Guide to Jailbreak iOS 4.0 on iPhone 3G redsnOw (Windows)

We had just told you about the public release of the iOS 4.0 for iPhone and iPod Touch and in no time the Dev Team has made available to us a working jailbreak. So all of you who were awaiting a Jailbreak solution before you upgraded your firmware now is the time to take that leap.

For Your Info:
Jailbreak, in brief, is the process of freeing your Apple device from the restrictions imposed by the manufacturer. It’s a software installation which will hence give you ability to install third party applications including those unapproved by your carrier or Apple.

This guide will help you jailbreak your iPhone 3G using a software called RedSn0w on Windows. This tutorial has been tested and works for iPhone 3G having official 4.0 firmware(not the GM Seed) If your iPhone firmware version is older you can get 4.0 firmware here and upgrade in iTunes and then proceed as follows.

Jailbreak Instructions:
A. Upgrade iTunes to version 9.2 and then upgrade iPhone to iOS 4.0 We assume you have already done this.
B. Locate the relevant firmware file(.ipsw) on your computer or get it from here.
C. Download RedSn0w from here and extract the archive. Launch the executable file Redsn0w.exe

Click on Browse and select the firmware file.

Select the options as shown in the picture. You may want to enable multitasking but it’s not such a good idea for 3G given the 128 MB of RAM it has. But yes I did try it when I had the Beta version so you may try it just to get the feel of it. Click on Next.

Connect device and switch it off. Follow the instructions on next screen carefully. Jailbreak-ers are usually accustomed to this traditional method.

Your device will restart once the process is complete. It should take less than ten minutes for the process to complete.

You will now find the Cydia icon on your springboard and also notice an added homescreen wallpaper. :) Btw, that is not the default wallpaper. Enjoy your jailbroken iDevice!

While the following guide has been tested to work for the suggested devices, please proceed at your own risk. Apple classifies this process as illegal and you may void your warranty. We’re also not responsible if your iPhone starts mailing people on distant planets.

Note: This process is absolutely reversible. You can simply restore your device in iTunes and set it up as a new one. You may want to do it before you take it to the Apple store for repairs.

    Hey Rajat,

I did everything exactly like you said and was able to unlock my Iphone 3G. However, I keep getting the “springboard has crashed.” Everytime I restart it, it is the same thing over and over. Do you have any Ideas? I ended up just restoring my Iphone to factory settings, and then restoring from backup just so I can use it normally. It really sucks since I had it cracked with blackrain.

Please help if you can. Thanks.
