A Practical Speed Comparison of iPhone 2G/3G/3GS/4

We have all read and heard about the specifications and speeds of the various iPhones that have been released yet but that still leaves a user half perplexed as to how different the just released new generation iPhone is from its predecessor. Here’s a very practical comparison made by Mike Hellers and shown on video.

One can notice how much faster the new generation iPhone is compared to the previous releases in day to day use by looking at the launch times of the applications. The mobile safari application is one we use very often. On the other hand more intensive apps like Google Earth and Plants vs. Zombies will show you how much better the RAM and graphics hardware is on the newer iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS.

This video will help you make out the difference in speeds. As you can see for yourself there’s very little and negligible difference in launch times between iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4. So unless it’s Facetime and Retina Display among other features that really appeal to you, you may want to stick to your 3GS and not upgrade for now. We also come to realize that hardware wise(in terms of speed and performance) the iPhone 3GS was a larger leap over iPhone 2G/3G than the iPhone 4 is over the former. Go ahead and take a look at the video for yourself.

Application launch times as observed in video:

Plants vs. Zombies

  • iPhone 4: 8.52
  • iPhone 3GS: 10.64
  • iPhone 3G: 24.20
  • iPhone 2G: 25.68

Google Earth

  • iPhone 4: 20.92
  • iPhone 3GS: 23.96
  • iPhone 3G: 30.20
  • iPhone 2G: 36.56

Seadragon

  • iPhone 4: 7.40
  • iPhone 3GS: 7.68
  • iPhone 3G: 8.72
  • iPhone 2G: 9.24

Yahoo.com on Safari

  • iPhone 4: 6.08
  • iPhone 3GS: 6.84
  • iPhone 3G: 11.48
  • iPhone 2G: 12.08
