According to reports, the explosion took place at Foxconn’s iPad 2 assembly line, in the A5 building where most of the parts for the Apple iPad 2 is made. Foxconn is Apple’s top manufacturers for the iPad and this event may cause some problems with the iPad 2 production.

There is no information on what caused the explosion, but Local Police have ruled out foul play and stated this as an accident. They are still at the scene and are investigating the explosion, the loss and how much overall damage it has caused. The explosion is very serious as there were not more than 10 fire engines and ambulances at the scene last night. Among all the employees who were present in the building at the time of the explosion, 2 have succumbed to major injuries and about 16 of them were injured and hospitalized. Foxconn later on issued the following statement regarding the issue;

We can confirm that at approximately 7 pm on May 20, there was an explosion at our Chengdu campus. At this point, we can also confirm that there were two fatalities with injuries to 16 other employees. We are working with medical officials to provide treatment to the injured employees and we are working with government and law enforcement officials to contact the families of all employees affected by this tragedy. The situation has been brought under control by the fire department and the cause of this explosion is being investigated by local police officials. Foxconn is cooperating fully with that investigation. Production has been suspended at the site of the explosion until the completion of the investigation. The safety of our employees is our highest priority and we will do whatever is required to determine and address the cause of this tragic accident.

A video on the aftermath of the explosion also surfaced showing lots of smoke, which the guards say was toxic. Check it out after the break.
