The new ipad

The latest to join the queue of the cool tablets flying on the market shelves is the new iPad that Apple rolled out a few months back. The new iPad, iPad3 or third generation iPad…call it by whichever name you wish to, it is undoubtedly one of the coolest gadgets that has become the choice of millions. Now, here is my hands on review of the New iPad after using it for months. I’m sure it will help you to make a decision on to buy it or not to buy.

The new ipad

Frankly, I love the latest gadgets and when it is from Apple, I just can’t resist and finally end up buying one. The latest entry in my gadget world is the new iPad.  Ask me to describe this new gadget in one word and I would say, ‘fabulous‘. I might sound crazy but frankly most share of my hard-earned money goes in buying the gadgets. Before buying the third generation iPad, I was using iPad2 from last 8 or 9 months. After using both the tablets I actually can easily distinguish between the two and share my viewpoint . Though, the new iPad is almost similar to iPad2 lookwise but it comes fully loaded with new features that make it one of the stylishly desirable tablets.

Here I am sharing the positive and negative aspects which I have figured out while using the new iPad that will surely help you to take a decision if you are planning to buy one.

Key features of the New iPad

  • Apple A5X (dual-core with quad-core graphics) processor that make it faster than iPad2 that has A5 processor.
  • One of the groundbreaking features of the new iPad is Retina Display with  2048 x 1536 pixels.
  • It has 4G LTE cellular technology that will allow you to browse internet and download files at superfast speed.
  • Mobile users will be excited to see the inclusion of 4G LTE cellular technology, which offers faster mobile downloads.
  • Another exciting feature that I like in new iPad is its 5 mega pixels/1080p rear camera which is a huge improvement over the iPad2 camera.
  • It is available with 16GB, 32GB, 64 storage capacity unlike iPad which is now only available in 16GB.
  • It is first tablet with Bluetooth 4.0 also known as Bluetooth Smart Ready which will help you in faster data transfer between devices.
  • 10-hour battery life, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n connectivity, 1GB RAM,  1080p video recording at 30fps, , four and five-finger swipe gestures are the other notable features that enhance the overall user experience.

Adding feather to the cap Apple has announced the upgraded operating system – iOS6 that will bring cool features like Siri : Apple’s voice-activated personal assistant, FaceTime over cellular networks to the new iPad.

The new iPad Vs iPad 2 ?

How is the new iPad different from iPad2 is one question that you all might be curious about. Frankly, I was keenly interested in knowing how it  is different from iPad2 when its design is almost similar. No doubt, the new iPad is thicker and heavier than iPad2 but its features like amazing features make it stand apart from iPad2.

I was quite amazed when I started using new iPad for the first time because the text was razor sharp, colors were quite rich and everything was perfectly detailed because of retina display. Second thing that really blowed me away was its blazing speed while playing games and doing multitasking ; thanks to A5X chip with quad-core processor.

The new iPad Vs iPad 2

In addition, iOS6 update which is coming this fall will bring features like Siri and Facetime calling over cellular network promising to enhance the overall experience. These two upcoming features will only be available for the new iPad and iPhone 4S users.

Another feature that you might not be aware of is the amazing dictation feature which helps you to convert your words into text. Simply, tap the microphone icon on the keyboard, say what you want to type and it does the typing for you. It was exciting to learn about this cool feature and it was a fun moment to see my new iPad converting my words into text.  Though, if you are an existing iPad2 user and looking to sell it to upgrade your tab to iPad3, I suggest you to wait and stick to iPad2, unless you are complete gadget freak.

Cons of New iPad

  • It is slightly heavier and thicker than iPad2.
  • Its reflective screen doesn’t work well in outdoors.
  • There is no Flash support in the web browser.
  • The iPad misses out the standard USB port like its predecessors. Same goes for its non replaceable battery and memory card slot.
  • There is no GPS receiver in the Wi-Fi version
  • Personally, one thing that bothered me much is that the ‘oh so cool’ tablet becomes uncomfortably hot at times.
  • If you are interested in basic iOS apps like weather, stocks, clock, calculator, voice memos then you might get bugged up not finding them on your new iPad.

Is it worth buying third generation iPad?

I won’t deny that the new iPad became irresistible to me because I was overtaken by the hype and after using it for sometime I have concluded that it definitely has met my expectations. No matter how strongly we talk about bad side of the coin, fact remains that it is loaded with impressive features. As of now, the biggest USP of the new iPad is its magnificent Retina display but the promising features like Siri and Facetime over cellular networks are sure to make you love the new iPad.

Worth buying third generation iPad

Why should you buy the new iPad?

From my personal experience I am writing down the reason why you should buy it or who should buy it.

  • If you are the one who is more cautious about image quality between standard-definition and high-definition images then you should go for the new iPad. This is one reason I bought this cool gadget.
  • It has one of the fast processor with quad-core graphics that will let you enjoy the thrill and excitement of different games.
  • If speed matters to you a lot then this new tablet from Apple is an ideal choice. The new iPad is 4G enabled device that will offer browsing at amazing speed. Go for the one which works on either AT&T’s 4G network or Verizon’s 4G network for fast connection anywhere.
  • It is good for those who love to keep their music and video data stored. Unlike iPad2 that has 16GB storage capacity, the new Apple iPad is available in 16GB, 32GB or 64GB capacity. However, I preferred 16GB for the reason that I don’t have too much of music and video data.

Why buy the new iPad

New iPad Price in India

The new Apple iPad was made available in India in the month of April. The pricing of different models in India are listed below.

Wi-Fi model Prices  in India

  • 16GB Wi-Fi model : Rs 30,500
  • 32GB Wi-Fi model : Rs 36,500
  • 64GB Wi-Fi model : Rs 42,500

Wi-Fi + 4G model Prices in India

  • 16GB Wi-Fi + 4G model : Rs 38,900
  • 32GB Wi-Fi + 4G model : Rs 44,900
  • 64GB Wi-Fi + 4G model : Rs 50,900

The launch of iPad3 in India effected the prices of iPad2 going down to Rs 24,500 for 16 GB Wi-Fi model. You can order it online from Croma store, Vijay Sales or official Apple store in India.

To sum up, I  being a gadget freak would any day suggest you to go for iPad 3 if you are planning to buy one. High-resolution Retina display, faster processor, significant visual improvement over iPad 2 were the compelling features that persuaded me to buy the new iPad.

Won’t say that its good in all perspective as some of you might find it expensive in comparison to iPad2 which is a strong low-cost choice. But trust me the money you spend on buying this new Apple tablet is genuinely worth it!

There are many free and paid Youtube video to MP3 Converter, which you can use to convert Youtube Videos into mp3. Personally, I use this feature at times when I want to download Youtube videos to be on my desktop or iPhone in audio format.

Most of these free Youtube video-audio converter site convert videos into mp3 in a while and you can also set the bitarte. Though, if video is in low quality, you might not get good quality converted video. So, I suggest you to convert only HD or HQ youtube videos into mp3.

In past, we have covered some tools (e.g Video2Mp3, ConvertMeMp3) which can help users convert different YouTube videos into Mp3 files. Many people including me prefer to download YouTube videos in Mp3 format so that they can be saved in portable mp3 players and occupy less space in your computer as well.

Today, we have gathered a list of few online tools (other than the ones mentioned above) which can help users convert YouTube videos into Mp3 and other files formats.

facetime1.png Facetime is one of the best free feature of iOS device. The best thing about Facetime free video calling service is, it’s available on all Apple devices. Be it, Mac, iPhone, iPad or any other iOS device with camera on it. First time user might get confused with how to use FaceTime, and in this guide I will exactly be talking about the same. This guide will answer all your queries regarding Facetime on iOS devices, right from activation to making calls.

Facetime is one of the most talked about features of iPhone 4. Yesterday, we posted some pictures from our first impressions of Facetime on iPhone 4 as Harsh and I tried a Facetime conversation. We were totally amazed by the quality of audio and video.

Facetime is also very intuitive and easy to use. In fact we are Facetime Ninjas now, in less than thirty minutes of video calling. Here’s how you can get started and most of other related queries answered.

How to Activate Facetime on your iPhone:

Though this guide is written for iPhone4, but if you are using any other version of iPhone/iPad, Facetime activation method remains the same.

Go to Settings > Phone > Facetime > On. The iPhone  will automatically send an SMS(international for non US users) and within 10 seconds your Facetime will be active.

facetime-iphone4-25.jpg Facetime activation

This only needs to be done once per sim card, and that too is automatic. No registration or user id required. Like Apple says, Facetime works out of the box.

Once the “Waiting for Activation” message goes away you are good to go. Please note that you will not be able to see the SMS sent for activation through your Messages app. If you have trouble activating Facetime, wait for our post which talks about activation issues for unofficial carriers.

iPod Touch users go to Settings > Facetime to confirm and verify your email address that will be used to receive calls. If unverified, follow instructions sent to email to get started.

Charges for using Fcaetime

No. We were not charged for our Facetime calls. It’s free for video calls between iPhone 4 and iPod touch devices. Both devices need to be connected to a wifi network with internet access(not necessarily same network).

How to start a Facetime video call

There has been a lot of doubt as to how the Facetime call is authenticated. Harsh and I tried the email address method yesterday but that failed and here’s why.
Facetime uses two ways to identify people – Phone number or email address. And the the type of device determines which one will be used.
facetime-iphone4-80.jpg
  • When calling an iPhone 4: Use the phone number of the person you are calling.
  • When calling an iPod touch (4th generation): Use the email address designated for FaceTime of the person you are calling.

Please note that you need iOS 4.1 to make calls or receive them from users on iPod Touch.

How to Make a Facetime Call

There are two ways of initiating a Facetime call. You could make a phone call just the way you normally do and then once you are there on the call click on Facetime. If your friend accepts the Facetime request call, voice call will end and you will no more be charged for voice.

facetime-iphone4-79.jpg
facetime-iphone4-83.jpg facetime-iphone4-86.jpg

Another way is directly making a Facetime call. Go to your contacts page and tap Facetime. Choose a method of identification(phone or email). Your friend will receive a notification if he’s on wifi. If he accepts you are good to go.

On iPod touch, there is an additional Facetime app. You can use it to call any of your contacts or through the contacts app like mentioned above.

Can I switch Cameras

facetime3.png

The Facetime call starts with your front camera. You can switch to the rear camera and back by clicking on the button in lower right corner.
facetime4.png

Some other features of Facetime you might want to know:

Muting Facetime

The Mute button will only prevent your audio from going through. Your video will still be visible to the other person.

Landscape Support

Just rotate the iPhone to switch to this mode.

Moving the preview window

The small window which shows your own Face can be moved around by dragging if it obstructs your view in the default position.

Do something else and get back to Facetime again?

If you need to check another app while you are on Facetime, no problem. Just hit home button and do your work. Your video will freeze on last frame and audio chat can still be continued. Once you click on the green bar similar to the one you get with voice calls, your video chat will be resumed.

Last Tip for Facetime Users:

You can also add Facetime to your Favorites list and start a Facetime call right from there. Facetime calls will also feature in your Recent Calls history.

Conclusion

So, that’s all we have gathered so far about Facetime. It’s been a great experience so far for us. Rumors are afloat that Facetime might soon come to iPads, Macs and Windows PCs too. We are really looking forward to that.

I hope this detailed Facetime usage guide will help you to start using this useful free service. In upcoming article, we will also be talking about iMessage, but for now why don’t you go ahead and try making a Facetime call to other iOS user in your contact list.

Gmail Data LossIf you use Google Apps for business, then Gmail may be an important part of your everyday activities. Your Gmail inbox can include communications from your coworkers, employees, superiors and even business associates from around the world. Gmail is convenient because you can access it from multiple locations and all your company’s employees can access email from the same interface, even if you use POP or IMAP to route messages from your company’s domain name to your Gmail account.

It’s a good idea to get to know the features and limitations of Gmail, especially if you use Google’s server space as your sole method to backup your emails. For instance, Gmail does allow you to restore Gmail emails that you have deleted that currently reside in your trash folder, which can help you to save effort and face if you accidentally delete messages, but sometimes data becomes permanently lost to you. Knowing what situations cause this can help you to prevent data- and message-loss that can have a high cost.

Prevent Gmail data loss by knowing it’s limitations and Features

30-Day Trash Limit

According to Google, messages can only remain in your trash box for up to 30 days after you have added them. Thus, if you think you may need to restore Gmail messages, you should keep the messages in your inbox rather than moving them to your trash folder.

Permanently Deleted Email

Once you click the button to permanently empty your trash folder, the data that was in it becomes lost forever. Google itself will not be able to retrieve this information for you. Take care not to accidentally click this button if there is any data that you might want to keep in your trash folder.

Archive, Don’t Delete

Prior to Gmail, users like yourself didn’t have many options besides simply saving emails that you might need sometime in the future or deleting them. However, Google has included the ability to archive messages and data with their mail service. This will remove messages from your inbox without placing them in your trash folder. Archiving messages is a great way to keep them but also keep them out of the way, if you’re not sure if you might need to use that data again. You can still search through the messages with Gmail’s search feature.

Remember to Back Up Your Data

A recent study on google apps data loss by Backupify evaluated the reasons why businesses lose data and found that 63% of occurrences are due to user error. While Gmail itself does make it easier to retrieve deleted messages than many services or programs, you might want to consider other alternatives. For example, one of the Google Apps for business users is a vault service that allows you to create a data backup from Google services like chat and mail to make it easier to organize and find data during times of litigation. Third-party programs like Backupify help you to back up one or more Gmail accounts and save that data to a separate, secure online archive. When the information is important, backing up is also important. Also read, Gmail apps FAQ’s

Bonus tip: Do enable Gmail 2 step authentication to ensure safety of your account. You can find details here.

Accidents do happen, even if you’re comfortable using Gmail. It’s good to be prepared for potential viruses, user errors, glitches or unauthorized access to your Gmail, all of which can result in permanent data loss. Being able to recover that information with a few clicks certainly brings peace of mind.

facetime data usage

So what did we find out?

Now that we have made FaceTime an integral part of how we communicate, we decided to find out how much data it is consuming. This is important for a lot of users who may not be on an unlimited data plan be it 3G or wi-fi. Keeping an eye on how much data Facetime is using, will make sure you never cross your data limit, and don’t get over billed for the usage.

For those living under a rock, here are some FaceTime related articles:

Facetime Data usage test:

Facetime is free, and works best when you are using high speed internet connection (Wi-fi, 3G, 4G).  We made a FaceTime call from our iPhone 4 (over 3G) to our new iPod Touch 4G which recently shipped. The results for the test call are as follows:

  • Call Duration: 10 minutes
  • Data Sent: 14.6 MB
  • Data Received: 15.1
  • Total Data (Sum of above) : 29.7 for ten minutes

We can conclude from the above that FaceTime is using approximately three megabytes per minute. So, an hour long conversation would involve around 180MB of data. A similar test conducted by 9to5Mac yielded the same results. Though, this result may vary depending upon which version of iOS device you are using.  So, when you are choosing a wi-fi plan at home go for unlimited connections to avoid huge data charges. Similarly, make sure you consider data charges on all the networks before you choose a 3G connection from the upcoming providers in India.

How to use Vine for Beginners

Vine iPhone app

Twitter is for sharing thoughts in 140 character limits. Normally, when Twitter users want to share videos through the platform they tweet a link to it. Their followers then click the link to be taken to another website to see the video. It’s up to them whether they come back to Twitter or not.

Then came Vine, the new IOS app everyone is buzzing about.

Twitter bought Vine in October 2012 and debuted it for free download in January 2013. The app allows users to capture and upload six second video loops to Twitter that followers can see in their stream without leaving the Twitter interface. Although Twitter says it’s developing the app for other platforms, Vine is currently only available for the iPhone and the iPod Touch. Originally, the app’s minimum age was 12 but due to the influx of adult themed videos, Twitter has raised it to 17 years old.

Benefits of Vine:

Vine iPhone appVine is good for Twitter for two reasons. The first is that it adds a richness to the platform that it lacked previously. Adding a new element to the content makes just makes the Twitter experience better overall.

The second reason is that it keeps more users on the platform instead of sending them out to third party websites to watch these videos. The more it keeps those users within the platform, the higher its traffic and usage stats. Those numbers affect advertising prices among other things.

There are benefits for users, too. In terms of sharing, individuals and brands have gotten used to using post updates and images to reach their audiences. Video is an option but most of the time it’s an involved process to create the longer videos you see on Youtube and other video sites. Vine is a quick and easy way to connect with others through moving images. It also is the most hassle free way to upload video to Twitter at the moment.

Getting Started with Vine

Using Vine is a lot like using Instagram, but there are still a few things you need to know about the services. Here are some facts to keep in mind:

Expect simplicity. Vine is super simple. Just hold the create button to make a video and let go when you’re done. There are some users who will be disappointed by the lack of advanced features of the app. But the fact that you don’t have to be a genius to use it well is part of the design.

It’s all about keeping it short. Long videos aren’t for Vine. Like Twitter, Vine is about an abbreviation of an experience. You may think six seconds is too short to make an impression but it’s not. It just means you have to get to the point right away.

It’s not just about the video. After you’ve created a video, that’s not the end. You also can add captions with hashtags and location information.  This gives your followers some sort of context to your creations. It’s also important to making your Vine videos searchable through the app, Twitter, and other platforms.

It’s not just about Twitter. Vine is a separate app and platform from Twitter. You don’t have to be on Twitter to use Vine. You create a separate profile and have a separate follower count on Vine. And while you can share your Vine videos to your Twitter account, you can also share it to Facebook. Other sharing options may be added in the future.

Don’t forget to explore. Vine is to Twitter what Instagram is to Facebook. It’s connected but separate. And just as you can use Instagram to search the app to find new and interesting content, Vine’s explore option allows you find interesting videos through hashtags and keywords.

Go ahead and try Vine, and let me know if you still have any questions. You can also subscribe to our Email newsletter for more updates.

When we talk about jailbreaking your iOS devices, it doesn’t restrict us to installing Jailbroken applications but it also allows you to install useful paid or free Cydia tweaks. For example Internet tethering is not available on iPad, but with one paid cydia app call My Wii 4.0, we can share internet from iPad.

Similarly there are numerous Cydia apps which adds tons of functionalities and tweaks into your iOS device (iPhone, iPad, iPod touch) and enhances it’s feature. If you liked any of the paid cydia tweaks, you need to buy it. You can read our guide on How to buy apps from Cydia store

Here is a very useful and well taken video showing top 30 Cydia tweaks which you can consider installing on your iOS device. This video is show on iPad and along with the name of Cydia app and it’s usage to better understanding of that particular cydia tweak.

Some of the apps which I have installed on my iPad or iPhone from the list are:

  • Inifineboard
  • Inifnidock
  • SBSettings
  • Cydelete
  • Winterboard
  • Pull to refresh Safari and many more

Here are few more Cydia tweaks January 2013 edition:

Though I would never suggest you to install all the 30 Cydia tweaks but instead install only the one which you use.  Install one cydia tweak at a time and check if it’s working normally or not. In case if it’s not working, you can refer to my earlier post on How to uninstall Installld Cydia apps.

Do let us know which are your favorite Cydia apps from the above list of Cydia tweaks?
