Google voice is one free service from Google which will let you make free voice call in U.S.A. This service is currently available only in U.S.A. In this tutorial I will be sharing how you can get Google Voice account and number if you are in any other country including India.
To get started with first you need a U.S.A based incoming number to verify your Google voice account. To get a Free U.S.A based Incoming number, read my previous tutorial on How to get Free U.S.A. based incoming phone number.
Getting started with Google Voice Account:
If you will try to open Google Voice website from any other country apart from U.S.A you will be prompted with message that Google Voice is not available in your country. To get rid of this issue, you need to use a U.S based proxy. You can either take help of any of these free VPN service ( Do check which VPN service offer U.S based IP) or you can use proxy software like HotSopt hotshield and Ultrasurf.
In this tutorial I used combo of HotSpot hotshield and Ultrasurf. <Download Hotshied> <Download Ultra surf>
Install Ultrasurf and Hotshield. Start Hotshield and after that Ultrasurf.
Google Voice Account:
Now you are on a U.S based proxy site and you can access Google Voice website. <Link>. Now use your Gmail account to login to your Google voice account and follow the steps mentioned to get a Google Voice account for yourself.
Select Google Voice Number:
First step is to select a Google voice number for yourself, which you can do by adding a word or your desired number. Follow screenshots:
Set Pin number for Google Voice account:
Next step is to set a PIN for your voice account so that you can use voicemail feature of Google Voice account.
Add a forwarding phone:
In this step you need to add your incoming U.S mobile number which we already got using my previous tutorial. That number will also be used to verify your Google voice account, so make sure you enter the number which you have and keep your softphone open, as you will be receiving a call on your phone to verify.
Verify your Phone:
Now on the next screen you will see a code and link to call on your phone. Click on the link and you will be receiving a phone on your softphone. You need to type that code after accepting the code and instantly your Google voice account will be activated.
That’s it and now you can make free phone call to U.S.A and receive call from U.S.A for free using your Google voice account.

@Guna Is your Softphone open.. You are supposed to receive a call on your Softphone number and you have to dial those two codes which you get at last step to verify yourself..!!

The trick is, pick up. wait for 14-15 seconds, then dial the code, you’ll be done.
Do not hang up. Wait for it to auto hang up.

I understand your questions and it was confusing for me at initial point but yes here are things:
1. You can stop using proxy site/software now.
2. You can uninstall Xlite but you need to change your Google voice setting to forward call and sms to Gtalk

and one more thing. IpKall and Tpad says inactive numbers are deactivated within 30 days, so wouldn’t uninstalling xlite automatically deactivate the Tpad sip account ?

That free call is because of free credit of $.10 which you get when you sign up for GVC.

Nice post Harsh. But I wonder what happens when Google eventually rolls out Google Voice worldwide – as they must do at some point. You’ve linked a US Google Voice number to your Gmail account. I wonder if in future you’d be able to change this to your local Google Voice number – or if you’re now stuck with the US number.

I got a # from IPKall, but when I try registering it with GVC, I get the following error: This number is already being used on two other Google Voice accounts. Forwarding numbers cannot be shared across more than two accounts.

Mahesh this is a known error..I would suggest try and try again.. It sounds funny but many people got it done after 19th attempt..Else wait for couple of hours and try again..!!

Nope you cant use your local indian number for now until google voice is released to the international public.
Btw, Harsh I was wondering if there is any cheap call forwarder service available? Coz it would be great if i can forward that us no. To my mobile no.
i tried all the steps. When i enter the forwarding phone number,the one that I got from ipkall.com, google voice registration shows an error message that says this number is already being used on two other accounts and cannot be shared further.

You have also mentioned somewhere tht u got it in 19th try, i think i did so many and with a gap of an hour or so, but no luck!!!

@ Chaitanya and Shael: I too faced the same problem, I was able to register it only after signing up for Tpad and Ipkall for 3 different gmail ids which I already had! Luckily , the IpKall number for my 3rd account was free..Try signing up for different gmail ids if you have patience!

I wanted to know that i’m an iPhone user and downloaded Google Voice app for iPhone .
I then tried to call a usa number from my google voice mobile app and it connected .
But to my surprise it was using my network instead of google voice and i was charged with rs. 15 for 2 minutes ….
So could you please tell me how to call from google voice on iPhone for free ??

I installed HotSpot hotshield and Ultrasurf as mentioned above. But whenever I try to open my Google voice account it say ” Not available in your country”. Why is this ? I cleared all the cookies and tried but problem persisted. Though I haven’t received Google Voice Account Invitation. I just created new account and tried through this new account. Is the invitation necessary ?
