Now that the Verizon iPhone is here for real after yesterday’s announcement we decided to do a full comparison of both the AT&T iPhone 4 and the Verizon iPhone 4. Let’s see what are the differences and what is new? What changes are going to matter and which ones will go just unnoticed.
iPhone 4 Antenna Design:
Well, I do realize that the first mention of iPhone 4 antenna design brings Antennagate to your mind. We hope Apple has figured how to solve this problem with Verizon’s CDMA iPhone 4. Even though I haven’t ever experienced a drop in reception due to the antenna(In fact its much better than my iPhone 3G giving me reception in places I did not have reception earlier) some people did mention it time and again.
We noticed that one of the notches present on the iPhone 4’s external antenna has been moved. Whether it’s an attempt to solve reception issues or just a necessary design change when manufacturing CDMA units, is unclear now. However, for users this will just remain a slight aesthetic change that we don’t need to worry about. For Apple fanboys, it might also be an easy way to tell a CDMA iPhone 4 apart from a GSM iPhone 4.
If you look at the Verizon iPhone 4 alongside an AT&T iPhone 4 you will also notice a slight change in the placement of mute button.
Once again, no issues in the aesthetic sense but some iPhone 4 bumpers and cases may not be compatible anymore with the new design. Out of the six iPhone 4 case we reviewed earlier the Apple bumper is clearly no more going to be compatible while the Speck Fitted Case that I got for myself will continue to fit as it has a wide open slot near the buttons.
Everything else remains the same and I’m sure the case manufacturers will be ready in no time with cases compatible with the Verizon iPhone 4.

Firmware & Mobile Hotspot Feature:
The Verizon iPhone 4 was seen running the iOS 4.2.5 firmware. At this point we are not sure if the GSM iPhone 4 is going to get the same firmware update or not. We do believe that there will be different sets of firmwares for both CDMA & GSM iPhones since they work on different technologies.
A striking new feature which seems exclusive to the Verizon iPhone 4 at this point is the mobile hotspot. On the GSM iPhone 4/3GS/3G we can only tether(share) iPhone’s internet via USB or bluetooth with any desktop or laptop computer. The new feature lets you share iPhone’s internet over wi-fi with upto five devices including mobile devices like iPod Touch and not just our computers.
So that’s all there is to the Verizon iPhone 4 vs. AT&T iPhone 4. If you are an existing Verizon or AT&T customer tell us if you are planning to take the leap to a new iPhone? If not do tell us why? We’ll keep you up to date with more Verizon iPhone 4 news as the launch date of February 11 approaches.
