Not many people know that now you don’t need a computer (unlike earlier) to locate iOS device and you can do it while on the go with a friend’s iPhone with this free official Find my iPhone app from Apple.
The Find my iPhone feature of Apple’s MobileMe is of great utility and the latest iOS 4.2 firmware made the service free for latest generation iPhones and iPods. The next time when you are on the road and need to find lost iPhone or iPod Touch just download the Find my iPhone app from App Store on any iPhone/iPod Touch or iPad around you and login using your Apple ID.
Apple’s me.com when accessed from iOS devices does not allow you to Locate iOS devices and until the release of this app you always needed a Windows or Mac Computer to track the device.
What all Find My iPhone app can do?
- Locate your iPhone or iPad on a map
- Display a message and optionally play a sound for two minutes at full volume (even if your device is set to silent)
- Remotely set a passcode lock on your device, or lock it using your existing passcode
- Remotely wipe your device to permanently erase all of your personal data
Please note that before you use this the “Find my iPhone” service must be set up and turned on on each device that you want to locate. The Application itself needs to be installed only when you want to locate it from some other device. The App has a security measure which automatically signs you out after 15 minutes unless you manually sign out. This is necessary as one’s location is a primary part of his privacy and you would not want someone else to have unlimited access to it.

With the increasing numbers of iOS devices around the world this is a great initiative on Apple’s part. I don’t know of any other cellphone or PMP manufacturer who has this service. Correct me if I’m wrong on this. This alone would encourage a lot of customers to go Apple. They have made the ways to find lost iPhone or iPad free and easy with these new additions.
