5 Things We Are Expecting in the iPad 2

We were all pretty amazed by the amazing refinements made on the Macbook Air that Apple recently released. Now it’s the iPad’s turn to be updated. While the iPad did make record sales a lot of people were refraining from purchasing one until Apple released the second generation iPads with the camera being the most sought after addition to the iPad line. Hit the break to find out what else we are expecting in the iPad 2.

The next generation of the iPad will most likely hit the shelves in first quarter of 2011 depending on how fast the component manufacturers finish their tasks. We have all been impressed by the new features introduced by Apple in the latest iPhone 4 and Macbook Air so there’s no doubt that a lot of the lessons Apple’s engineers learnt there will be cropping up in the next generation of iPads.

Apple has almost always been ahead of all other manufacturers which give its products a good edge in the market. Here are the features which we should be seeing in iPad 2:

Cameras and FaceTime

The iPhone 4 did FaceTime. The iPod Touch 4G did FaceTime. Even the Mac does FaceTime now. So, there’s obviously no chance that iPad 2 will be left out of the party. Rumor’s suggest that component manufacturers (read: OmniVision) are making two cameras for the upcoming iPad. Just like the iPhone 4, iPad 2 should feature a front VGA camera for FaceTime video calling as well as a rear 5 Megapixel camera.

The rear camera is not as sought after as the front camera. Not many of us would be holding an 9.7 inch tablet up in our hands shooting megapixel photos. However, the front camera on iPad will further expand the FaceTime community which is Apple’s no-fuss video chat solution for the masses as opposed to Skype and other existing solutions.

Better Screen & Retina Display

Apple has been paying a lot of attention to visual perfection on its screens. The new Macbook Air’s screen has as many pixels as the 15 inch Macbook Pro. The iPhone 4 and iPod Touch 4G already have the fascinating Retina Display. Trust me, it really is fascinating. You have to see it to believe it. So, in all likelihood iPad 2 will have the Retina Display though that is an expensive deal. Hopefully, Apple will find a way to cut down on the costs there.

Increased Storage Memory

Almost all of us see big numbers when it comes to the size of our iTunes databases. With the introduction of Retina Display watching videos is even better. Also now that VLC media player is introduced for iPhone and iPad we can directly transfer most of our movies in no time. With all this coming, a boost in storage capacity is a must. Presently, the iPad has a maximum storage capacity of 64GB and its very likely we’ll see that going up to 128 next year.

Increased Ram & Faster Processor

apple-a4-processor.png Some people have suggested that the A4 processor might be bumped up to 1.5Ghz. While I can’t bet on that I am very sure that the RAM will be increased from 256 to 512 MB just like the iPhone 4. This will again give Apple great edge over other devices in the market.

Design Update

If Apple’s recently filed patent for nitride coatings for stainless steel make it in time, we might see no more aluminum back. Hopefully, the new design will bring lighter models and enhanced battery capacity just like the Macbook Airs.

Other Rumors

We have also heard some rumors about the introduction of a smaller 7 inch sibling to the existing 9.7 inch model. Another set of rumors suggest that the iPad will have a mini USB port and an extra dock to enable docking in both Portrait and Landscape Mode. While Apple adding any USB ports is highly unlikely now, the addition of extra dock can be expected as it does become a nuisance with current generation iPad during docking.

Tell us what is it that you have been looking forward to in the next generation of iPads.

    please, mr jobs,
give us a device that’s not working only one way and only with itunes or iphoto on a mac.

e.g. i need to get my pictures off this thing when travelling or when showing them to my client (no, there would be no wifi transfer because pictures are really big, see?), so set it free from big brother mac, didn’t you tell us that this would be the next generation of home computers?

I have yet to purchase an iPad and decided to wait to see what updates Apple would make when they updated it. One thing I expect and has also been rumored is the ability to add your own carrier as your wireless provider for the tablet.

they already work with different carriers. i can confirm that current generation iPad word in India with BSNL 3G sim.
