Synergy is a nifty program that will allow you to share your keyboard and mouse with multiple computers across different operating systems. For example, a setup can be made between a Mac and a Windows 7 computer. Check the website often to stay updated with Synergy.

To setup Synergy follow these steps:

On a Mac:

1. Download Synergy and click OK when the box below pops up.

2. Click on the Synergy install icon to begin the process.

I would recommend installing Synergy for current user only to prevent any unwanted changes.

3. Open system preferences and click on the Synergy icon located in the other section.

4. Beneath the general tab, click on “share my keyboard and mouse.” It is important to set this setting on your main computer. Since I use my mac the most, I set it as the server.

5. Click the middle tab titled server configuration. At this point, add your computers so that Synergy will recognize them. You can move the monitors (pictured below) however you want them. This affects how the mouse tracks across both systems. In my setup I move my mouse to the right of the screen to access my PC and reverse to return to the Mac.

Click on the + box on the left hand side to add a computer. The name field is where you put the name of the computer. The name that is entered has to be the same as the computer name. If the names are different Synergy will not work.

To find the name of your Mac, go to system preferences, then sharing, and under computer name it will say “Computers on your local network can access your computer at: Andrew-Macbook.local.” What follows the colon is the name you want to use, without the .local on the end. For example, mine would be Andrew-Macbook).

To find the name of your computer on a Windows machine, right click on my computer and click on properties. In this box it will tell you the computer name.

6. Under the general tab click turn on Synergy. The status in the bottom left hand corner will change to waiting for connections.

On a PC:

1. Download Synergy and save the file when this box below pops up.

Click Next

Click I Agree

Click Next

Click Install

Click finish and Synergy will be installed.

2. Configure Synergy to sync with your server.

Open Synergy and in the box where it says, “Other computer’s host name,” enter in the IP Address of the server (the server in my setup was the mac). Run a test to see if you have connection and once you do, click start and it will minimize and run in the background.

To find the IP Address on a Mac, go to system preferences and click network. Your IP will be listed here.

To find the IP Address on a PC, go to start, then run and type in cmd. Once the black box pops up type in ipconfig and your IP will be listed.

I recommend using static IP addresses on both the Mac and PC. If static IP’s are not used once they update, Synergy will not be able to connect the computers.

That’s it! Go give it a try and let me know how it went in the comments.

Twitter official application for iPhone is testing push notification for it’s

Twitter Push

Twitter Push

official iPhone application. According to a report from Techcrunch:

Twitter is currently internally testing the feature, we’ve confirmed. Interestingly enough, we learned of its existence when the latest version of the app went out yesterday (the universal binary that included Twitter for iPad). It appears that users who have iOS 4.1 installed (which just hit Gold Master for developers, but won’t be official out until next week) get the option to enable Push Notifications for Twitter. They don’t appear to be working yet, but the feature is definitely there.

This is official statement from Twitter authorities regarding Push feature of Twitter for iPhone:

We’ve been testing push notifications internally. When we launched Twitter for iPad, there was a configuration error that caused us to offer push messages to a small set of users. We’ve stopped sending push messages, but users may see an option to turn on push until we release an updated version of the app. So, push isn’t ready yet but we look forward to rolling this out soon.

Push notification for iPhone is going to be very useful but again I might not be enabling this feature as this will work for all @mention and @DM msgs. IF you get like 10 @mention in an hour, this might annoy you and you might like to keep yourself away from this feature.

Meanwhile you might like to check out our previous tutorial on: How to configure and enable Push for Gmail

Few days back Gmail came up with Video calling integration to Gtalk to give competition to Skype and thus to stay ahead in competition Skype came up with its upgraded beta 5.0 version known as beta with 10 way video calling.

Now you can do a lot more with new Skype but there are few bugs as it is yet in beta version. Few of the new features which you will experience with upgraded beta 5.0 version are:

  • 10-way group video calling
  • Skype Home experience
  • Offline instant messaging
  • New contact search and add experience
  • Enhanced call experience under problematic conditions
  • Post call experience
  • General User Interface refresh

To have a better experience with 10 ways video calling you need to have Intel Core2Duo 2 GHz CPU or equivalent with min. required network bandwidth is 1 mbit/s and network speed at least 5 mbit/s. This new Skype version is for Windows only. If any of the users will be having fewer configurations then the quality of video calling will surely get affected. Thus before downloading upgraded Skype beta 5.0 version make sure that you meet above requirements.

Download link of Upgraded Skype 5.0 version

Hope the final version release soon without bugs so that we can enjoy group calling in better way. It will be very useful especially for the team who work virtually. What you think about these new features of Skype? Do share your views.

Archos, a popular French consumer electronics company has launched a whole new lineup consisting of five of its newest and top of the line tablets. These include the low price Archos 28 and 32, medium-low price ranged Archos 43 and Archos 70 and the $300 starting price Archos 101 tablets. A brief overview of the five tablets introduced by Archos is given below:

Archos 28

A 2.8 inch wide, 320×240 resistive touchscreen tablet machine, Archos 28 starts for as low as $99. Considering its low starting price, the device boasts good enough specs for starters with its 600MHz Cortex A8 processor and 4GB of storage.

Archos 32

Another low end and low priced tablet target for the masses, Archos 32 improves on what the 28 has to offer, with a slightly higher starting price of $149.99. This tablet holds a 3.2″ display, 8GB of storage, an 800MHz Cortex A8 processor, and a rear camera that is capable of recording 720p HD video.

Archos 43

Aimed towards those who are into more ‘techy’ tablets, the Archos 43 will give its users just that: a 1GHz Cortex A8 processor, a .35″ thick design, a 4.3″ display, a 2MP camera with 720p HD recording capability.

Archos 70

The first one nudging the doors of the high end tablet market, the Archos 70 holds a capacitive 7 inch wide touchscreen as opposed to the 28, 32 and 43 which are all resistive touchscreens. Also, this ultra-thin tablet (measuring just 0.4 inches maximum width) is also equipped with a front facing camera and has USB and microHDMI ports for accessibility. Price range goes up automatically: the tablets starts at $279.99.

Archos 101

The cream of Archos’ tablet lineup, the 101 packs a solid set of specifications coupled with a large 10.1 inch 1024×600 resolution screen. Also, the 101 runs atop a 1GHz processor along with USB and HDMI options available. The tablet has a starting price tag of $299.99 which is slightly higher than the Archos 70, owing to 101’s bigger screen.

All these tablets from Archos run on Google’s Android operating system and are slated to be released in the market at various times starting from mid-September and continuing through till the end of October. Stay tuned to find out more.

Making playlists of your favorite songs is commonplace today. Several files are merged in media player and then enjoyed without having to change tracks often. Often, when watching videos, especially online, one feels the need to make playlists or merge videos together for a smoother playback experience. Dragontape is a one of its kind online video merging service which allows users to merge their favorite videos from different sources into one and then share it with their friends.

Dragontape is an online web-browser based visual playlist editor, which enables users to merge video files from different online sources into one. Videos merged with Dragontape result in a seamless new video which can be easily shared and embedded as if it was a single file, without the need of replicating the video into various locations and keeping the original location intact. Dragontabe is easy to use with a simple two-field registration page to get started. Once you log in, you can immediately visit the ‘Create New Tape” page which allows you to add videos. Loading the page requires you to have Adobe Flash installed and JavaScript turned on in your browser.

Once the page loads, you can add your favorite videos by entering keywords or pasting the URL of the video in the search box. The search is powered by default YouTube search and you can just drag and drop the videos you want to add and they will be merged. When you’re done adding videos, hit the “Save” button on the page and a merged tape will be created with the files you added. You can then play the resulting tape to check out how it has been arranged and if satisfied, continue to share it with the world.

Sharing the tape you just created is easy and can be done via the Share button displayed in the bottom right corner of the default tape page. Tapes can be shared on social media like Facebook, Twitter, and Google Wave etc.

Dragontape is currently in its Beta version and with such useful utility; one can only imagine how good it will be when its final version rolls out. Recommended visit for all video watching fans out there.
