Three words best describe this very very useful web client for sharing files, “Share. Files. Fast.” CloudApp is a web based client for Mac OS X that can be used to share files such as images, music, videos etc just by dragging the required file and dropping it on the Menubar. Once you select the file to upload and drag it to the menubar CloudApp will provide you with a short URL that will automatically be copied to the clipboard for later use.

And because this is a web client, you’ll have to register at GetCloudapp to make use of this free and fast file sharing service. You can also drag and drop files from Finder, access it from your iPhone through the web client and also make new shortcuts to upload files directly from various Mac Applications like iTunes, iPhoto and more. There are plug-ins available for such applications known as Raindrops, which enable the direct upload feature on applications. Soon there will also be an iPhone App to upload and share files, but until then you can use Cloudette to manage and view your shared files on your iPhone/iPod Touch and Cloud2Go(third-party app) to also upload images and other files.

CloudApp requires Mac OS X 10.5 and above and to download the Raindrop plug-ins you can visit this page.

Tell us what do you think of this file-sharing service. And to clear doubts, this is for users who like to share pictures, music, videos, screenshots etc of small sizes because the upload limit of a single file is 250mb and you can share up to 25 items in a day.

As the average file size increases, the way that we handle data backup and storage must also evolve.

There are a wide variety of options available when it comes to choosing a secure backup plan, and different backup storage devices are designed to meet specific needs for specific users. Consider the following backup options when designing your data backup plan.

1. Determine the quantity of files that you will be backing up, as well as approximate file sizes. Will you be backing up your entire system, or just specific files that are more important?

2. Keep in mind that this amount is going to grow in the future, and your data storage and backup needs will grow over time.

3. Determine what your budget is for backup storage devices like NAS storage options and other backup and storage media options.

4. Consider the types of files that you intend to archive. If you will be archiving files that you need to be able to reach, such as music or photographs, then you need a portable media that you can access easily.

Once you have a basic idea about what you need to store and how much space and flexibility or portability you need, you can start appraising some of the options that are available to you. These are just some of the options that would allow you to easily backup and store your files:

Portable Media: You can use a Zip drive and Zip discs, a CD-RW drive and CDs or a Jaz drive depending on how much data you are backing up. A Zip drive or CD-RW drive will reasonably handle smaller backup needs. Jaz drives and external hard disks will help you when you need a lot of storage space. These are all essentially do-it-yourself or DIY backup and storage options.

Network Attached Storage: Also referred to as NAS storage, this is a storage option that works well if you need easy access to your files, because they are available on a server for easy reaching. You can run your own NAS or you can hire help during the setup process depending on your tech proficiency.

Online Storage: Online storage options range significantly in price and features depending on needs. DropBox, for example, offers 2 gigabytes of space for free, and you can buy more space as needed and host your files online where you can reach them easily.

Once you have a secure backup plan in place, back up your files regularly. Weekly or bi-weekly is generally ideal when you use the computer on a daily basis. Keep this in mind when putting your backup plan into action, especially if writing files to thumb drives, CDs or similar media that can only handle so many writes and rewrites.

So in other words…

Your data backup plan should be unique to fit your needs, as each computer user is going to have distinct needs based on what matters most to them.

If security, data protection and consistent backups are your priorities, then the aforementioned backup plan options are sure to benefit you.

The blogosphere these days are brimming with Apple mania, with the speculations of iPad 2 and the latest release of new line of Macbooks Apple is surely gearing up for a big year as far as its products are concerned. Amongst all these news and speculations, Apple has recently announced that their latest Operating system, Mac OS X 10.7 Lion will boast a brand new feature called as ‘Air Drop’. Although from the functionality point of view, AirDrop sounds very much simple but it will eventually prove to be useful for those users who are either using multiple computers or those who frequently share files with other users. One compulsion in usage of AirDrop is that all users have to have same WiFi network. As per Apple’s description of AirDrop the interface will also be very cool. Here is an excerpt from Apple’s description of AirDrop: Apple-AirDrop-feature

How to use AirDrop?

Well in order to use AirDrop you have to be nearby a WiFi hotspot plus your PC or a Mac must be having the latest WiFi hardware. To initiate it, you have to open the AirDrop panel on all the devices amongst which you want to make it work, then wait for Macs to pop-up on AirDrop panel search screen. Once done then all you need to do is drag the files that you want to transfer via AirDrop and click confirm. Apple is also planning to release fixes for AirDrop in upcoming builds and versions.

iChat is the IM tool from Apple that supports voice and video chat on your Mac Device through Google Talk, AOL and Apple’s iChat server. Recently Apple pushed out the developer preview for the upcoming Mac OS X Lion operating system on February 24 and since then all those Apple developers out there have been curiously finding out new updates and developments with the Lion. Of course you’ll have to be a developer to lay your hands on the preview for Mac OS X Lion and to see what’s new.

A certain developer iMarck90 discovered a new feature with the standard IM Client iChat on the new OS X Lion that enables a user to add Yahoo Messenger to the Client and use features such as Voice and Video chat. This was not possible with the older Mac OS X Leopard because Yahoo uses a different protocol and cannot connect with AOL or other chat clients. In OS X Lion though you can add your Yahoo account, but only chat with other Yahoo friends. It still doesn’t support Windows Live Messenger/Hotmail though.

To find out whats new in Mac OS X Lion(10.7) visit Apple. You can download the preview from the Apple Developer website using your member id.
