portableappsI have many programs which I use and would like to have access to the same applications with my own settings and preferences even on my friends PC.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if you could carry all your frequently used programs with you wherever you go! Just plug in your pen drive and start using them as you do on your own computer without even worrying about the fact that your information may be saved on the host machine.

With PortableApps you can install your applications “Portable” version and take it with you. There are many Open Source software to choose from PortableApps provides a truly open platform that works with any hardware you like (USB flash drive, iPod, portable hard drive, etc). It’s open source built around an open format that any hardware vendor or software developer can use.

Pen Drives have become inexpensive these days. A 2GB one costs around Rs.250 and 4GB costs Rs.430 the last time I checked. Some of the software available are :

  • Firefox – Web Browser
  • OpenOffice – Office Suite
  • Abby Word – Word Processor
  • Sumatra PDF – PDF Reader
  • Notepad++ – Text Editor
  • XAMPP – PHP, Apache, MySQL
  • GIMP – Image Editor
  • Thunderbird – Email Client
  • aMSN Portable – Chat Client
  • 7-Zip – File Compressor
  • InfraRecorder –CD/DVD Burner
  • Many More…

Most of all, PortableApps platform is free. It contains no spyware. There are no advertisements.

Comes in 3 variants :

  • Standard Edition runs comfortably from a 512MB drive.
  • Lite Edition : runs comfortably from a 256MB drive.
  • Base Edition : This is a stripped down package with just the PortableApps Menu and a Backup utility. 1MB only

You can install any software which does not alter the Registry keys. Any software which works by just copy – paste. Open Source software can be easily altered to make them portable because their source is free. Settings and Configurations are stored as files and not the registry making them independent of the System they run on.

If you can alter the Microsoft Office 2007 code and make it Portable then that can be carried on a Pen Drive! Hehehhe
Some Open Source games can be carried like Counter Strike and Quake3
