, there is another major problem. Apple servers don’t respond to Siri in this port too, like the earlier Siri port to iPhone 4 done by  Steven Troughton Smith with the 9to5Mac team. Check out the following screenshots of Siri on iPad.

Jack, the developer who did manage to make Siri respond, or at least that’s what he said, has failed to do so with the iPad. As you can say, this port is not perfect either and is just another work in progress. Let’s see where this leads to. We’ll update you when more progress is made, until then try these Siri alternatives.

We have already told you about the semitethered jailbreak for iOS 5 that was recently released by BigBoss. Using this Cydia package, you can reboot your iOS device without having to be near your PC or connect to it. It’s useful, but it also has some bugs in it that won’t let you use certain apps and jailbreak tweaks.

However, it is still better than a tethered jailbreak. To perform a semitethered jailbreak, you’ll first need to tethered jailbreak you iOS 5 device, except iPad 2, using the latest version of Redsn0w or Sn0wbreeze. Once you’ve jailbroken your device, follow the steps below to semitethered jailbreak it. Let me warn you though, this is a beta build and is under constant development, so there will be newer versions coming out soon that’ll work better and will let you use your device to the full extent.

  • After tethered jailbreaking your iOS 5 device using Redsn0w or Sn0wbreeze, open Cydia and head to Sources.
  • In Sources, add the following repo: http://thebigboss.org/semitether.

  • Wait for it download. After the source is added, install SemiTether.
  • Now reboot your device. According to BigBoss, it is not advisable to use this semitether if you’ve not already tethered jailbroken your iOS device.

Here is a summary of what you can and cannot do when in semi-tethered reboot state. Remember, this is only when your device crashed and rebooted on the road and before you got back to your computer to “just boot”. It is better than being stuck in apple logo:

1) Can use phone, sms (text messages)
2) Can use every other stock app on iphone.
3) Cannot use mobile safari
4) Can use other appstore web browsers such as atomic web browser
5) Cannot use mail app. You could install a gmail app from appstore or such instead.
6) You cannot use any jailbreak tweak, app, cydia until you boot tethered.
7) While in the semitether booted state, you should not add a jailbreak ios5 notification such as sbsettings to notifications during this state or your device will be stuck in a respring loop until you get home to “boot tethered”.

Those are all the limitations I have found so far. There may be some others. I may provide a more technical write up on why these limitations exist, but for now it doesn’t really matter. They just do.

That’s it. And Saurik, the creator of Cydia, is working on fixing some issues and a new update to SemiTether will soon be out. You’ll just have to wait. Also, remember, developers are still working really hard on an untethered iOS 5 jailbreak.
