Fix: iTunes Error 1013 while updating iPhone to iOS 4.2

Fix: iTunes Error 1013 while updating iPhone to iOS 4.2

A lot of people, including me, got the iTunes error 1013 during the iOS 4.2 update leaving iPhone stuck in recovery mode. This error is more likely if the device was previously jailbroken. Here’s a quick solution to solve this problem and exit recovery mode.

More iTunes/iPhone Errors Solved:

This is not the first time I got this error during a firmware upgrade and this old trick worked once again for me.

But before that here are a few tips for an error free update/restore:

  • Quit any other application using iPhone(like iPhoto)
  • Always use authentic IPSW from Apple’s Direct Download Links
  • Update iTunes to latest version available

Now, getting back to the solution, if your iPhone is stuck with the recovery screen as shown above and iTunes error 1013, it is very likely that the iOS 4.2 update is already over but iPhone has not been able to exit recovery mode.

This tutorial also works if your iPhone was stuck in recovery mode after a failed jailbreak attempt using limera1n or greenpois0n leaving iPhone in recovery mode.

Here’s what to do:

  • Download Tiny Umbrella for your OS from here
  • Connect iPhone with USB cable
  • Click on Kick/Exit Recovery

Your iPhone should now restart normally and appear in iTunes like before with all your data and playlists intact along with iOS 4.2 update in place, in case you were trying to upgrade firmware.
