After the debacle of Windows Vista, people were obviously expecting something better. And windows 7 does not disappoint them. An OS is after all and OS, it need not be something out of this world. What users want is that the OS must have a simple user interface and computing should be easy, not a burden. And this is what windows 7 does beautifully. While it is not perfect, it offers much improved performance and better functionality to the user.

Windows 7 OS

Windows 7 OS

Taskbar is more beautiful and full of features

With a minimalist approach and sincere attempt to rectify the hiccups that users experienced with Vista, Windows7 comes like a breath of fresh air. It has all the features of windows XP, and tries to better some features and hence qualifies to be its worthy successor. Let us begin with the taskbar. This is one area where windows suffered in comparison to other OS in the past, but in Windows7 every attempt has been made to make it more functional for the user. It allows the user to bring any program in the taskbar so that it opens with a single click rather than double click which is required when the program is on the desktop. You also get the liberty to drag and drop items in the taskbar in the order that you like. What is more, when you take your cursor to any program in the taskbar, you get a sneak preview of what it contains, a tool which has been called Aero Peek by Microsoft.

The new concept of Jump List

When you right click on any program in the taskbar, you get to see a Jump List, which includes the sites or documents you have recently visited. It really helps the user as he requires fewer clicks, and takes him quickly to where he wants to go. The user had to go to the start menu, recent documents, and then select what he has been looking for. This is one feature that will certainly be loved by the users.

The Start Menu

Icons can be dragged to be placed in the start menu so that the user can find their access easier. This is the only change in the start menu; otherwise it looks identical to the start menu of Windows vista. When you open the search option and start typing, it narrows down your searches and also organizes the search results in much the same way as jump List does.

The Tray

The Tray is the area in which your applications are, and where you have the options to change your settings such as time, volume and power settings. It is also the place from where alerts pop up. The user has the ability to set them to appear only if there is any notification, or never appear at all. After all nobody wants to see those messy pop ups all the time.

Easy Wireless Access

As soon as you click the wireless icon, you get to see the list of available networks, and it is up to the user to choose one of them.

Action Center

Out goes the infamous security red shield and its place is taken by a good looking white flag called Windows Action Center, which brings windows alerts and lapses, if any in the anti virus you may be using.

Snap and Shake Windows

This is a welcome feature which enables one to shrink windows into half so that he can split the work space when using two applications at the same time.

Libraries

This is a new feature that allows the user to see all the files of one media type at one place. To add a file to the library, one just needs to right click and then select include in Library.

Are you a windows 7 user? Do let us know your viewpoint about Windows 7.

Android developers have released yet another update to the Android Gingerbread OS, which adds more NFC based features for developers to experiment and work with. The new version number is 2.3.3, and although it is only a minor update from the previous 2.3.2 version, it adds a lot of new features for phones with NFC hardware. The Google Nexus S then, will definitely get this update quite soon.

This new Android build will enable developers to write to tags and create easier peer-to-peer connections. The API also adds new applications that could be used for ticketing, providing ratings and bill payments, check-ins, advertising and sharing of data with other NFC capable devices.

The Android 2.3.3 build is now available for download via the Android SDK. Visit Android Developers for more information and downloads.

The Apple iPad is truly a wonderful device, and thanks to all those free applications out there, it can do almost everything that you would do on a normal computer/laptop. You can watch movies, play games, read your favorite books and do lots more with your iPad. Now though, you can also watch free TV on your iPad thanks to BBC’s new iPlayer App. The British Broadcasting Corporation recently announced that they’ll be officially launching the iPlayer App for the iPad. An Android version is also in the making.

With the BBC iPlayer App you can watch those popular most watched programmes and also enjoy live radio tunes on your iPad. You can also browse through the program schedules and decide what you’d like to watch. The App has been optimized and designed for the iPad and has a very simple user interface.

The iPlayer App is now available for download via the App Store. The App is free, but once it brings international programmes then you may have to subscribe and shell out some money. Right now only programmes from BBC network are available.

I use Nokia OVI Suite with my Nokia phone to transfer media as well as send/receive text messages through my computer. Recently I had an unusual problem regarding Nokia OVI Suite.

clip_image001

When I used the cable to plug my phone into my computer, it was recognized as an external device by Windows however Nokia OVI Suite did not detect the phone.

After numerous attempts in which I unplugged and then plugged the phone and hoped the problem to automatically solve itself, I Google’d for answers. The only ‘solution’ I found was to reinstall the Nokia Cable Drivers. If you are facing the same problem, then let me save your time by telling you that simply reinstalling these drivers will not solve the problem at all.

If your Nokia phone is not being detected by the OVI or PC Suite software while being detected by your Windows OS, then follow these steps to solve the problem. I have learned that these 12 steps are the only solution to the problem.

1. Unplug the phone from your computer.

2. Uninstall all Nokia related applications. These applications include Nokia OVI / PC Suite, Nokia Cable Drivers, and PC Connectivity solution.

3. Restart your computer.

4. This step is necessary only in a few cases. If you do not have one already, install a registry cleaning application. My recommendation is CCleaner along with Registry Mechanic. Clean your registry using these applications.

5. Restart your computer.

6. Install Nokia OVI Suite or PC Suite, whichever is your preference. Make sure that you have the latest setup file.

7. Download the Nokia Cable Drivers setup files from your region’s official Nokia website.

8. Install the Nokia Cable Drivers setup file.

9. Restart your computer.

10. Plug in your phone and wait while its drivers are installed by Windows.

11. Restart your computer.

12. Run Nokia OVI / PC Suite. Your phone will now be detected by the application.

I know a lot of Restarts are involved. But patiently follow the steps exactly and you would have solved the problem.

Sharing the websites we like on our social network of choice usually involves two steps: copying the website’s URL and then pasting it on our network.

To shorten this procedure, there are various browser extensions and add-ons that paste the link directly to your social network. However these extensions only support one or a few social networks. If you want something that lets you quickly share a webpage across almost all social networks, then check out AddInto.

clip_image002

AddInto is a browser extension for Google Chrome that makes it easier and quicker to share the websites you like. The extension adds a new blue ‘plus’ button in the address bar of Chrome. When you are on a website you want to share, just click on the button and select the network of your choice from the dropdown menu.

clip_image004

The networks that are shown in the dropdown menu can be modified by accessing the extension’s options. In the options you find a list of virtually all online networks that you can share sites on; more than 100 networks can be seen in this list. Select the sites you want added in the default view so you can quickly share sites on them.

clip_image006

The extension also maintains a history of all sites you have shared through it. the history can be viewed at the bottom of the Options page.

clip_image008

The extension also lets you clear the history as well as disable the history-saving feature.

Its simplicity of use and wide support for networks makes AddInto a valuable Chrome extension to have.
