Google Announces Samsung and Acer Chromebooks

Google Announces Samsung and Acer Chromebooks

Google announced two new Chrome OS based notebooks, Chromebooks, at the Google I/O Day 2 Keynote on May 11th at Moscone Center in San Francisco, California. Both of these new Chromebooks are running on the all new, 8-second boot Chrome operating system that is nothing more than the web.

Google first unveiled the Samsung Chromebook on stage and then the Acer Chromebook, both powered by Intel Dual Core processors and have an amazing battery life of 8+ hours. Yes, you heard that right!!

Samsung and Acer Chromebooks

The Samsung Chromebook – Series 5

First, let’s talk about the Chromebook from Samsung, it’s sleek, stylish, very light and comes in two colors. The Samsung Chromebook is very sleek at 0.79 inches, but not the slimmest and the best improvement that it has is the new oversized trackpad. Google’s Cr-48 had lots of users complaint about the track-pad. According to Google, the Samsung Chromebook has a brand new trackpad that works really well. Samsung Chromebook

The Samsung Series 5 Chromebook will be available for order starting June 15 on both Amazon and Best Buy stores in U.S and few other countries.

$429 for the Wi-Fi only Samsung Chromebook and $499 for the in-built 3G one.

Here are the official specifications from the Press release.

  • 12.1″ (1280×800) 300 nit Display
  • 3.26 lbs / 1.48 kg
  • 8.5 hours of continuous usage 1
  • Intel® AtomTM Dual-Core Processor
  • Built in dual-band Wi-Fi and World-mode 3G (optional)
  • HD Webcam with noise cancelling microphone
  • 2 USB 2.0 ports
  • 4-in-1 memory card slot
  • Mini-VGA port
  • Fullsize Chrome keyboard
  • Oversize fully-clickable trackpad

Here’s a Hands-on for the Samsung Chromebook from Engadget.

The Acer Chromebook

Google also unveiled the second brand to start the sales for Google Chromebooks, Acer. The Acer Chromebook is even smaller than the Samsung, but isn’t as slim. Although, there is something that might help the Acer Chromebook sell more than Samsungs, the price. Acer has priced this laptop at only $349 for the Wi-Fi version, we are not sure how much the 3G is priced of if there even is a 3G version, don’t expect it to be priced much higher. Plus this even has an HDMI port, unlike the counterparts VGA adapter.

Acer Chromebook

Here are the official specifications from the Press Release.

  • 11.6″ HD Widescreen CineCrystalTM LED-backlit LCD
  • 2.95 lbs. | 1.34 kg.
  • 6 hours of continuous usage 1
  • Intel® AtomTM Dual-Core Processor
  • Built in dual-band Wi-Fi and World-mode 3G (optional)
  • HD Webcam with noise cancelling microphone
  • High-Definition Audio Support
  • 2 USB 2.0 ports
  • 4-in-1 memory card slot
  • HDMI port
  • Fullsize Chrome keyboard
  • Oversize fully-clickable trackpad

There is no hand’s-on video for the Acer Chromebook, but as soon as there is one, we will update and let you watch more.

These are the two Chromebooks that were revealed at the Google I/O’s Day 2 Keynote on May 11th. For more information visit Google Chromebook.

Do you like the idea of Chrome OS based netbooks that run only on the Web? Do you think people are ready to adopt to this new line of Chromebooks?

Both of them are having own features. Samsung is having 8+ hours battery life while Acer is having 6 hours. Samsung have a slim body but Acer not. These are the best for net lovers. But if I want any of those I prefer Samsung.

Having 8 + battery hours is really amazing stuff as now days mobiles or smart phones also give a battery of 10 hours at max..
