We know Apple is working on this, but so far we have always desired that the iPhone notifications be improved. Mobile Notifier is a Cydia app from Peter Hajas and Kyle Adams is one of the best attempts at this it seems. It allows unobstrusive alerts. Requires a jailbroken iPhone to install.
