Five years ago, what started as an internal tool for Google employees is now used by tens of millions of people around the world in 52 languages. In honor of the occasion, you may have noticed a little cake on the Gmail homepage.
I remember, there had been plans of Yahoo Mail going paid for those who wanted a higher capacity mailbox. Inbox was limited to 100MB of web space. SPAM was a nightmare and it was terrible. Then on April 2004 came Google, which launched Gmail. It set a benchmark for all other web based mail services and was the first to offer 2GB per email account! It was a dream come true. AJAX was fairly new and was the preferred choice of Google engineers.
Gmail since has continued adding new features which makes Gmail one of the best web based email services today. Google Apps allows you to use you@yourcompany.com on Gmail servers for free. With over 7GB of online storage which keeps increasing every second and counting its simply the best.
